Which do you use and why?

Did you fully customize? If so how did you go about it?

I feel like the game's telling me very little of what's going on in the world using default settings (without the log).

Depends. Am I catholic? Everything related to the Curia is on and pause.

Am I Ming? Then the notices about the HRE get turned off.

The best way I've found is upon starting a new game, turn EVERYTHING on and then when messages get annoying, turn them off.
I learned that "your navy is under attack!" and "your army is under attack!" are very useful in Ironman.

General rule, better by far to start with too many POPUP & PAUSES than to miss golden opportunities. After all you can easily tone down/turn off superfluous alerts by clicking the bottom right box within a popup. It really is a matter of personal gameplay/taste.

I also feel I want to know more of what's going on around me, for information & also immersion, & so I fully customise. Its a pain but you only need to do it once, then tweak in-game to your taste as you go.

Concentrate on setting any additional popups, & consider carefully those that you will likely want to deal with immediately (Popup & Pause), from those that will simply inform & influence any future strategy (Popup). The latter can usually wait until the next natural pause in gameplay for your consideration.

IMO Message Icons & the Log are almost useless at anything but slowest game speeds. But if you do want to actively use them, then remember to regularly review & update your "Interesting" Nations, & use the corresponding filter to avoid an information overload.

I wish there were settings for 20/30/10/X% attrition on your ships. I hate when I lose 99% of my fleet in one province out.

Also the message settings if you turn it on autopause don't work in multiplayer which is really annoying. Even if they don't pause they should still POP UP WHY THE HELL DOESNT IT DO THAT WTF

Things like fleet and army under attack I put on autopause. Also if your army moves into another province the army under attack doesnt pop up which again is really dumb, if I send my army to move somewhere and they accidentally walk into a stack in the mountains I want to know goddamnit

I wish there were more messages:

1. War tax has expired

Mmmhhh...

I did shun to set everything to max, since it seemed tedious (both to get there and to tone it back down while playing).
Especially because I seem to remember (maybe this is only true for CKII I might be wrong here) patches resetting my message settings.

I really wish message settings were a per-game setting, saved in the Save File. And then messagetypes_custom.txt were just defaults for new games. Changing settings from the Main Menu would change the defaults; changing it in the game itself would change just for that specific game.

I currently work around this by making multiple copies of messagetypes_custom.txt and putting the appropriate on in place before a game. But that's not exactly ideal.

This comes up a lot for me when I'm testing mechanics. There I often want every message off, nearly the opposite of my normal play settings where I have lots of extra popups turned on.
