The fact that skin color is such a sticking point for some people that they start throwing insults is pretty telling, isn't it?

Even the fact that it's just aesthetics notwithstanding, unless you build a time machine there's no way of possibly knowing exactly what people looked like back then. Just guessing is all anyone can do, and your own guesses are no better than Paradox's.
I'm pretty sure north italians didnt look like arabs back then

The box art backgrounds could just be cobbled together. The empress hat in the Russian portraits DLC box art had the wrong frame, for instance. I wouldn't put all that much stock in it.

I wouldn't either. I know when I'm making my sets I have an essentially blank properties file where I can just mix and match everything, if only to see how they look rendered in game.

Yup, definitely darker/pink than northern european pale. Thanks for proving my point. ;)

Yes! Everybody darker than Paul Bettany should be classified as "African" and given sub-Saharan social and racial status! ;)

Indeed :D Where do you think he will draw a line. My guess would be that the Sicilians and Meridionale will get the new faces. Perhaps he will even include the medionale group, but i don't think he will go further than that.

I agree, The Sicilians and Meridonale would make sense.

I don't hate the face pack, it just doesn't make sense for some cultures. Possibly not Greeks, but definitely Armenians.

That is a quite horrible feature about SWMH actually.

It makes sense to me, if you see culture as being the culture of the aristocracy rather than the peasants.

I'm pretty sure north italians didnt look like arabs back then

Neither do they now really (or Spaniards). They often look clearly southern (except those with strong Longobardian genes, who look close to generic European if such a thing even exists) but very rarely with oriental hints; maybe somewhat of an olive shade (no wonder, coffee is about the only thing where no olive oil is not added :p). For the record, Arabs probably shouldn't look like Kurds or Berbers (the Berbers being vaguely European, actually), while a man from the West may normally lack the knowledge to nail down the differences. Back to Europeans, I think individual differences in skin tone between this guy and that guy in the same city can be larger than a sort of standardised difference between one country and the next.

The skin tone on the screenshots appears to be too dark, and Matilda's picture was...just no.

The other point is that while the male nobles wouldn't have avoided sun tan when campaigning, the female nobles locked in castles would have had little opportunity to get it. So acquired heavy tan doesn't work, while inborn heavy tan doesn't work even with modern Italians. Who are not as pale as Count of Vasterbotten's youngest daughter locked in a cloister but aren't really that dark.

I agree, The Sicilians and Meridonale would make sense.

I don't hate the face pack, it just doesn't make sense for some cultures. Possibly not Greeks, but definitely Armenians.

Sicilians aren't overwhelmingly dark either. Darker than the boatful of flaxen-haired Norwegian exchange students at the port but not spectacularly dark.

I agree, The Sicilians and Meridonale would make sense.

I don't hate the face pack, it just doesn't make sense for some cultures. Possibly not Greeks, but definitely Armenians.

It makes sense to me, if you see culture as being the culture of the aristocracy rather than the peasants.

Last time I went to Greece, they were not much darker than I was, and I live on the 50th parallel.

Anyway, as for the aristocracy, castle dwellers won't normally have as dark a complexion as farm workers, barring warriors who campaign heavily (not just a trip to conquer the barony next door but some serious crusading or Guelph-Ghibelin sort of permasquabbles). As much as they sometimes married people from abroad, they should be less affected by population mixing, especially with foreign groups. Not a hard-and-fast rule, for example there once was a half-Cuman king of Hungary. But still.

clearly the lesson to be learned from those pictures is that greek people are statues.

I kinda tended to think the same when I looked at the lady guards in that museum. :p Kidding aside, it was similar in Italy. I eventually asked them how you were supposed to focus on the art when they hired such staff but they simply laughed it off. But anyway, now on a really less jestful tone, those folks will indeed look like ancient statues much of the time, as long as they stay vaguely in shape.

They are doing very weird things with their recent portraits packs :)
The Russians for example are looking very old at 30.

Hope it wont be the same for our italians friends...

It's probably the skin. My bet is that old Russian characters have age-realistic skin, which we aren't prepared to see on the basis of the normal portraits, where even the depiction of illnesses is relatively tame. This would be one of the two realistic features of the Russian portraits (the other being the fact that unlike the default portraits, they don't represent an idealised, handsomer vision of the populace), while overall the default ones are more realistic, as in photo-realistic.

Yup, definitely darker/pink than northern european pale. Thanks for proving my point. ;)

In most cases of Italians and many of Spaniards, I wasn't even really able to tell, other than characteristic facial features on the Italians (around the eyes mostly). And whatever countryside Spaniards from Andalusia or somewhere may look like, post-Visigothic nobles must have looked different.

This reminds me - if you guys look at the gamersgate page for the mediterranean face pack, particularly the 'box art' (that's what you'll call it, I guess), the characters' backgrounds are rather odd. One is clearly Muslim, the other two are nomadic/steppe-dwelling. The latter particularly interests me, as I don'tk now of any nomadic/steppe groups that would qualify as mediterranean other than possibly the Turks in Anatolia (although there is, if I remember correctly, a turkish gfx in the game code, so maybe it's for the Turks!).

Well, those portraits are pretty, although I'd be inclined to see the guy cast against a desert as a tourist. :p The aristocratic lady in the top one is darker than a modern commoner from northern Italy would be, but then possibly a non-cloistered noble somewhere in BYZ could have the look. Can't tell whatever the king is supposed to look like. The box art looks good and definitely acceptable but the same was the case with the Russian pack.

Well good thing this isn't called the Italian skin pack then.

Bad logic. You want to point out a difference and kill his argument but fact is, you can't define "Mediterranean" in a way that doesn't include Italians.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. They got too much colour, I've met Italians before and they were all quite pale.

&

Sorry for my bad english
Italians aren't bronze statue, we have white skin, often with a small tone of bronze, but very, very small

Yeah.

It's going round in circles because there are only two comebacks to people who dislike it.

1. Racism!
2. Don't buy it / make your own.

Not only, but yeah, those two are poor arguments.

Merchant Princes that sail in galleys throughout the Medditenrean in the summer. They are going to be tanned people.

Well, true, but 1) if they sail, and 2) same for Champagne-born crusaders (who do get the cultural switch to Levantine much of the time, which I guess reflects settling down there and casting roots).

Is Anatolia in Europe? They use the Med Face Pack to for Anatolians. You want the MED FACE PACK to represent Italians that live right under the Alps. Stop trying to be white with your Danish Nordic Flag. You are a mutt from South Of the Alps deal with it. No different than Ibrahimovic

Like I said it's hard to define "Mediterranean" without including Italians. Also, it's not like you'd have much in the way of Anatolians for portraits, maybe mayors and a couple of bishops. Otherwise you get either the Byzzies with same old Greek culture or the Seljuk Turks.

That's your opinion, and you are allowed to have it. But don't assume that the rest of us share that opinion. I find the pack quite good actually and i have already bought it.

Do you have a time machine :D ?
