I've been playing the game a lot over the last few days and I've been trying out my own version of the Merseyside area that I made on the editor.

Now I was having problems with the number of people wanting to get from the outer Wirral Suburbs and towns over the Mersey into Liverpool since I have five suburban lines all joining the Underground system and heading in a loop via the underground stations.

So to carry more passengers and keep my stations from getting too full I was running services with 6 trains per suburban line now that worked well for a while but now I have a pretty big log jam of trains either stuck in stations and can't move or others stuck in tunnels and unable to reach the platforms since they are already being used by a train.

So the end result is my surface line suburban lines are not being served since the trains are all stuck in the tunnel on the loop and can't get out again so the only way people can cross the river is either by taking a bus since I'm running frequent cross river services through the road tunnel or catch a local or shuttle bus to one of the ferry terminals and take the boat across before catching a local bus to complete their journey.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has been stuck with their metro trains being jammed in the tunnel at some point.

Running the 6 trains per line was the only way I could think of to keep the service going without getting complaints or having people waiting too long.

I hope I can figure this out. Maybe I need to have fewer trains on the system or build another line to cope with the growing numbers or something.

I was just curious what you thought on this as I didn't know if anyone else has problems with jammed metro trains lining up in the tunnel?

Thanks for reading this guys.

Screenshots will be very helpful. But from what I understood you just have too much trains on one line. You need more stations and more lines. But don't create two parallel line, they will not work good together. Try creating two lines going from the suburbs to different locations in the main city.

If you have a very high density line like that do as the poster above me suggested; turn the line into two which go to different areas. Simply putting more trains on a line is only effective up until a certain point. Eventually, having more trains would hinder your service, as trains queue up to use platform space.

You mentioned that your metro line is in a loop shape. So here is a work-around idea:

Assuming your station layout looks like this

..........A..........
......../....\........
....../.......\.......
.....B.........E.....
.....\........./......
......C____D.......

Try creating different lines:
Line 1: from A to B
Line 2: from B to C
Line 3: from C to D
Line 4: from D to E and
Line 5: from E to A

Just an idea.

Good luck

I'm going to assume that you are like me when it comes to metros.

I enjoy having a central loop in which branches (separate lines) sprout out. the loop can become quite crowded and contested as more metros are needed to keep up decently with the flow of commuters.

If this is true, I suggest not having each line go around the loop, but to have one or possibly two lines specifically to go around the loop exclusively to transfer citizens from one line to another. If there is only one loop line, have it along the inner belt of the loop so that it is not as affected by the branch line trains when they commute in and out of this central region.

After using this concept, I found that I was able to more efficiently transport and transfer my passengers from one line to another. Since commuters were not continuity transferring trains while in the loop, trains were not loading and unloading for unnecessary reasons. To conclude, I find this the best solution for if you are configuring your transit system around a central loop.

I have a loop and have one line running clockwise and the other line running counterclockwise. That way there's always a shorter way to go than if I had one. All the stations are within a block of a bus or tram (or both) stop. It works very well for me.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and your replies are very useful so I can try and figure out what's been going on with the trains getting stuck. Oddly after I posted and I put the game on my trains seemed to get going after I suspended one of the suburban lines so it's trains were removed from the tunnel so I was able to clear the queue of waiting trains but I actually counted them and at one point I had two trains one after the other going onto the same branch line so that didn't help with the long queue to have two trains that were actually on the same branch line service.

I'm changing a few thing around the in the editor but when I start the metro again I'm thinking of having two lines going anti clockwise like the Chester and Ellesmere Port trains going in one direction on the loop and the New Brighton and West Kirby lines going the other way so that both platforms at each station get used and that might help spread the flow of commuters since they won't all have to crowd onto the same platform since they could use the other stations on the loop.

The commuters would be able to get to a station easily enough since I always try and plan a good bus network in the centre of my CIM version of Liverpool.

Thanks again for all your help and I'm going to make sure I read this thread again when I start to sort out metro again after finishing things off with the editor.

I would have done screen shits but I don't know how to do them yet I know other people here have done then but I'm not sure how to do that yet?

Although you had already solve your problem, I still wants to share my method of running multiple metro lines.
If you want five suburb line to use one station, make sure that the timing is correct. For example, train of line one leaves the station and train of line two goes into the station few seconds later. Also, use same type of metro train to avoid slower type train stucking other faster metro train. Timing is the key for having multiple lines.

Once the metro breaksdown the others will create a line behind it tho. So it is not necessarily controlable I think.

It's hard to make this work. One train breaks down, or a train takes a little longer to load all passengers (If the train waits for that one last pensioner) and all your timing is lost.

I'm trying a new way of running the metro system I have two mainline services running round the loop and back out onto the mainline suburban lines so on my system the Chester and New Brighton Metro Trains do the full loop but the Ellesmere Port, West Kirby and Neston lines operate as branch line shuttle trains and connect with the other services at interchange stations.

So far CIM Pensioners tend to just slow my bus services down as I had one getting on a double Decker with a Zimmer frame so it was have been an easy access bus. The other weird thing about pensioners is they will take to wondering around your tram lines or at least they did on mine last night.
