any time I get frustrated with this game, it generally comes back to these two elements of the game.

1) mercs ..... infinite manpower cheatz, enough said. ruins attrition warfare, dumbs down combat and the game in general into ducats. they also get military bonuses from national ideas and military idea sets which makes a whole lot of sense. nothing like Ottoman or Ming merc spam, where their manpower is 0 at war's start but 500k+ casualties later and their army size hasn't changed. I love how mercs are entirely reliable and that they also fight for a noble cause and don't mind dying in droves. there's also that ant nest factor where 1 regiment gets into the middle of your country, captures a single province, and that captured province proceeds to vomit out a ton more mercs who proceed to carpet siege.

2) zone of control.....I like forts, I'm probably one of the few who builds them, but they make warfare flat out ugly with all the bizarre paths one can and can't take. even if it's not technically bugged anymore, it's too wonky with the rules. I realize the last time they tried to rework this, it didn't pan out so well, but are they taking another crack at it anytime soon?

On the second point, I actually had a fascinating interaction with zone of control recently where one fort literally pinned down one of my armies in the middle of Lithuania. Couldn't move anywhere, not even to the fort itself. Get some really strange things going on, and I kinda wish they had just moved to the no nonsense version of ZoC they had tested before. It was extremely strict, but it was clear at least.
