I don't really see the problem with this from a historical perspective, it's not like Venice, Genoa or the Hansa remained powerful entities all throughout the game's era anyway (in fact, they all completely succumbed). It's a fair change in the direction of realism and historical accuracy, which should take precedence in cases like this. While some may argue that EU4 isn't a history simulator, it is one way more than it's a senseless blobbing simulator.

Venice experienced multiple resurgences and only fell in the last few years of the game while Genoa dominated Europe through banking at its height. Merchant Republics becoming Empires or majors due to a player aware of what not to do is not unrealistic.

So they put out an expansion that supposedly focuses on the merchant republics, and added in a mechanic that forces you out of merchant republic after the early game? Why would they do that?
For the same reason that they released two expansions focusing on the New World, and then killed the New World almost entirely.

You don't get any points for a historical outcome if you arrive at it by a massively ahistorical method. Imagine an American Civil War game where the Confederacy only loses because the Union sends agents to instigate slave revolts.

Venice really suffered because, in EU4 terms, Portugal picked up some protectorates and redirected trade towards the Sevilla node rather than Venice. Their inability to both expand and remain a republic had nothing to do with it.

If you wish to blob as a merchant republic, open Steam\steamapps\common\europa universalis iv\common

Open defines.lua with a text editor like Notepad++

Locate the line

MERCHANT_REPUBLIC_SIZE_LIMIT = 20,

And change 20 to 30, or 50 or 9999, whatever your heart desires.

This change would not leave you eligible for Ironman though.
Didn't you say that Merchant Republics would be allowed to change to other government types? I can't find it at patch note.

I like how achievement for Ragusa basically makes you have to blob since you need to guarantee the Ottomans, and at same time stay the merchant republic. Great achievement.

Max number of provinces = 15 + diplo tech level.

Might want to raise the numbers and put them at solid intervals instead.

It does seem like it would make more sense to tie Merchant Republic size to the new state system, rather then a strict province limit. That way you could have a small national core and still have extensive trade company holdings.

This seems like a great way to have a MR that's actually good at, you know, trading. Give them 1/3 the number of states (maybe). And I would suggest giving them a larger discount on development costs to make playing "tall" easier.

Are Merchant Republics that much better than regular republics that they need to be constrained?


Maybe there should be a decision for Merchant Republics that grow above a specified size to reform into a regular republic.

Why.

Paradox does a good job of adding features but then forgets to make them all work cohesively. I hope Paradox fixes that issue before the game becomes too bloated.

Poor @grommile will have a heart attack.
I've never found playing Venice an appealing prospect in the first place. (And the time I played the Hansa would have been approximately the same amount of fun as any other kind of republic.)
