I've been thinking about doing a game of Portuguese expats going native in India and forming an empire there. The plan is to sell my European provinces and move the capital to India and culture shift. Is it possible to pick up the Master of India achievement while I'm at it? I've looked at the code but I'm not sure if the possible scope means that I need to maintain my capital in Europe or if it's just were I need to start.

Requirements listed under 'possible' are only checked at game start. Since 'happened' never checks that your capital is still in Europe, you can do that. Incidentally, IMO the easiest nation for Master of India is the Ottomans. They can vassalize Indians and get cheaper cores, plus the provinces won't be overseas as long as you conquer a land-connection from Thrace. But far be it from me to tell a bro how to have fun, so if this is how you want to go for it, I'm sure you'll find it doable.

Never thought of that. With a culture flip, you could even form Mughals for a free government reform, Timurid ideas, and Indian troops (which during the midgame are nearly equal to western).

The ADM to switch capitols and the -stab from culture shift are hardly free, but yes you can do that :). It's not hard to conquer India as a horde though.

Since I just played an Ottomans game (as usual abandoned in the early 1600s), I don't want to play them again, but I do want to try for Master of India. What's the next easiest nation for that?

It barely matters because India is weak. I'd be tempted to say a horde, but in all honesty if you *just* want the achievement, anybody out of Castille, Portugal, and England can trivially accomplish it. You can hit India by early 1500's and even if you have to core every last province, make the achievement without trouble. The hordes can do it faster, as can an "OPM conquers Sind and loses capitol at home" approach, though the latter would still have to core. Still, it would be interesting to see a Sunni or Hindu East Frisia in the 1400's running roughshod in India :p.

(1) Assuming I do it with Portugal, and that I'm primarily concerned with the achievement, is it still worthwhile to colonize the new world also, or will that just take resources from the conquest of India?

(2) Does it make sense to protectorate as much of India as I can, hope for westernization, and then vassalize/annex? It's not as if I can core it all at once anyway, so why not use both tactics?

(3) I assume admin ideas is a must for the coring?

If you protectorate them, they will become independent when they westernize (and their westernizing is not guaranteed), so that doesn't really help you. If you start early enough and take Admin ideas, you should actually be able to core all of it.

YEah, exactly. Seems like the obvious strategy. Properly executed, seems like you can avoid about half of the self coring you would otherwise need. Maybe more, depending upon the pace of westernization.

I don't think the game is coded to switch a vassal back to a protectorate if they fail to westernize.

Vassals are grandfathered AFAIK. That means if you vassal someone who is westernizing and rebels break them back, they will remain vassal.
