The Suez and Panama canals were mega-projects that changed shipping forever. Are there other such mega-projects from this time era that should be in this game? I'd love to be able to fund massive -- and maybe harebrained -- undertakings such as a Gibraltar bridge or something else just as grand!

I think the World's Fair should be in it at least. Raiding an entire iron mine, working a few thousand people do death and breaking bank for some useless building that'll earn you prestige™ sounds like a jolly time

Am I imagining this or was there a proposal at the time for a giant bridge between Great Britain and France? I feel like I read that somewhere. Maybe it's from after the games time period, I can't remember exactly.

I hope they belong to a company that collects profits from passing trade or some abstract sum depending on world GDP at least. Also I hope it won't be instantenous like it was in Victoria 2.

There was the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands that murdered a sea.

The Hoover Dam was pretty huge.

But in terms of impact? Just about nothing anyone ever built compares to the impact of the 2 great canals.

Well, I don't know how it could be represented in game, but during the time period there was an extension of the "Canal du Midi" (a big canal in southern France made during Louis XIV that linked Toulouse and the Mediterranean) that stretched it all the way in the other direction to the Atlantic ocean called "Canal de Garonne". Again, I don't know how it could be represented in game since it's not deep enough to be used for military ventures or ocean going ships in general for that matter, but it did significantly help to foster trade in the region and even helped administer it (though with the advent of the railroad that was no longer really a big deal).
So I don't know if it would be relevant for the game, but I share that nonetheless since it's in topic as I think that a canal that stretches almost 200km qualifies as a "megaproject", don't you think ?

The currently still theoretical Kra Isthmus Canal could be a feasible equivalent that could be fun to include from a impact perspective.

I like those two ideas! In my mind, mega-projects do not have to be on same scale of effects as the canals; I should have been more clear.

I hope that there will be plenty of megaprojects just from base mechanics. "Build the trans-siberian railway", not because russia gets some special feature for it, but because it makes sense to do. No special rewards, just the positive consequences of building that railway.

Absolutely, same for most of the inland canals. Building the Canal du Midi should help French industry, but having 10 smaller canals should do similar things (improve infrastructure).

That said, it's gonna be tricky to model just what an impact such middle-of-nowhere railroads as the trans-siberian would have.

They’ve already said that inland canals that were only traversable by trade ships won’t be in the game.

things that might be though: Kiel canal, Corinth canal, maybe even nicaraguan canal as an alternative to panama

Liberate balkans, persuade greece to join in and open up the games in olympia, nemea, delphi and isthmia. Always to repeat there in that same place, no shuffling around the world nonsense.
Wrestling naked, pankrateon and more, much more fun. Sure its a cash and factory produce eater to set up everything from transports to accomodation and more. All for variable prestige, mostly for the builder but also for others. Esp for middling powers flailing to get prestige elsewhere. And then that all important INFLUENCE.

Perhaps soldiers even become good box.. puglist.. sry pankrationists. Giving the chinese boxers later some actual challenge in that field when they get uppity against honest naked imperialism. Or maybe chinese even start going on new travels to the west. Walking all the way from their village to this strange place place of the greatest masters in power to see if they are good for anything.

...maybe even deciding who gets to rule earth, the outlands or the middle kingdom.. :D
Damn a meme.. broke op rules. Test your might, who is the strongest!?
And a alternative way to deal with violent pubfight murderers. Your country needs you.. or be hanged.

It would be really interesting to have that kind of project represented in the game. In my country there are two mega projects that were planned during the times of the empire and only had the resources to do them in the 20th century. The construction of Brasília, the new capital and the transposition of the São Francisco River, which is still in progress.
These mega engineering projects could very well be a cool addition to the game.

It might not be the same kind of mega-project everyone is thinking about, but I keep my fingers crossed that we will have an option to toss a big bag of money at Babbage to finish his Difference Engine, or maybe even Analytical Engine. Give me my computer revolution in the 1800s :D
