I tried to figure out mechanics behind elections. Johan earlier posted that elections are won by person with biggest 'charisma'+'popularity'+'family prestige'; but as I currently rework family prestige and I want to bring it down heavily. I want the choices I make during game have some other effect then simply 'make 1000 to 975, but he'll win elections anyway '

So, could someone reveal mechanism behind elections?
Secret Master? :D

Sorry, I don't have hard numbers on elections. Part of the difficulty is all the events characters fire for themselves that you may not see, modifying their popularity or family prestige.

I suppose, if you were really interested, you could save a day prior to an election, and analyze/modify the file to see what results you get. Way back in the days of EU2, we used a similar method to look into HRE elections (which showed a definite Hapsburg bonus biasing the elections).

Hmmm, it would be a good idea, but it takes 5min for Rome to load on my computer (proc 1.8 ghz, 1gb ram, 256mb gfx.... Vista :( ). So I don't think I'll be able to try it out. Anyone else could give it a try?
I hope that in future there will be some release that will clear to us all the family prestige/election mechanics.

And, as always, thanks for feedback. Pity that you're the only one from 'the devs' that give us hand in modding, yet your help is only appreciated more.

BTW, am I the only one who noticed that family prestige can be brought from country to country? In my current (modified) Carthage game Barcids and Gisgo started with 500 family prestige, but now they have to competete with... Iulii! Poor Iulia somehow switched sides :p

I've found that aspect of family prestige strange too - should the Barcid family have 1000 prestige in Rome just because they do in Carthage? Seems odd - it would make more sense I think if it was linked to culture, so a Greek family would retain the same prestige in other Greek states, but would have reduced prestige in Rome or Carthage.

I suspect that's not easily moddable though, and not exactly a big deal!

Well, I'm not one of the Devs. I'm just a Rome beta tester with with a loud mouth. For my sins, they made me a Demi-Moderator. :D

And I'm still exploring the whole Modding thing for my own personal reasons. By the time 1.2 is out, I hope to have an extensive government mod that will simulate the temporary dictatorships mandated by the Roman Senate during the period rather than the permanent, and all powerful, Dictatorship form.

We could create events that lower family prestige on foreign lands, but it would be too complicated... As you pointed out, it's a minor issue; nontheless, I'll post it in the bug forums ;)

Your loud mouth helped us quite a lot till now - revealing game mechanics, pointing out triggers. Please, continue :D :p

As for mod, I'm waiting for one as well...

Actually I don't think we can. An event lowering family prestige will lower their global prestige. But we can make events lowering the family prestige of cultures whose "fatherland" is extinct. That way any survivors wont be popular in the new regime.

To be honest, the best thing would be to bias elections in favor of people with the right culture and religion. I mean, it is a bit silly that some Carthaginian POW could be elected consul of Rome simply because his family is prestigious and he is popular and he got "naturalized" in some way. Then the family prestige carrying over to other countries wouldn't be such a big deal. And, in all fairness, by having family prestige be universal, you do have the effect of rebel factions recognizing family prestige in the same way as their main faction (which, I suspect, is the reason why this is the way it is).

Have any of you actually seen some weirdo get elected in your games thanks to his family prestige when it otherwise wouldn't make sense?

Does anyone know if we can mod some of the election mechanism?

More precisely I want to make the following adjustments:
1 allowing females to be elected
2 extending the election term from 2 years to lifetime.
3 perhaps even make different election rules for different government types.

Needless to say this isn't for a historical mod.

Nope. But I quit that game I played, since lag kills it :/ (I'm poor Vista owner :/ - soon to buy something stronger, w/o Vista :D)

Pity that we don't get that many prisoners as in demo. This was great feature ;)

Sute]{h, AFAIK election mechanic is hardcoded, I couldn't find it anywhere. However, you could probably create an event that, under certain conditions, create government with 'monarchy=yes' (kind of dictatorship) and then reverts back to republic after his death. So my shot will be yes for 2, no for 1 and 3.
