In my experience, it doesn't matter very much how strong France seems in the south (where a lot of its cores have been removed). If it doesn't consolidate in the north (where it has lots of rich, cored provinces) it gets torn apart. I'd be surprised if that France didn't get wrecked...but, then again, England has a pretty poor record in the current version...
