I've been thinking of starting a new game with Tuscany. I want to keep the medici family, and I'd like receive some advise.
Should I just tank republican tradition?
Thanks in advance.

This is something I wish could somehow be implemented into Republics. The Patrician Family system in CK2 was pretty nice, makes me really enjoy playing CK2 as a minor family. Of course, you don't play as a 'character' in EU4, but it would be good if some kind of family system operated within the nation. Some families maintained control of republics for multiples of years, however at the moment, Medicis disappear after the first election and are never heard of again as generic, unheard of families take over. Too late for change in the republics for Common Sense, but perhaps next expansion, some fixed up mechanics for the Republics would be so good.

But yeah, just tank republic tradition since there's no other way to keep the Medici otherwise. And do it really fast. Or cheat.

In vanilla, I'm not actually sure that you'd get the Medici dynasty even if you made Cosimo a monarch, since "Cosimo de Medici" is all one string in the history files. I might be wrong though. If I am, you'd have to get really lucky with events that tank your tradition so that you'd get King Cosimo.

If you're okay with using mods, check out the Repubblica Fiorentina mod in my sig. In that mod, you always have the option to elect a Medici as the Florentine Republic.

I have done this before on Vanilla but I had trouble keeping it, for some reason heirs kept appearing with different surnames so the Medici house vanished unexpectedly. Something odd seems to happen between the transition of Republic to Monarchy which unsettles the surnames slightly. Just keep re-electing medicis, and kill off any other options by making them generals and such. eventually you should be able to flip to a medici king.

I've always felt that it would be nice to have a guarantee that, when your doge dies in office, one of the generic options to succeed him (picked randomly?) always has the same surname as the dead doge. That way you can keep the same family in power, but only by partially giving up control of your stats to the RNG (just like a monarchy).

I don't think you can, at least not in vanilla. I tried both tanking the RT and with the console commands, and the dynasty always changes to a generic one. Mayba I am missing something, but I think the only way to have the Medici in power is via mod or custom nations.

That would make sense, especially so for low RT republics.
