One of the things this game is sorely lacking is trade style gameplay in the Indian ocean. Paradox says they didn't add any merchant republics because there were no republics in india at the time. They're not wrong but it was still a massive trade hub.

So my suggestion is to create feudal esque merchant counties to play for all non catholic trade republics. There merchant lords would give you all the same tradepost gameplay but there would only be one patrician family and no elections. To compensate for all the money generation and the little inner republic conflict levies should be severely cut for these types of rulers which in turn will force them to rely a lot more on mercenaries.
