Does mine Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz processor works?

More than well.
It has two cores, so the speed is 1.86 * 2.

No it isn't. That's not how it works at all. Dual core processors by intel are very efficient, but this particular chip still only operates at 1.86mhz. If EU3 were multi-threaded, then 2 cores might equate to double the speed, but it isn't. However, this CPU is more than adequate.

Old Box + New Video Card = It Works

My old 600MHz 512MB PIII Dell box runs the game (a little slowly) with no problems other than having to be patient at the first of each month. I did have to install a video card that supports pixelshader 2.0.

And, surprisingly, not one single CTD or lockup.

Yes, usually I think you only get about 50% more performance from a 2nd CPU or core assuming your software supports it. However, Pentium M, Core, and Core 2 CPUs are 50-60% faster than a P4 at the same clock speed even without the 2nd core (which the P-M doesn't even have of course).

Interesting. About how long does it take to play a month or a year at full speed without pausing? What video card did you get?

Well guys, I have tried everything and the game is still slow. I have defragged, I have upgraded my video card, I have disabled every non-important background program, I have tried all kinds of resolutions, including my native resolution (this is a LCD monitor) and no go.

Please, please, please, if anyone has any ideas, let me know before I go out and buy some new hardware. Of even if you think I need new hardware, let me know. I just really really want to enjoy this game but it doesn't seem to want to work for me.

Here are my specs again:
Radeon 9600
2.4 ghz pentium
1 gig RAM

The Radeon 9600 is the root of your performance issues.

To tell the truth, I've never tried full-speed. At 3 hash-mark speed, it takes 15-20 minutes to do a year. And I'm comfortable with that pace. I do pause whenerver I want to do something non-trivial, but still 15-20 minutes per year is ok.

I found a GeForce 6200LE for about $60 US that supports pixelshader 2.0.
