I don't think Mexico is any stronger than they were IRL, or for that matter in Victoria 1. Your beginning forces are enough to save Texas. Then build up your army and generals and you'll be in Mexico City before you know it.

Why do I have unemployed pops with no income getting their needs met for months on end?

Why do I have craftsman who are getting 0% of their everyday/life needs that are getting their luxury needs filled.

Why are artisans perpetually not getting their needs met even at 0% taxes and full subsidies?

Why do people in Wyoming decide hey it's time I promoted to a clerk, and then after 6 months of being unemployed they realize hey this was a bad idea, lets demote back down? Shouldn't they realize there's no jobs for clerks in their state, so they should either move before promoting or just not promote?

It feels like artisans are completely broken and useless. With 0% taxes and 100% subsidies 17% of my artisans are getting none of their needs, and 41% of them are getting their life needs partially met.

I've played to 1850 twice on the demo, it is really excellent! Probably the best grand strategy game I've played...Definitely buying.

But, the first thing I noticed is that the topography of the US is off. I don't really agree with making the Great Plains steppe, and there's a big patch of dense forest in western Oklahoma that in reality is barren wasteland. The Appalachians are also much farther west then in reality.

These things don't adversely effect the game, just things I thought I would point out. Already working on fixing them myself.

I got dowed by UK for no reason, screwed up my war with Mexico.

On another note, yeah..... What the crap is up with the pausing/unpausing? If I pause it, and then like click anywhere it unpauses, this is encredibly frustrating when I want to keep it paused as I do things and check things out.

Krsjan told me that this might be a build issue, anyone else getting problems with pausing not working correctrly?

Probably because it was a pushover in V1?

So? It got pushed over in reality. If you want a challenge, invade Canada and fight the British.

I've read through most of this thread and I saw this brought up but not answered (but if it was I apologize for missing it):

I'm having an error where on the great power screen in the demo it displays 5 powers normally, then the last three say "france" have the swedish flag, and their numbered rankings are all messed up.

Is there any fix for this or do I just need to tough it out until release?

That seems very odd and I would recommend bug reporting it (in the Bug Reporting forum), preferably with screenshots and as much information as you can. Also mark with "Demo" in the title so that the devs can see it is a demo issue, and not an issue in the full release.

EDIT: Unless it is a tutorial (as opposed to the USA demo game).

That's just how the demo is. I don't know why or how, but I don't think that the game considers the tutorials a "normal" game, and so some things are... Strange.

On the other hand, I managed to take Cuba from Spain just by occupying Cuba itself and beating up a couple of Spanish armies. I guess it must be a lot more inclined to fold if it's a significantly weaker country overall or something.

It doesn't survive every time. It actually starts off with quite high militancy and various nationalist rebel groups.
... and even occuping all of british north and south america [sans islands], you still dont have enough warscore to free more than one region of Canada. which is troubling.
You also get war score from winning in battles (as evidenced in the AARs), so you can bump up your warscore by letting them regroup and continuing to fight them.

also, when more than one state joins the union you only get the chance to make one of them a slave state
has anyone figured out a way round that? other than more wars than you can do without break truces

Texas got lucky, the US simply dominated in the later stages of the war... including a series of battles in the Mexican capital. But I guess that isn't the point. It is nice to see a strong Mexican Army that can put up stiff resistance.

America: a more populous, educated nation with a functioning navy and excellent artillery corps against a country which changed governments the way I change clothes.

Somehow, people are eager to explain why the Mexican War was a fluke. Right.

I've seen a few people claim artisans are "broken", so I fired up the demo and took a look:

It swings about a bit as they choose different goods, but most of mine are getting life needs while 40-50% have luxury goods, so they seem to be working ok to me. Sometimes a chunk of them pick a poor good to produce, there's some random in their choice, but they generally switch the month after. Sometimes they are only getting life needs partially met because the good they want isn't on the market.

Most powerful nation in my game appears to be the Jacobin Rebels.

So far they control almost all of Southern England, Northern Ireland, almost all of the netherlands, and as the US I am running around trying to keep them under control in the states.

Also looks like Scotland has decided to take matters into their own hands, have declared independence to fight off the rebels.

;)

Does anyone else think that province labels inside the fog of war should be white or gray, instead of black? It is difficult to read the province names in black text over the darkened province colors.

So? It got pushed over in reality. If you want a challenge, invade Canada and fight the British.

It's actually quite easy to defeat Mexico. But the US didn't fight them until 1848, so obviously your resultswould be different if you attack right away. If you just wait until the 40s you find they are a pushover.
