Well... that was to be expected...always a good idea to assume the worst:

MWO Forum:

It has been officially announced that Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries will now be releasing on December 10th 2019 exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

So it will be the GOTY Edition 2021 for me in any winter/summer sale.....I´m still sad. One of the few games I would have bought full price in collectors edition.

I really hope Paradox/ HBS stay away from that practice for BATTLETECH 2

I honestly think it was the best decision they could've made and we will still get the game on Steam and GOG, although it's disappointing we have to wait for it. Like a poster wrote on the BT forums:

1. The deal means more money and more time for MW5. This means a better game. IT also had to be delayed in order to avoid Borderlands 3 and Gears of War 5 that is dropping right on top of MW5's original Sep 10 release date.

2. We get German, French, Russian localization, more marketing push, and hire more employees to polish the game

3. The recoup point to be successful for MW5 is 750.000 units instead of Steam's 1 million

4. If you don't like the EGS, you can get a complete refund and keep all of your preorder MWO content

5. The game will come out on Steam and GOG next year and will benefit from more patches and more mods from the dedicated modding community

6. This deal lessens the financial risks, gives more marketing, a better overall and polished game, higher chance of success and more Mechwarrior games, and finally you can get your money back and wait, and it'll still be on Steam and GOG later

Epic Games is the most disappointing experience i even suffered regarding games.
I bought phoenix point there only because there was no other option and i´m already regretting.
Their launcher took 1 month of "epic player support" only to recognize my account for a few days, and now isn´t working again.
I´ll use it only to download the game and open it outside EGL, as instructed in snapshot games forum.
If i buy Mechwarrior 5 in EGS (a big if that can became a yes only if i manage to play phoenix point flawlessly, which is doubtful), i´ll do the same and uninstall their launcher as soon as possible.
I hope no other game i really want become exclusive there, because 2 months of epic already caused me more headache than i had in 10 years on steam...

I'm just fine with waiting another year for a Steam release. I normally wouldn't have anything against Epic personally, and I'm no fan of Steam or of monolithic business entities in general, but Epic's policy of aggressively pursuing exclusivity feels plain wrong to me.

Not helping is Epic's CEO claiming back in April that they'll back off exclusivity if Steam gave a bigger sale share to developers. Offering an incentive for your competitors to be more competitive? How can that be anything other than a shameless and colossal lie, poorly disguised as a genuine interest in the industry's health? Everything about Epic right now carries a whiff of deception and underhandedness.

Whatever - between HBS and Catalyst, I still have good options for my BT fix throughout 2020.

It would be one thing if the people who pre-ordered still got their Steam keys, but pulling a bait and switch is [words I can't use on this forum] of the highest order.

Uh-huh. And the people who want those pre-order bonuses they were promised on the platform they were promised? Screw them for trying to support the game, I guess. Truly the best decision.

Yep, glad I didn't pre-order or getting excited for this at all. Until Epic fixes its security issues (assuming that the data scanning is a bug, and not a feature) I'm not touch it.

Hope they enjoy rampant piracy and poor sales. But I really hope that HB and Paradox don't go that route.

It's unfortunate; I've already sent my request for a refund, and I've uninstalled MWO (not like the game has anything going for it except the occasional events). As Russ apparently stated that maybe after the first year the game will be sold on other stores, maybe then I'll purchase it (on either Steam or GoG, though I'd prefer the latter). A GotY version with a 50% discount, at the very least...

Anyway, got a somewhat-extensive backlog of games, so it's not like I won't have anything to play. And there's this tactical squad-based game set in the future with tall and several-tons-weight robots that has one expansion yet to launch... :D

Greetings Mechwarriors,

First I want to thank everyone for having so far exercised restraint with their phrasing.
I held off for a bit posting this but in the name of preemptive prudence here's today's friendly reminder;

Forum staff are part of the community: fans like anyone else and thus empathise with the full range of feelings expressed in the community.
But please let us keep in mind the goal for posts about this topic to be civil, respectful, and constructive even when describing a negative feeling or a criticism.
By all means share your perspective, but let us all endeavor to avoid the potential for friction that passionate topics can gravitate towards if self examined vigilance lapses and inertia has its way.
Let us all respect the opinions of others as well, differing or not.
A problem shared is a problem half solved.

