"Supposed to be tall" is your opinion. Spain and England were good at trading, and they blobbed like all hell.

It's almost as if those countries were not in fact merchant republics!

Republics cannot have royal marriages and therefore cannot have PUs and cannot become emperor.
Therefore monarchies and not MRs were always considered the "strongest" government type.
And now Paradox nerfs merchant republics with no need for it, i dont get it.

It does seem like it would make more sense to tie Merchant Republic size to the new state system, rather then a strict province limit. That way you could have a small national core and still have extensive trade company holdings.

If you wish to blob as a merchant republic, open Steam\steamapps\common\europa universalis iv\common

Open defines.lua with a text editor like Notepad++

Locate the line

MERCHANT_REPUBLIC_SIZE_LIMIT = 20,

And change 20 to 30, or 50 or 9999, whatever your heart desires.

This change would not leave you eligible for Ironman though.
...Which makes it completely useless for a lot of people

Merchant republic even start with only 2 diplomats....every game i start I miss the 3 diplomats from other goverment forms.
The third diplomat is for being a Kingdom. venice and Novogrod get 3 diplomats as they have Kingdom-rank. Genoa, Lubeck and Ragusa start as Duchies.

I still don't get why you chose the way of pain (penalty), rather than the way of fun (reward). Or at least combine the two. An OPM MR with extra +1 RT could be quite an interesting thing to play.

Genoa is event worse then before. Now it get corruption because it start with low religious unity. Anyone play the new feature in intern before releasing it? Really guys...

Maybe trade republic should have least state instead of hard 20 provinces.

IMO, it would make a lot of sense to not count trade company provinces towards the province limit. Forming trade companies seems very much in character for a merchant republic, and should not be discouraged.
I do not think that a merchant republic with 20 home provinces, 4-5 OPM trade league members, and unlimited potential for colonial expansion through colonial nations, trade companies and protectorates would be unplayable in multiplayer or unfun in singeplayer.

Vassals do not help with moving trade forward. Venice starts with 9 provinces, so you essentially have 11 spare provinces to forge a trading empire.

Seems a bit weird. For the longest time posters had to fight against the historically inaccurate notion that Steppe Hordes needed to "Reform or die". Now Paradox has willingly transferred the "Reform or die" rhetoric to an instance where it actually makes sense from a historical perspective.

I'm not going to criticize Paradox for it, just a bit perplexed.

If it wasn't for the chance to wage wars to flip everyone around me to glorious Protestant and take their money I would've fallen asleep probably.

"Supposed to be tall" is your opinion. Spain and England were good at trading, and they blobbed like all hell.
