This is different from any other AI topic which is why I started a new one for it. Basically if you are at peace with an AI and both of you are at war with a common enemy, you aren't allowed to help them defend their cities. I had one weak AI that was basically a buffer between me and a much stronger AI on the other side, we were at peace and his last city was besieged by a very large army. I sent in a buffed up bearman and started wrecking enemy units near his city to help them out (and because I didn't want that army on my cities), logic tells me this would make the AI grateful (that's how it works in other games), after a couple dozen turns of helping this AI, it spontaneously declares war on me. This has never happened before, I didn't even think it was possible, no message, no demand, just war out of nowhere. So I checked the diplomacy panel... -389 for trespassing. So while I'm saving his last city from certain doom, he's getting pissed at me so much for trespassing that even though he has no army left at all he declares war on me. This really shouldn't happen, there should be significant diplomatic boosts for killing an enemy unit near another AI's city, and a much lower cap for trespassing of like -20 or -15.

If you're allied, there is no trespassing penalty. If you're just at peace with them, they still get mad at you for stomping around in their territory. The enemy of your enemy still doesn't want you hanging out on his lawn.

Like Pax said, for all the AI 'knew' you were just there to take the capital for yourself.

I usually make a non-aggression pact on first encountering another warlock, as long as they don't expect too much for it. Then I go running around their territory for a bit and soon enough the pact is broken. :p

That's my point. The AI has no awareness of "help" like you might find in other 4x games (IE Civ5). I'm not saying they shouldn't get mad at trespassing when only at "peace," that's fine (though like I said there should be a cap, war is only -100, why can simple trespassing accumulate to many times that?). If I kill an enemy unit in their territory though I should get like a +5 relation boost.

I think the trespassing penalty is per unit, per turn. If you have an army in his territory, he'll get seriously pissed at you and declare war over it. If you want to help them out in their territory, get an alliance. That's what that option's for.

That's still not the point. I specifically said "peace" in my first post. I didn't want to become friends with this AI, one just assumes that they wouldn't go into a massive rage because your units are next to their city for a few turns killing the enemies attacking said city. Regardless of that fact it's still obviously unintended that the single highest negative relation modifier possible in the game is trespassing.

It's also really hard to get into a lasting alliance with an AI that doesn't like or fear you, and it nice to have ways to boost their relations, like for example helping them defend their cities. :p

Actually, I would assume that moving your army into their borders without permission to do so constitutes a declaration of war automatically. I think it's weird that they even gave you a couple of turns before making it official.

They get pretty pissed if you catch their units in AoE spells, too.
