How are people using a second mech bay? Since we can only deploy 4 mechs at a time, it seems like having a 2nd bay full of mechs doesn't really make a lot of sense.

The only way I've even come close to possibly justifying it is having 1 bay with a lance for "cold" biomes (less heat sinks, more energy weapons, etc.) and a second bay for "hot" biomes (more heat sinks, less energy weapons, etc.)

I am curious how others are using the mech bays though.

Thats one way to do it. But also simply to have some spare mechs to do missions if your mains beeing repaired after suffering a bunch of damage.

Up to the point where I decided I wanted a complete collection of every assault mech... I wasn't.

I honestly found a lot of the Argo upgrades kinda worthless in the long run, and just not worth the monthly upkeep. I'm sure there are people out there that had several different lances based on the planet, but I had a handful of mechs that I used and everything else went into storage and was sold.

Anything you're is just additional monthly cost... I'd rather have some cash to explore off the beaten path then spend all my time trying to make ends meat.

I have all 3 unlocked now. first one is my main lance with 2 backup mechs. Second bay is my Backup lance with 2 spares as well. Third bay is 2 lights for scouts and then 4 specialty mechs for certain situations, one is a dual AC20 monster for close in fights, one is a spare LRM boat, and the other 2 are low heat options for moons/desert planets.

Depending on the mission i may drop one of the scouts as part of either lance. I also now have 8 pilots so even if one lance takes a total loss i can still drop the next day if needed.

I also like having a second MechBay because I can modify a newly acquired mech without sending an existing into storage.

Afterall, if I had only one and no room... I'd have to send one I am using into storage, mess with the new one, find I don't like it and send it to storage, bring the old mech back into the active mechbay, and then figure out how I had it equipped :).

That's a lot of work. I'd rather just have multiple bays. Besides, sometimes I just want to take out different mechs anyway.

I have Mech Bay 2 and just have 2 mechs in it (so I have a total of 7 I can rotate around). There's some mechs that I won't take on convoys, so 7 seems a good number for me right now.

So for once thing you might be interested in running jobs back-to-back without waiting for the mechs to be repaired - or you might at some point start to have different sets for different kinds of jobs...

... for example later on in the campaign you will get suggestions on what to bring for a job, say for example "quick jumpcapable mechs will do very well here" or "You should bring a mix of assault and heavy mechs.." - and then for the final mission you need two lances, as you will have one mission, and then be thrown right in the next, which means you need to be able to replace between 0 and 4 mechs as well as their pilots on the fly - or you will go into the finale with already damaged mechs...

The first reason I got a second one was because I had two missions in a row where I just happened to get enough random parts to complete 4 mechs after the second one. I didn't have enough room in the first bay when they auto completed to whole mechs and it made me choose 2 to put into storage. So it's just nice to have for run off and a spare lance for less down time. Plus, tech points nice.

Okay, with one mechbay you only have six mechs. So, launch on a mission on a planet, get some structural damage on two mechs, and then next mission you take you're either going out damaged, or taking different mechs. Okay, well you've still four, but what if your brawlhawk loses a torso? Well then, now you've only three, and whilst yeah, I done some missions a mech or two down, it's so much nicer to have that second bay with more backup mechs so you can have more in repair an more to work with. What if when you land you've still a mech in repairs?

Also it's nice to not hafta sell off your damage mechs to make way for new ones. I do like taking the time to repair some of my more longstanding mechs an retire em to storage rather'n selling em for peanuts. I still don't use the third, but I could see the draw for some.

For the second mech bay, I guess we'd need to figure out the cost/benefit analysis per month.

You are paying 25k per month (+ any filled mechbays), but getting 3 tech points (+ additional upgrades for tech points unlocked).

The question then becomes can the 3 tech points offset the cost by letting you get your A team on more missions per month? As you start doing harder missions, 25k per month isn't that much.

It is nice to have free slots for new mechs salvaged. Gives you a chance to try out some possible builds before deciding to store it or another mech.

I mostly use it so I can have a variety of mechs equipped at once. Sometimes you want more laser boats, sometimes you want more missile boats, etc.

Also, the extra tech points are nice.

I have 3 mechbays full, and I would upgrade for a 4th. I use (almost) all of these mechs, and I have a blast coming up with lances that mix and match, like the Stalker keeping its feet cold by the water while the Shadow Hawk jumps around pinging, the Jenner baiting and the Orion closing in... I should write a song...

High heat mechs are good on cold planets, but you want efficient heat mechs on moons, etc... And some missions clearly benefit from all jump jets or speedy mechs, etc...

Plus I like to be able to refit/repair and not constantly have to swap mechs out. 1 mech bay, to me, isn't quite enough. 3, I think, would be too many, since we can only ever deploy one lance (which I find disappointing, I'd love to field a full company and have epic battles.)
