Played my first game tonight
I was doing really well, even though I have a very minimal understanding of what was going on, last night I went through the tutorials and messed around with the interface until I was somewhat comfortable, and then I sat down to play my first game tonight.
First of all, I've never played Victoria before, All I know is what I learned from some AARs and the tutorial, but it seemed to be the easiest Paradox game to get into with the playstyle I went for. The interface is very logical and nothing seemed overly out of place for me. I have played HOI3 and EU3, but thats about the limit of my Paradox experience.
My first priority in the game was to run my economy in true capitalist style and let the capitalists run the show, I dropped the tax rate for the rich class down to about 20% and raised my administration to about 65% and left the rest of the budget as stock, I then set both my focuses on colonizing Idaho and Oklahoma. I let the game run it's course and subsided my factories for a while until they made double digit incomes, with the exception of one which never broke even so I let it die. I wasn't taking any kind of notes so I can't remember exactly how I ran things, but I pretty well ignored the Mexico-Texas war and concentrated on my own economy.
During the war I was raising my influence with Mexico, many of the Caribbean nations and some South American nations and post war I had about 4 nations in my sphere of influence and I continued working on getting more over time. Most of the decisions I made where to try to maintain as much conservatism as possible and I thin k I did a pretty good job of it. but I know I slipped on some events because the Civil War event fired in about 1851. I made a big mistake there, I sided with the CSA and suddenly had half the Americas at war with me so I let myself get annexed by the US, which ended my game.
The game ended with the USA as the 3rd highest great power, I learned a lot about how the game functions and found that letting my capitalists do what they want ended up building a very stable economy and I was loaning money all over the world. This strategy may only work well with the US, but it was a very good learning experience.
My tip for anyone else in my situation that thought this game might be too overwhelming is to pay attention to your initial setup and give your capitalists anything they want, they will build your empire for you while you simply guide them along. While watching them I was able to learn how I would do things in a more interventionist game. The only thing I used my military for was rebel-busting, which was simple enough, but tomorrow I may run another game and attempt to save Texas from Mexico, so that should be another learning experience all on it's own.
EDIT: Well, now that this post has been moved to an oversized, cumbersome thread of doom, I will most likely not be replying to anything asked about it. As far as I'm concerned, a thread longer than 5 pages is too long.
