personally I find it really hard to get a sense of what my company paint scheme will look like with the present painter. I have to flip back and forth between the mech bay and painter in captain's quarters to get any decent idea.

could you please setup the, mini atlas to better reflect how it will look on the field? Even if its just one pattern would help immensely

really any improvement in the painting schemes would help

specifically i mean
  1. ability to see an actual mech with your color choices
  2. any kind of ability to view the mechs in their totality outside of missions
  3. an indication of how the patterns will show up

I just realized that your company crest is not displayed anywhere on the mech either. This feels a bit weird not to have them.
would be a very nice and important addition.

I mean it updates all over the argo, but never on any mech

What would be nice is if they imported a similar function from the mechlab in MWO to just paint the mechs on the spot...pretty much every game in the IP that featured a mechlab had this option, with varying degrees of resolution and options.

The pre-order and backer paint schemes do include the company crest. I would like to see the crest included on more paint schemes, at least in one spot on each mech.

I also agree that more preview options for paint schemes would be a great QoL improvement.

-wait really? but why make such a no-brainier feature an exclusive??? would there be conflict "if" tomorrow HB decided to enable every player so they can have their company's emblem (or crest) visible on their mechs?
Lack of resources, I assume. Emblems are an additional customizable option. It would take time to find a place for them on each paint scheme of each mech and test it to make sure it looks good with a variety of camo colors. HBS is a small studio and Battletech is an ambitious project. For every extra feature they want to add, there is likely at least one that they won't be able to add if they spend the time on this one.

really?!?! So the functionality is already there?
kind of a bad thing to make " exclusive " in my opinion would have been better to make custom company emblems exclusive. Or the ability to color shift existing emblems.
since the functionality is already there, neither would be a big job...

The functionality of calling a specific graphic on a specific camo scheme exists.

The functionality of where an emblem will fit on each specific mech such that it doesn't mess with hardpoints and fits with the camo scheme does not.

The devs made a few specific camo schemes and graphics as part of the Kickstarter and pre-order bonuses. These include player emblems. The other camo schemes have not had the work put into them to include emblems.

The camo schemes are exclusive. The ability to include emblems on other mechs is not, because it doesn't exist.

Even if it isn't a big job, which I doubt it would be as small as it might seem, it would still take time away from developing other things, like new maps or mechs.

This is the key factor. A FEW mechs have paintschemes that allow this option. A FEW. Not all of them. So it wouldn't be a simple matter of 'enabling' it for everyone else.

IIRC the only one i'm able to do this with is on the Shadowhawk, i didn't valhalla back so I missed out on those paintschemes and the ability to add emblems to those chassis as well.

Wait... i think i might be able to do something with an Atlas too

...ok...how do we get this?

Generally you don't, that's the problem.
  • There are the set of 8 Valhalla skins, where most have emblems, some don't and others have them but in amazingly bad places like under weapons. This was only possible to buy during the initial KS campaign and some time afterwards.
  • The one above is the Pre-Order only SHD "Umbra" skin via Steam/GoG/PDX, the current deluxe edition does not unlock this.
  • There is the GenCon FS9 skin with an emblem on the front LT. You needed to pre-order physically at GenCon (what year was it 2014-17?)
  • There is the SBA Atlas Backer Skin, but I don't think this one has an emblem. Given to every KS backer.
So, for all the special skins, there is no real way to earn or buy them at this time. One Post-Launch Valhalla reward was given out for the fan run "Valhalla Tourney" months ago. HBS was kind enough to grant the winner the Valhalla status, but that's been it.

I believe someone with some coding experience might be able to re-activate emblems on default skins as a mod, as some of them have lingering bits of code and files that suggest support for showing emblems was being worked on. However, no one has taken the dive to figure this one out yet. Even then, you might just do all the digging to find out it was incomplete or won't align correctly to the in-game skin. If you look closely on the ones we have, a lot of them are "off" by a couple degrees and some of them were even backwards at launch and then removed.

I'd love to have full company emblems on every default skin. It's something that doesn't change any game play, but I feel like something is missing every time a unit comes in to camera and isn't emblazoned with it's heraldry.
