I hadn't had troops stationed in a province my colonial nation's rebels attacked, I wouldn't have gotten any alert they were in any trouble until the rebels started enforcing their demands and provinces I won for them in an earlier war started to defect.
Messages regarding your subject nations should have it's own category in message settings you can get an alert when they get into trouble and you might want to step in.
