"Many refused to acknowledge him as emperor because they believed themselves to be the legitimate heirs, even if they never had a claim to the throne to begin with. Another belief in the minds of a few nobles was that the interregnum was simply continuing with the throne still vacant and Serapion being viewed as a usurper, not the legitimate heir. Finally, those that had been trying to win independence didn't care either way, they didn't recognize Byzantine authority, period."

I like it, another facet to consider too would be that a Plethon type ideologue shows up early and independent douxs start emphasizing their hellenism over their romanness. Perhaps dissatisfied with the wickedness of the emperors they reject the authority of the Caesars in favor of becoming their own little philosopher kings.

Honestly I think its more interesting when a power simply falls than dying a slow death it makes new possibilities and diplomatic moves to consider. I wish that it would happen more often and that the resulting mess would be more difficult to clean up if your a big power looking to expand.

Yeah, I agree. I have a mod that allows for Lower Crown Authority Factions at Autonomous Vassals that if they win win destroy the kingdom or imperial title but it would be nice if such titles could be destroyed easier in vanilla.

1217 - 1266 Part 3

"Happening concurrently with the expansion and completion of the Celtic Union and the fracturing of Byzantium was a renewed effort by the Sunni Caliph, Faisal II, to retake the holy land from the French. Jerusalem was still in Muslim hands but not the rest of it. King Philippe II of France requested aid from the other rulers of Europe and many did answer the call, including England under King Beornræd (I)*, the Holy Roman Empire under Emperor Sieghard "the Unlucky", Aquitaine under King Ferrand/Ferdinand (I)*, and Lombardy under Duke Achille, which led to plenty of jokes during the time and throughout history that this was a reverse Trojan War. In our universe, this probably would have been counted as a Crusade."

Sunni Caliph Faisal II
Caliph%20Faisal%20II_zps1pwr5kan.png

"Many lords also joined the Caliph in battle including Sultan Aydogdu Sönmezid of the Sönmezid Empire. The Sönmezids were the overthrowers and successors to the Seljuks, ruling over much of the lands that the Seljuks had previously. While things looked dire with the Sultan involved, he was already in his fifties and the rigors of campaigning are believed to have hastened a decline in health that led to his death. With succession of his realm briefly contested his forces needed to pull out, hampering the progress they had made in besieging the French ruled holy land."

Sultan Aydogdu
Sultan%20Aydogdu_zpsph8xeomi.png

"In the end, the Sunnis failed in their attempt, the war ending by 1224. In fact, this would end up leading to King Philippe II having a dialogue with the Pope. He felt he needed another Catholic ally in the region. In the end, the Sunni offensive and subsequent talks between the French King and the Pope would lead directly to the Fifth Crusade."

"With the idea of establishing another Catholic state in the Levant, Pope Nicholas III called for a Crusade to liberate Syria in the Spring of 1228. Many of the Christian lords of Europe answered the call. The Kings of England, Ireland, Aragon, Hungary, Castile, Denmark, and Pomerania, the Holy Roman Emperor, and many dukes answered the call. After the Fourth Crusade, this is the next Crusade that is most in the public consciousness of the other world."

"Huge battles were fought, like the Battle of Hama which saw the Christians field nearly 45,000 troops against the Sönmezids near 22,000, around 47,000 men total. Over 24,000 men died during the battle and King Constantine (I)* of Ireland lost an arm and suffered a head injury that left him comatose for a week before he finally died. But, the biggest battle of the Crusade was the final battle, the one that determined the outcome of the war. The Battle of Bichri saw a force of nearly 49,000 crusaders against a force of close to 20,000 Muslims. Roughly 24,000 men died in this battle as well, but the Muslim force lost a little over 18,000 men. The Sönmezids lost a lot of manpower in the war and due to revolts that had been happening before the Crusade were running a deficit at the time. After the massive loses, they surrendered Syria to the Christians."

"Now, the one who ended up ruling Syria was actually a descendant of the Sönmezids through his mother. Kara Gombroon was a Kurdish man who didn't put much stock in religion. We know that he traveled a bit and he found himself in one of the courts of King Philippe II of France's Outremer vassals. He converted to Catholicism to better work with with the people in the area. While France was recovering money and troops at the time of the Crusade and couldn't join, Kara did and the Pope quickly recognized he was the Christian that had the best claim to Syria. When the Crusade was won he became Shah of Syria, the Gombroon Shahdom. He was able to keep his realm after defeating several minor sheikhs and emirs, both those that were independent or vassals of the Sönmezids, that were trying to take back Syria from the Christians."

