I started a game a while ago and quickly found out that 1 infamity = 2% less merchant chance and possibly also compete chance. After that I amde sure never to have to much.

Now it's 1457. I got 3,5 infamy, but it doesn't give me a reduced chance of 7% but 17,8% or more than 5 % pr infamity point. Moreover, the 15% penalty I'm supposed to get for takeing over an uncored CoT(the Zapotecs) does NOT show up. The popup says 17,8% chance for infamity and I think over 5% pr point is to harsh and I KNOW it was 2% pr infamy earlier in this exact game.

Anyone know what is up with that? I play unmodded 5.1 version.

Edit: Found a save game from early in the war where I had control over 3 provinces, where of one was the CoT. I tried proposing peace takeing these 3 provinces and my BB jumped from 0 to 2,4 and compete chance was down 19,5%, but no 15% for the CoT. Realoded and took the two provinces, but not the CoT got 1,6BB and -3,2 compete chance. Then I tried to take ONLY the CoT. Now it shows correct with -1,6% for my 0.8BB and -15% for an uncored CoT. So the game is apparently not broken on that aspect.

But why does I get a huge malus when I take the CoT together with other provinces? and it's displayed as infamy malus and not uncored CoT malus? And 17,8- 7 for BB is not 15 either. I really dont understand this.

I also tried deleting the CoT(just for testing purposes), and by the end of the month my compete chance for BB was down to normal.

We also get reduced compete chance for total merchants placed overall.

The -15% non core CoT chance is still there maybe it doesent show up before the month is changed.

I know of the reduced chance for placed merchant and I also know about the -15% penalty for uncored provinces. What I tried to explain is that the -15% penalty for my uncored CoT is not showing, and in all those test I waited for the end of the month. I get a huge infamy malus, but no malus for the uncored CoT. Atm, my BB is down to 1,2 and the competechance/merchant chance is down to just to around 10%. I had planned to take over more provinces as soon as the truce runs out, but thought I would wait until the BB was totally gone and see if it would clear the BB malus too, cause something is obviously wrong. (My BB burns sucks, only 0,6 pr month, and the over 40 year old hair has it even worse with 4 stars in diplomacy).

What CoT are you looking at? You don't get the non-core CoT penalty in CoTs that you own (or the infamy penalty either I believe).
Also, are you in a trade league? Maybe you are actually seeing the league leader's modifiers.

It was the Lûbeck one and I don't own that. Tough a few years later I took some more provinces and now my 3,5 BB reflects properly as 7% merchant chance as it should AND all of the sudden I got the 15% for non cored CoT too??

I'm not really sure what happened, but now it works properly.

And why should I choose another country than Norway? Up until now I've been mainly been playing easy countries like France, Castille and Portugal and now I wanted more of a challange, and decided that challange was Norway :)

When I first started playing in EU2 I picked Norway as my first game, Norway is a really, really bad choise for your very first game, and I crashed and burned badly. Now that I have spend several years honing my skills(and loong periosds of absent too tough), I decided it was time to try again and see what I could now. And while it is still slow and will continue to be slow for another 30-40years it will gradually improve. In 2,5 years I can move my NF and hopefully speed of 5 conversions, and build up some more buildings without going throguh all my magistrates, 5 montsh later I reach naval tech 9 and is only 1 tech away from getting 10, when I can build lightships to improve my tarrifs. A few years after naval 9(and probably before naval 10) I will get a 3 more cores in Sweden improving my census taxes. Then there is only about 20 years until I get my first 5 cores in America, at wich point I will realise Sweden as my vassal and gift them the provinces surrounding my capital and move it to America, where I will get core on 4-6 more provicnes every 5-6 years or so. Until that time come I will build up my american provinces as best I can.

Only thing is that I'm a bit unusure of is that when I get colonial range(with my first cores), is if I should go for the carribien island first or connect my provinces in ithe Cherokee area to my provinces in the Maya/Zapotec areas first. I got 26 years of playing time to figure that out first tough.

You didn't answer about the league though. If you're in a trade league you normally use the league leader's compete modifiers (although there are some things that can change that and infamy is one of them).
