This is something most people don't know about. In the countries who fought in WWI, the 11th of November is celebrated. Others celebrate VE-Day, may 8th(russia may 9th) and again others the end of the war Asia. Then you have us, here in the Netherlands. We have 2 days, which have become national days in the 1990'ties. Historically, May 5th was the day that the German troops in the Netherlands surrendered. This happened in a hotel between the lines of the Canadians, represented by general Foulkes, and the Germans, represented by general Blazkowitz. Attending the capitulation was prince Bernard, representing the dutch gouvernment in exile. The 2 national days each represent something different. 4 May we remember the dead, be it civillian, militairy, holocaustvictim, colonial, or militairy after the second world war. May 5th we celebrate that we live in freedom. And it's also my birtday.
