I bought a retail key. So did many others. No refunds once redeemed.

Ironically bought a retail key to save a miniscule amount because I didn't think I would be refunding.

Anyway it doesn't really matter. Hopefully something can be worked out for people in my position. If not too bad.

This community is super helpful about this tho. Especially those who are not effected at all! Such technical insights, such kind heartedness, such comradery and such productive use of ones time! Amaze.

So you decided to buy a key from a grey market seller as you did not want to pay the full price for the game, and did not check you met the requirements before doing so.

Why would we be helpful when there is nothing to help?

Since having two binaries for the same game on the same platform is not a good idea (e.g. Trouble with Steam, complicates error-finding by wierd interactions with hardware), you need a solution which doesn't produce two binaries.
Can you explain in more detail what kind of trouble and interactions you mean? Because Vic3 already has two binaries: the launcher and the game itself. As the launcher starts the actual game binary, it seems there's little reason why it couldn't simply choose to start another AVXless one if needed.

Not that I think supporting AVXless CPUs is a good investment, but I've done some hobbyist programming myself when I was younger so you piqued my interest :D

there's no reason why it is a bad idea. a second binary, with a selection popup when you hit play, is perfectly doable and fine.

his points as to why it would be bad are incorrect.

Edit - since someone has already disagreed, a recent example would be carrier command 2, which started life with 2 exe's. one normal, one for VR. Admittedly they merged them later into one, but the fact is having 2 is not an issue with steam, more of an internal headache as they now have 2 they need to deal with, update, debug, etc.

This was my assumption as well. Well before I read the support article I hoped avx was simply a unpassed check but that was clearly not the case and I assumed your solution was the hotfix support were telling people about.

Also the minimum requirements are telling; I guess someone knew this would be a problem and probably didn't wanna go there lol. Understandable. Sucks for me tho.

Interesting. Now the question is what exactly they use AVX for. If it truly is interconnected with the entire game 2 binaries are essentially a no go. But if it's just for the simulation of the economy (which would make sense, this is the most demanding part of the game) perhaps it wouldn't be so difficult to maintain 2 binaries? They could fix bugs and add flavour without touching the economy simulation mechanics.

There is a pinned list of resellers Paradox approves of in the paradox general forums. Just because it is a reseller does not make it gray market. That said, not checking that you meet the minimum requirements before buying the game is rather silly.

They didn't use AVX, and I never claimed they did. the reason for the second exe is entirely irrelevant, only that they did, and the reasons given before for it being a bad idea where not valid.

Maybe so, but i'd be willing to bet i'd be vindicated on this one.

Tell me, when do you think the first use of AVX was? You don't know? Well me neither, but I'll give you a very early one.

Grid 2, released in 2013, had a second exe included, that enabled some extra graphics features that required AVX. Back then, doing pixel shading ordering without AVX would destroy performance. So they offered an exe that would allow it for those who had this relatively new capability.

This was 9 years ago. Yes, it was a second exe, but it was for new tech that most wouldn't have, and only improved graphics.

It's now 9 years later, the tech is available to the vast majority and its use is integral to the game simulation.

Do you see the difference here? And why a second AVX exe does not make sense in this case?

For science, there's always Intel's SDE that can emulate the AVX instruction set:

Not tried it myself (don't own V3), but it looks to be able to emulate all of Intel's ISA extensions.
Hopefully it can be made to emulate only AVX, as if it emulates SSE too it'll be cripplingly slow.

I have tried this exact thing, and the post else where is not lying. It goes at and stutters around 2 frames per second while paused. This is not an actual solution to the issue because, at best, it’s a slideshow.
It also requires that you mess with a lot of administrator cmd (because for me, the listed command didn’t work), finagle with files, and for your efforts, you can’t even use mods
I made a video showcasing this, that i won’t link but is very easy to find, that demonstrates just how bad this is as a solution.

Just for talking to random people on the internet...

I managed to find a second hand Intel I5 4570 3.2Gh for 35e. not bad not bad. Good improvement over an old g3250 that i wanted to substitute anyway as my old faithful is getting reaaaaly slow in the last months. So happily buy the thermic plastic... and then discover my CPU fan is stuck with the cpu cover... maybe because it has been used a lot and never been removed for 8 years.

So i have a new cpu, but my old cpu is fighting for its life !!!!!

Just continuing to share with random people on the internet.

I managed to change the cpu ! Yeah !
And the best part is : the game works ! Yeah !

Althought much slower thsn expected admittedly... well at least the investement was cheap. And other games run faster uhuh !

But now I need to find a ddr3 ram... as my motherboard is old haha. And 8g is good but not for gaming haha.

Will probably have to buy from some internet place as even my local used stores only hsve ddr4s...

Gotta come back to this thread after reaching late game for the first time:

I'm running an i5-4670K based system and it has been "fine" for running PDX games thus far. Granted, EU4 and others have been a little sluggish towards the end game. However, when playing Victoria 3 late game, my CPU is in absolute pain. Playing on speed 2, my CPU is running flat out and it still takes >5 seconds to advance a day. The experience is not very enjoyable.

So, every one of you, crying here with your 10+ years old rigs: no, your PC would not run this game well at all. I can't imagine how much worse this would be if AVX was not used to ease up the math.

But I won't complain here about PDX making the game too demanding for my PC. The K-series i5 is no slouch (as you should know) and I can play GTA V, Witcher 3 and other GPU heavy games "just fine", but Vic3 is too much for the CPU. Instead of crying in denial, I plan to build a new PC very soon -- I knew this day would come soon enough and now it's here. This rig served me well from 2014 with a GPU upgrade some time back, but it'll have to retire now.

Yeah I actually ordered a 5900x and mobo today. So problem solved for me I guess, but it still sucks as some can't even mess around with the game right now.

BTW I found geforce now pretty ok even on crappy internet (19 mbs adsl here). 1080p 60 obviously, I recommend people try it but adjust your resolution to 1080 in the options I was getting 720 by default. It's playable at least.

How much longer do we have to wait when you remove AVX from our Victoria 3? As time goes on, many people's admiration for your game has been replaced by rejection, they call it full of holes, simple and buggy. But we can't experience these feelings, because thanks to your AVX we are not able to play. We are not able to first get a share of pleasure, and then be disappointed. All this is not. Steamboats, you must let us play. Our processors are not old, we are just fighting for the environment and saving electricity.

I’m afraid your processor is too old for this game.

Also, thank you to everyone responding with explanations in this thread. I certainly learned a lot of useful things about CPUs that will be helpful next time I trouble shoot poor performance.

This sounds like a game optimization issue to me.. plus the i5-4670K is more or less on the same boat as the "ancient" CPUs, just happens to have AVX.
Do you see the difference here? And why a second AVX exe does not make sense in this case?
Interesting. I am still hoping for a benchmark on the mac version with an i5-6500 just to see how well it runs there compared to the windows version.