"And, thus ends our discussion of the Fifth Crusade. We will now finally be looking east to the coming hordes of the Mongols."

OOC: A truly epic war. And yes, the Mongols are coming. I changed their arrival time because I figured with over a century of butterflies Temujin would not be born and someone else would need to unify the clans. We will meet him soon enough.

Good God, dat Anatolia! It's monstrous! Don't get me wrong, it's impressive that you've conquered nearly the entire Levant for Christendom, but I don't often see the AI screw up THAT badly.

I had nothing to do with Christendom winning the Kingdom of Jerusalem (minus Jerusalem itself) and my contribution to the Crusade for Syria ended with Constantine dying maimed, wounded, and incapable.

I have a three day weekend due to MLK Jr. Day so I will try to play and update by Monday. I have gotten rather wrapped up in an Iron Man game. I unified India and got the achievement. Plus the achievements for 15,000 Prestige, 20,000 gold, siring an inbred child and getting over 50,000 and 100,000 score. Also been interesting because Suomenusko reformed and because the Byzantines some how acquired Aquitaine and (most of) the holy land Crusades didn't happen until 1170s when Emirate of Gascogne finally took Toulouse, unlocking them. It's been fun doing my own thing and then every 15 to 20 years looking over at Europe. Anyways, I'm rambling. I will get back to the AAR this weekend, maybe as early as today.

1217 - 1266 Part 4

"The first accounts of the Mongols in this world come from a small scattering of sources which shows them unifying much of Mongolia in 1235 and 1236. Now, you have to remember that all of history diverged after September 1066. The one to unify the Mongols was not Temujin Borjigin but...well sometimes there are little coincidences between Earth-12082015 and our own."

Mongols%20Arrive_zpsvox5tfug.png

"The Genghis Khan of this world was Koketai Borjigin, who sometimes has a Mongolian epithet which translates to "the Victorius." His name comes from the word koke, which can mean blue or, because of the Tengri faith and importance of the sky, everlasting. The -tai suffix is a possessive suffix. Our Genghis Khan's son, Chagatai, founder of the Chagatai Khanate and dynasty, also had the suffix. Chagatai's name came from the word chagan, which means white or richness. The -tai suffix basically gives the meaning 'He who is.' So, Chagatai means 'He who is white' while Koketai means 'He who is blue' or 'He who is everlasting.' Though with language sometimes they can mean both. The story goes that when Koketai was born the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, chocking him. He was literally blue. Though, through struggling he was able to free himself, impressing the male members of his family."

Genghis Khan Koketai Borjigin
Genghis%20Khan%20Koketai%20Borjigin_zpsea5abels.png

"Koketai was from a small minor clan distantly related to the Borjigin. One of the greater chiefs of the clan had lost all his sons through illness and war and had become so impressed with Koketai's service and loyalty he adopted him and made him his heir. Needless to say, the rest of the clans were displeased with this but Koketai had a brilliant mind and could inspire loyalty in some. He defeated and united the Borjigin dissenters and then went on to unite the rest of the clans to his rule, becoming Genghis Khan."

Mongols%20Genghis%20Khan_zpslfqbkwf5.png

"Now, I don't think many of you are interested in the history or etymology of Mongolian names or the details about Koketai's rise to power. You want to hear about his exploits after that. Okay then. In 1237 he attacked the Cumans for their lands. And, if you remember, the Cumans had become Catholic earlier, not that long after the PoD. This was a devastating war. The Khan of Turkestan, brother to the Khan of Cumania, came to his aid as did the Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII. However, the Mongols had over 100,000 men, many horse archers. Cumania fell to Genghis Khan in 1241. Thousands were killed in the aftermath as well. Koketai now had an empire that stretched from near the Pacific to the Carpathian Mountains. After working to incorporate his new lands into his empire, he then set his attention to the annoying busybody that had helped defend against his conquest of Cumania, the Byzantines."

OOC: Things were already interesting, in the Chinese sense of the word, for the successors of Rome. Now they are about to get much, much worse. Well, @der Kriegsherr looks like the Mongols heard your lament and our on their way to fix some border gore. ;)

So is this the end of the Catholic Turks?

So is this the end of the Catholic Turks?

We shall see. Honestly, Turkestan is still independent and Catholic, though no guarantees that the Mongols won't eventually head South. I'm actually thinking of getting some help and when Genghis' son dies splitting up the empire into the Golden Horde and Il-Khanate. That way if they haven't converted by that point the original conversion event will still apply.

