Yes I do bird sometimes. But I can assure you that this time I just closed the game and went to the something. When I decided to play the game again it was like this, you can even see I didn't bird since the game is at 14 September which was when I saved the game.

So maybe the bird is the cause but at least it wasn't related with crashing the game by itself

Birding, which I admit its the first time I hear this word, has nothing to do with it. We had the same problem in a multi player game with a player that got disconnected and had to hotjoin, and he had the exact same issue. Then I decided to rehost and the same thing happened to me. On the other hand a single player ironman game, that I didnt "bird", is running along fine.

A disconnect is likely to cause exactly the same issues as an intentional crash of the game (commonly referred to as a bird in the EU4 community because "oh look, a bird passed, damn, what happened, did not notice, my game crashed right when I fell in a PU under France, unfortunate, I was distracted by the bird").

Updates always risk to break saves. If this was saved on another version, then yes, you risk that the save breaks. Though that usually happens with major updates.

Trying to load a save game that was fine a moment ago, I get the end game screen, game relaunches, and then my save file is corrupted - along with the backup that's at the same date. Jesus Christ Paradox, fix your s**t ! This is unacceptable !

And what's with the sneak patches ? I got a forced update earlier this morning, but no info on what it contains, not here nor on Steam. Can't you even be bothered to let us know what it is that you're forcing us to download anymore ?

Please get it together, this is not okay.

Thanks paradox, this is a screenshot of my brand new game started on the new hotfix.

Great Paradox, I guess in 1487 the world just gets nuked and humanity dies... Both backups are ruined and if I want to start the campaign again I need to go back at least 15 years. No I have no mods and no this is not from the previous patch...

If you're so selfish that you couldn't care less about problems that literally destroy save games as long as they don't affect you personnally, at least keep it to yourself.

As for bug reports, there's several of them reporting this exact issue in the front page alone, what do you think one more would accomplish ? Do you think the devs are gonna go "Oh, we didn't care before, but now that this one random user is affected as well, let's get to fixing it, and on the double !" ?

When things get really fucked up on an ironman save, all you need to do is open the documents folder/paradox interactive/savegames and move the automatically generated backup save out of the folder before you quit the game. You minimize the game, move the save game out, , quit normally and move the save file back and start from the backup(and your save file will be called f.e Persia_backup_backup etc). Now if he actually crashed the game on purpose yeah that might be it. As said before my single player runs fine still.

Oh I know about that. I only do it when I'm about to break the game, which required some skill in 2017 but now happens on its own. So I kinda lost the spirit of doing exploits, and I don't have 20 backup saves anymore.
I was just explaining the mechanic, and how most people do it.

I'm not even playing ironman and the issue happens. Looking at the error.log it looks like something is causing missing closing curly braces

Doesn't help for ironman or compressed saves, but I made the non-compressed save playable again by finding and replacing '}=' with '='.

It will likely come back I'm assuming.

I could maybe try setting up some mini tool that restores them(not without losing ironman though)
