So I'm playing in Iron Man mode as the Byzantines going for the Mend the Schism achievement. I captured every holding necessary, including Rome. My problem though is that after I captured Rome I went into the intrigue screen to see how much more piety I needed to get it. To my surprise though, the event was gone. It was there before the war, and then when I finished the war it was gone. I tried reloading the game and that didn't work. The only thing that I can think might cause an issue is the Pope is a heretic, however he was a heretic before the war and the event was still possible.

Does the Pope have to be Catholic after I take Rome for me to be able to mend the schism? Or is this just a glitch?

That’s a bug a religious head title can’t be held by someone not of that religion

The ones that allow secular rulers can. One of my relatives managed to inherit the Shia caliphate several generations ago and we're reformed Germanics.

I'm really curious how the pope managed to become a Cathar though. Maybe that secret cult hit the jackpot or something.

Maybe assassinate that pope and see if the option is available with a non-heretical one?

Well it appears that I don't have the ability to read. I double checked and I guess Catholicism became a heresy during the war and Cathar became the dominant religion. The Pope still is Catholic, but the religion symbol is red and so I assumed he was Cathar. Guess that answers my question!

And isn't it just my luck to finally take Rome at the moment I can no longer get the achievement... oh well.

Ouch man. Might give it a bit though. Once it becomes a heresy it starts getting generated randomly as one. If the Cathar MA is low as well it will probably flip back and forth between them.

Just a fun update:
After about 80 years, two successions, Catholicism switching between heresy twice, and a bit of luck, I finally mended the great schism! And almost all of Europe is controlled by Muslims and Pagans so... at least I did it lol

Time to flip to Catholic, I suppose.

Flip to Catholic, defend the faith so it becomes the orthodoxy again. Then flip to Orthodox, mend the Schism and make Catholicism a heresy again. That'll confuse the hell out of historians in the future.
