I just bought AOD the other day, playing vanilla 1.04.
I started with a game as Japan, Normal/furious. As I invaded China I expected some resistance, but all the AI did was to throw 1 division attacks at me, even if they had 10-20 divisions in the province and easily could have defeated me.
It got a little harder when I later invaded India and Vietnam, fighting the allies, but again the AI never uses its full "power".

Am I missing something here or?

Yeah it's sort of a known thing that Nat. China is a bit of a doormat in 1.04. But some people say it sometimes grow into a 300 divisions monster. I guess it's better to strike early than too late.

You can try to play Multiplayer, but that's hard to get a game going.

Also it's 'meek', not 'meak'

Let's hope 1.05 will bring about good changes with Chinese AI.

are we playing the same game here?

in all my games as japan, they always seem to become huge monsters with over 350 divs, most of them are militia though. the battle for china is one thats full of attrition and slow maneuvres that fill the entire front line. and this is standard, commy and nat chinas fighting me. the small warlords have fought me occasionally, but they are as usual worthless. it usually takes me 2 years to the day to puppet the chinese.

as for the AI, i think ive noticed something. the AI moves their units to provinces straight up, and if that province falls, then the AI doesnt stop the enemy units from attacking, so its kind of stupid on that regard.

We sure are playing the same game. They have plenty of divisions, thats not their problem. They just refuse to use them!

I found that you can pull a large force in to one area in the north just south of Beiping by engaging their main force at favorable odds, cross that river (whichever one it is...) and flank push them to one side of Nanjing (in or out, whatever, though out is better) and encircle but not capture the city.

Rest is dealing with Japan. Swing through India at Hanoi and Bangkok with armor and it should be cake. (You'll still have some attrition issues, but these can be greatly mitigated if you make good use of logistical strikes on both Japan itself and supply chokepoints like Hanoi.)

Install this. It will help the Nationalist China AI to perform somewhat better.

http://www.filefront.com/16515025/China-AI-Improvement-Pack.rar/

I tried it for 2 years (of war) and nat china defends better, she seems to use her units better and establish better front lines. But the offensives are still kinda absent. She has maybe 40 units spread over 3 provinces, and as long as I have 3-6 units in a province she will only attack with 1-2 units at a time.

The problem of attacking with one or two divisions is not limited to China.

Playing as Germany, I have had this issue with both the UK and the USSR. 95% of the time I will be attacked by 1 to 5 divisions out of stacks of up to 15 or 20. I have rarely experienced a full strength attack from any enemy (perhaps due to the AI misunderstanding the stacking effect).

Also, I have noticed a tendancy on the part of the AI not to attack from multiple directions when it has the ocassion to do so. Only about 20% of the time will it take advantage of the multi-directional attack bonus.

That is weird. How come AOD managed to get this one wrong? In HOI2 the AI used most of its power to attack.

Playing as the USSR I find the AI attacks from muliple directions with powerful stacks, fails to leave gaps or weaknesses in the rets of it's front line and even shows signs of cycling it's attacking units to keep their readiness up.

I have never played any game against such a competent battlefield AI.
(There are some silly strategic decisions, like Italy and the UK both getting obsessed with Egypt to the exclusion of all else, but I assume there are still tweaks that can be made in this direction.)

I am just using AoD 1.04.

Maybe becuase I have been Germany's centre of attention, and it is a large homogenous front, the AI copes OK.

I have played Germany before and, attacking France in 1940, the French response was quite aggressive. They had invaded Germany across the Rhine from the Maginot Line just before I started going through the Ardennes.