Please remember that this is not PGI's site even though we are all Battletech/Mechwarrior fans, so let's continue to move forward without getting to the point that discussion of this topic begins to appear like a PGI complaint box rather than the PDX forum/ HBS BT subforum and thus avoiding the need for official moderation of the topic.

As always: Thank you very much Mechwarriors,
Carry on.

Well, guess I'll shove that one further back on my to-get list. Wasn't planning to get it until after it came out anyway (and had seen some reviews...) No worries, I'm intermidably patient.

Heck, I've not played Flashpoint yet (and I haven't even bought Urban Warfare yet). Yes, yes, I know, i'm terrible, but I have so much to play at the moment, it is a bit daft for me to be getting stuff long before I want to play it (unless it's on sale or something).

And I made the rather silly mistake a week or two ago of buying Stardew Valley (on sale, plus a fiver off from Steam as well, thinking I might get board after a couple of hours and it might be a bit of a game to play with an hour or two free... Sixty-odd hours later...!)

I blame the MW5 exclusive epic games store!

Hey, [Mod edit: Moved]

While I have no pony in the race for MW5, I don't understand the hate for the Epic store. I mean sure, I understand people being upset that games that were initially going to be on steam and gog (i think that's the other launcher) are now exclusively on Epic but the developers, for the most part, have been pretty forthright in their dealings with that decision. Offering refunds for the games that are no longer, currently, being offered on the launcher of choice. Still you have people frothing at the mouth and acting like the world is going to end because of the choice.

Sure epic isn't as developed as steam. But it's also in its infancy and it will, eventually, get all those features.

But but SPYWARE!!!!!!! Well, the only thing I was able to find on the whole "spyware" front was that the EGS read the steam friends list without permission. Wow, massive spying by big brother there. Now, I will admit that my Google-fu could have been weak and I didn't uncover the full story but I can only make decisions on the information I have at hand.

As for the implications that the company is now run by the Chinese company Tencent, again, all I could find was that they were only an investor. A decent amount of investment at 40% but that's still not controlling interest so I'm still not sure what the big deal is.

Sure, you have to open another launcher . . but so what? Oh wait DRM!!!! But as far as I can tell, Steam utilizes DRM as well but I guess that's okay . . . .

Anywho . . there's my spiel [Mod edit: Moved]

I am on the fence about if I want a refund or not :/.

I am not happy about this decision and I definitely do not like Epic. I have seen many reasons covering why they are an anti-consumer experience, and just the way they create a division in the consumer base alone is disheartening.

I have till September to decide so I will have to give this some thought. If this was any other franchise, I would have already submitted my refund request. BattleTech is my absolute favorite PC gaming franchise and one of my most favorite Sci-Fi franchises of all time. It will be a very tough decision.

I listened to the AMA today and felt like Russ made a reasonable business decision. I'm keeping my preorder, and will deal with the EGS as little as humanly possible.

I'll keep you all posted on how the closed Beta goes, etc.
I refuse to interact with Epic in any capacity, and I'm not willing to install spyware on my computer in order to play MW5. I got my refund, and won't be buying unless it comes to Steam or GOG.

Whether or not it was a reasonable business decision by Russ is another matter (and I'm more inclined to think that this was less a reasonable business decision, and more a necessary one. In that, PGI could very well have folded in the near future without a large cash infusion, which Epic has now provided).

Even if it was necessary for PGI, Russ repeatedly lied to and misled customers who pre-ordered the game. I don't trust him, which means he doesn't get my money until I know that MW5 is worth it.

Regardless of the difference between platforms, one side buying out exclusivity after a dev has already sold pre-orders on the other side is a platform I want no part of.

I was hoping PGI could turn it around with MW5 and extensive modding support, but we're hit with another classic PGI PR blunder. I didn't preorder and I won't be playing this one at all.

I hope Paradox and HBS never go the route of platform exclusivity for upcoming titles.
