I heard you can automatically switch from merchant republic to administrative republic by destroying your CoT as i.e. the hansa. Does it still work? I tried once and destroyed my CoT but nothing happened next month.

It's not something that automatically happens at the beginning of the following month, it's an event with a fairly short mean_time_to_happen, so it will usually happen within a month or so.

And you must have zero CoTs. You can't just have destroyed the one in Lubeck, and be comfortable ensconced in Venice, for example. Well, you could take Venice, later, but for the event to fire, you can't have a CoT, anywhere.

In 5.2 time to switch was lengthened considerably. It took my venice 2y to switch.

Tip: Pile up gold, before switch, cause trade is probably huge portion of your income, lossing witch can expose you in case of war.

Or you can just research Government technology and switch manually further down the road, that also works. Though I'd suggest keeping the Merchant Republic, at least if you have a couple of rich CoTs. 'Cause if you don't keep everyone in your Trade League they'll break apart you CoT and soon you'll have three of them in Central Germany alone...

I cannot fathom why you would want to change away from such a brilliant and economically powerful government type.

But yes, the event does work with a MTTH of 1 month, a bit longer in 5.2 beta.

Ye I know it can be great :) But in this Hansa game I am just after the Krantor Crane decision, I dont want any scattered cots and enclaves in Europe. Playing on hard and I want to keep clean borders. Before I have 100 colonies or vassals I will earn more on free trade, It's easy to go back to merchant republic from admin republic later. I also want the statute of monopolies decision. I feel I need to control large parts of the world and cots before I will get more income from mercantilism than free trade. So my plan is to go mercantilism when I have enough colonies and vassals, I cant bother about reputations as I am brute forcing Germany with missions in the start.

Because of self restraint rules? :p

Or aversion to micromanagement, as TL require it a bit for every non vassal member.

Yes that is one reason but mostly because you need to control so much of the world before mercantilism becomes more lucrative than free trade. So i see going mercantilism after like 200 years an option.

Heresy!!!

Play Hansa. DoW Liguria on day ONE. Annex it as soon as horde eat away oversee possessions. DoW Venezia after that. Annex it. Dow Burgundy (exco would be immensely useful here). Grab Andtwerpen.

Now as you control CoTs in whole europe but iberia/france/novogrode, add whole middle europe to your TL.

Laugh with your best "Evil" laugh at any so called "free" trader. :p

Could be done by 1450.

Spain require huge piles of Big/Light ships, so wait for liguria and venezia to core :D :D :D and rotfl-stomp on petty pocket fleets of spaniards. ;) Take andaluzia.

Novogorod should be annexed and new CoT created on the coast, old one destroyed.

France first should be reduced to 3PM (Bill of Rights is very good here!), and then annexed while CoT moved to the shore.

Just keep sizable Influence sphere consisting of OPM's and you will be able to add EVERYBODY to your TL.

Then create Germany, than create HRE, than PU colonizers, than go for WC. All done with Mercantilism.

Yep, PU colonizers while still being a merchant republic.

Ok. Got a bit carried :p On the other hand with HRE formed you can switch to other forms of government ;) But keep mercantilism.
W
Others can help themselfs with Alexandria CoT, and sound/bosphor tolls. And with early QFTNW, and pillaging CoTs of non-europeans.