EDIT: @wam-mnebu, yeah...it looks like the Catholic Turks may be done unless the Mongols go Catholic themselves.

1217 - 1266 Part 4.5

"As I am sure you recall, Byzantium was a shadow of its former self, having been torn asunder in a succession crisis. Even the vassals Emperor Serapion had were very unruly and demanding. He gave them large amounts of freedom and privileges to the point where the nobility was near autonomous. He also, out of desperation, made the imperial throne elective. All Strategos, viceroyal dukes, and Doux as well as the Emperor could vote among themselves for the next emperor. For those that already ignored imperial authority this was yet another example of why Serapion was not the true emperor. This is why when Serapion suddenly died from poor health he was succeeded not by his son, who still had not reached his majority, but by Michael Margunios, Michael VIII. It was he who had tried to come to Cumania's aid against the Mongols. And it was he who was bearing the full force of Genghis Khan's displeasure now."

Basileus Michael VIII
Basileus%20Michael%20VIII_zpsjbrfdelr.png

"The war started in 1245 and at first the Byzantines had handled themselves rather well. An army about 15,000 strong was sent North and generally caused chaos and held the lands around the Crimea and directly north of it. Things worked well until the Khan's armies showed up. the Byzantine army was decimated and the small amounts of troops stationed throughout the area to keep control were also killed. Then, what is estimated to be around 20,000 to 50,000 men descended on Greece."

"Some more battles were fought but the most important historically was the Battle and Siege of Constantinople. A poetic term from around this time can basically be translated as, 'Theodosian Walls held against the Mongols as well as a castle of sand against the waves of the sea.' Genghis Khan ordered an all out assualt on the city. On July 1, 1248 the Queen of Cities, Constantinople, fell. I don't think I need to go into the kinds of activities that armies of this time would do in a captured city of the enemy."

"Michael VIII had been away leading forces but his new wife Zsuzsa, an Arpad and distant relative of the King of Hungary, and one of his daughters from a previous marriage were taken captive. Zsuzsa was forced into concubinage by the Khan while the Imperial Princess Euphrosyne languished in captivity for years."

"The war continued on until December but with the Fall of Constantinople the morale of the imperial armies was drastically reduced as was any last glimmer of faith in Michael VIII. Genghis Khan died a natural death in his early fifties. He died on December 24, 1248. The war ended and Greece fell to the Mongols on the next day, Christmas Day 1248."

"Michael VIII relocated to Aintep, near Edessa, in Eastern Anatolia. He tried to reorganize and keep control of what was left of the Empire, perhaps in some vain hope that it could be salvaged. However, his vassals, who already were near completely autonomous rebelled. Not having the troops to stand up to them Michael VIII graciously bowed to their demands. The Byzantine Empire, the successor of Rome, was ended before the end of the year. This is a conclusion a near full 200 years earlier than our universe. And, just like in our universe, many would flee to the Italian Peninsula and with their classical learning kick-start a little thing called the Renaissance."

OOC: And thus ends the Byzantines, ahead of schedule. Well, it wasn't the Turks this time, right? Also, for those wondering, Genghis Khan's youngest son Altan received Mongolia as his inheritance and went independent. His eldest son, Temur is the new Khangan.

Does CK2 have ways for wayward Rhomans too boost the tech of new homes? If not that should be an event. Although a gunpowderless renaissance probably would not have been very special. Without all of those conscript militias, new world gold and cannons to carry the new ideas, this renaissance is probably just the cathedral school part 2.

Edit: although now that constantinople's been sacked maybe now is the time for an earlier push for new trade routes?

CK2 doesn't have an event for it, I honestly feel they should have more AU events available. Hell, I don't know about other people but I would shell out good money for a DLC that cultivates plausible AU opportunities in games. By that I mean AU culture melting pots, news events, and the like. Sunset Invasion wasn't really my thing, though I have no problem with people that do like it, and I may try it for achievements at some point. Still, please @Groogy make it happen. You would get a Fry money meme so fast.

