Yeah, mercenary leaders are auto-assigned. Just dismiss them, let their numbers replenish and then re-hire them at full strength.

so long their leaders have died.
That's a... really long time. While you cannot change mercenary leaders, if you add even 1 of your own troops to their flank, THEN you can assign leaders.

I would keep them if you can afford them and are making use of their troops. You don't really need their leaders for the troops to be effective, you can/should mix their troops with yours so that the flanks and center are lead by your generals. So yes you should keep them if you can afford to do so.

Also question to thread
I am now a Celtic Pagan Ruler and I have now lost access to any sort of mercenary. Is this a bug or is this because mercenaries are religion based?