And, you are right. While the Renaissance will still happen, it will probably still be in a similar time-frame to our universe. This is more that the seeds for it are going to be planted earlier. I may even go with the direction that a lot more of Eastern Europe (those areas that are Orthodox Christianity) see a bigger influx of Greek expatriates/exiles. If that ends up being the case Rus, Lithuania, and maybe even Pomerania (to an extent) will probably be Western tech in EUIV. And, the push for new trade routes was largely brought about in many ways by the Mongols to begin with, though the Timurids and Ottomans were probably an even bigger effect. The beginning of the Age of Exploration/Colonization will not start until EUIV, if only because that is not possible to do in CK2, but it is entirely possible that this universe's version of Columbus hits the western continents (they would not be named the Americas here) before 1492.

you could kind of have a ck2 age of exploration through a republic in Sinai. I could see a nation like Venice/Genoa who, seeing their Byzantine trade connections dry up, race for silk road workarounds through conquest of egypt and building trade routes along the red sea and persia. Maybe they engineer a crusade like mauritania. Unlike our timeline, there doesnt seem to be a mamluks who are "the pinnacle of islamic civilization" or maybe they are and this world's al-ghazali says that in lament.

I hadn't thought of that, that is a rather good idea. I have maybe one or two more things I personally want to try and we can see what the AI comes up with as well, but that is a good idea.

I do want to say now, that I am taking a page out of @RedTemplar 's Long Lasting Lombards and I am probably only going to go until 1366 (though I will include an update IC explaining what happened during that 78 year period) and then start the long hard work of preparing for EUIV, including learning how to play the game. I'm hoping Red can walk me through the process he used to convert to EUIV himself.

Probably not a bad idea since at this point the ck2 engine might not be able to acknowledge certain changes.

The fact that islam is a non-factor in this world has a lot of implications i feel:
1. I sincerely doubt there would be any sense of spanish unity given how early the reconquista was. Maybe they will develop it later the same way germany did. So i would think giving the spanish the opportunity to form a cultural union like a gb or pol-lit com would be posible, but i dont think an iberian wedding is.
2. conversely, greece probably has quite a bit of byzantine nostalgia with some suggesting it was the rejection of the empire that led to them getting conquered. Though there probably might not even be "greek culture" with some of the states taking on more italian traits, and Thraslid davlat in the mongol controlled greek regions.
3. If the merchant republics do meet africa early, then they would be meeting them technologically on par with themselves as christian kingdoms. So rather than eithiopia and nubia being cut off from the other christian kingdoms, wealth and contact probably would flow much more between them. So The Horn of Africa probably would have been incorporated into Christendom (west/eastern tech?).
4. The Mauretanian Order could probably turn into a Prussian style militarized monarchy if a hohenzorren convinced them to reform.
5. there was a neat what if book about how if norman lost hastings anglo-saxon england probably would not have involved itself with mainland europe but instead stayed culturally within the north sea. A united Celtic kingdom might throw a wrench in that though....
6. if the center of trade does stay in the eastern mediterranean, then those celts, anglo-saxons, and west french (being on both the tail end of the silk route and the novgorod north sea route) are going to be the poorest most backwater nations in christendom.
7. Given that in our world paper was obtained by islamic samarkand and moved through the traderoutes as a closely guarded trade secret of Muslim guilds, it probably has a completely different story in theirs. Maybe it (and gunpowder) came earlier through the fleeing of catholic turks to russia Maybe it doesn't show up until much later given that the mongols through the entire system out of whack.
8. Does russia still have its third rome pledge from the byzantines? Did the Mongols claim it? If the answer to the first question is no, does russian kingdom have the right to call themselves czar? Between the influx of byzantines and christian turks to russia, and the emphasis on the eastern mediterranean medieval russia is probably in a stronger place technologically than ours. Maybe the russians and the north germans are the rennaissance italy of their world (in which case maybe Novgorod Russia is the renaissance Florence in this world).
9. again if the italians meet india first, i would imagine that would have some very severe theological and philosophical implications.
10. I'd imagine that French Jerusalem has as much in common with the French as the lombards do with Sweeden. I would guess if they dont get eaten (and even if they do get eaten by the mongols it would be worse) they would have their own Palestinian language that is french with a whole lot of greek and arab loan words. Its probably the english of their world, a latinized tongue completely adrift from all of its linguistic relatives.

Im really looking forward to the next few postings. and im not super familiar with the coding, but i have made a few private mods and could try to help with the scripting if you want.

Any help is desperately needed once I get to that point.

And, wow, that is a really nice list of the various implications of things. In some ways, as a history major for my undergrad, I feel a little embarrassed to have not realized a lot of this beforehand; I was probably going to look at everything once I finished the CK2 portion. Anyways, to touch on some of what you posted:

The fact that islam is a non-factor in this world has a lot of implications i feel

I wouldn't necessarily say they are a non-factor. They are probably more going to end up a regional power. As things look at the moment, unless the Mongols go Muslim, Africa is Shia and much of the rest of the Middle East is Sunni. Without the Ottomans and having had more successful Crusades the Baltic and near Levant is going to stay predominately Christian.

1. I sincerely doubt there would be any sense of spanish unity given how early the reconquista was. Maybe they will develop it later the same way germany did. So i would think giving the spanish the opportunity to form a cultural union like a gb or pol-lit com would be posible, but i dont think an iberian wedding is.

I imagine that culture also comes into play. All three states are pretty equal in size and strength but of different cultures: Portuguese, Castilian, and Catalan for Portugal, Castile, and Aragon respectively with Basque Navarre off in the corner. You are right that a cultural union is possible but that or military dominance is probably the only way Iberian unification happens in this world.

2. conversely, greece probably has quite a bit of byzantine nostalgia with some suggesting it was the rejection of the empire that led to them getting conquered. Though there probably might not even be "greek culture" with some of the states taking on more italian traits, and Thraslid davlat in the mongol controlled greek regions.

Yeah, in the historiography of this world there will be a few Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Nationalist historians that are going to blame those that helped split the Empire and call them traitors. Greek language/culture will be an interesting subject. I don't know if they will necessarily take on Italian culture wholesale, the independent states may have something resembling what we are used to. And who is to say what will happen when the Mongol empire inevitably falls apart. What does Thraslid davlat mean?

That has a lot of interesting implications if it can happen. And, it would probably end up being Eastern tech, not exactly Western but still ahead of our universe.

4. The Mauretanian Order could probably turn into a Prussian style militarized monarchy if a hohenzorren convinced them to reform.

I am admittedly hoping that we get the Occitan, that is what the Hospitallers are, equivalent of the Hohenzollerns or they go Protestant. I would love a secular Christian kingdom there.

5. there was a neat what if book about how if norman lost hastings anglo-saxon england probably would not have involved itself with mainland europe but instead stayed culturally within the north sea. A united Celtic kingdom might throw a wrench in that though....

That seems to happen in my game a bit to be honest. They involve themselves with their marriage alliances and the Crusades but for the most part have been rather insular or been more involved with Scotland, the HRE, or Scandinavia. And, I would probably play that they are a bit more involved on the continent because the Celtic Union and a strong Scotland limit expansion/economic opportunities.

6. if the center of trade does stay in the eastern mediterranean, then those celts, anglo-saxons, and west french (being on both the tail end of the silk route and the novgorod north sea route) are going to be the poorest most backwater nations in christendom.

On some level that is true. But, as we saw the Mongols have really thrown a wrench in things. In my mind they may be more backwards but at the same time the North may be the ones more likely to try to cross the Atlantic because of their position.

Gunpowder is a little hard to replicate in CK2 given it doesn't appear at all. You do have a point that paper and gunpowder may show up in Europe sooner in this universe. (Then again the talks Dr. David Fletcher is giving here are the highlights. In an in-depth history class discussing differences between the two worlds this would definitely be brought up.)

There is no Russian-Byzantine marriage per se but they do have the Orthodox faith so it isn't too out there to see them claiming to be the successor of Rome (given that is kind of what the Byzantines called themselves, the term Byzantine being a term created later). The Mongols as of where I have played up to, I usually play ahead a few times to get an idea of what may happen or get some interesting results and choose which ever save appeals to me the most, have turned South and taken Turkestan, so more Christian Turks to flee to Rus, Lithuania, and Pomerania. I like your idea and i could honestly see two "centers" of the Renaissance in this world Italy and the Baltic. Eastern Europe, as long as it doesn't fall under the Mongol yoke, will definitely be in a better place in this universe by the mid 15th century and probably Western Tech.

9. again if the italians meet india first, i would imagine that would have some very severe theological and philosophical implications.

Oh yes. I imagine the Reformation and some of the resulting faiths may take some influence from India in this hypothetical scenario.

Yes, Palestine and Morocco are both so linguistically fascinating and make me wish we had more cultural melting pots or I had the ability to mod them/would know if it works with the EUIV converter at all. The Occitan Hospitallers ruling over a majority Berber population probably produces something similar to the Normans and Anglo-Saxons. At this point you have probably the middle grounds of a Berber Romance language.

This is a very fascinating conversation. If you have any more subjects you want to discuss, or keep with the points you already brought up, please do so. The more I stay interested in this the more I play. The more I play the quicker updates happen.

Huh, you get special events if the Byzantine Empire is destroyed? Didn't know that. So as far as expatriate Mongols, this Anatolia = our Kalmykia?
