EUIII on Laptops or "older" PC's

I've check the FAQ but couldn't see anything about this.

Does anyone know if EUIII is planned to be as "compatible" as Paradox's other games with older PC and Laptops.

I'm worried that the new graphics will mean that I will no longer be able to use it on my work laptop, which doesn't have the latest graphic's cards of course, while traveling and at "work" - during breaks only of course :) ;) .

Anyone with info or thoughts on this?.

Cheers, Ice

I realize that I sound like a moron here, but I have no way of knowing if I have those or not. Uh…help?

And I also have a laptop, meaning that I can’t replace the graphics card. Which, needless to say, isn’t good.

just do a google search on your graphics card, preferably checking the official site of the company that made it. they should have a list of specifications, which would hopefully include something about pixel shaders. if not, find a review of the card.

From wikipedia

"Graphic chipsets with pixel shader support
While the ATI Radeon 7xxx series and NVIDIA GeForce2/GeForce4 MX series do have somewhat programmable pixel pipelines, they are not flexible enough to run shader programs of level 1.0. Shader Model 1.1 was the first standard used in games, and was first supported in DirectX 8.0.[1]

The list below shows the highest pixel shader version supported by each card family.

*Version 1.1 (DirectX 8.0)
nVidia GeForce3 series
Matrox Parhelia series
SiS Xabre series
[edit]

*Version 1.3 (DirectX 8.0a)
nVidia GeForce4 Ti / Go 4200 series (not MX)
SiS Mirage 2
[edit]

*Version 1.4 (DirectX 8.1)
ATI Radeon 8500 - 9250 series
[edit]

*Version 2.0 (DirectX 9.0)
ATI Radeon 9500/9550/9600/9700/9800 series
ATI Radeon X300/X600 series
ATI Express-200 integrated graphics
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 and 950 series
XGI Volari series
SiS Mirage 3 (as yet unreleased)
S3 Chrome series, including DeltaChrome and GammaChrome but excluding Unichrome integrated graphics

*Version 2.0x (DirectX 9.0b)

Version 2.0x comprises of two versions - version 2.0a (for nVidia GeForce FX series) and version 2.0b (for ATI Radeon X700/X800/X850 series). These versions expose additional features over version 2.0 and are usually used for increased performance with the target hardware (GeForce FX or Radeon X700/X800/X850).
nVidia GeForce FX series
ATI Radeon X700/X800/X850 series
[edit]

*Version 3.0 (DirectX 9.0c)
nVidia GeForce 6 Series
nVidia GeForce 7 Series
ATI Radeon X1K series
[edit]

*Version 4.0 (DirectX 10.0)
nVidia GeForce 8 Series
ATI Radeon R600 series"

Amazingly enough, I don’t know what my graphics card is. :eek:o If it is good enough to play, say, a modern FPS or Rome: Total War (both at low graphics settings, but without much lag etc.) do you think that will be enough?

Thank you very much. It turns out that I have an ATI Radeon X300, which is just barley good enough to run EUIII (the Pixelshader part, anyway). Huzzah!

Wow, for a non-graphically amazing game this seems kind of demanding.

512 Ram and 2.5 GHz Processsor cant be the req's. Is that just what your machine is?

I have 512 RAM exactly and only 1.4 GHz processor, yet I can run RTW and many FPS's just fine. There is something wrong with paradox games when they all lag more than battles in RTW. I mean jesus, EU3 has horrible graphics compared to modern games, but the same system requirements.

Thats about what I expect...

Compared to a FPS EUIII is doing a lot more calculations and keeping track of a lot more data (consider the size/complexity of the saved games, and how much of that would change in a minute of playing) and so you should expect the RAM and CPU requirements to be significantly highter than a simple FPS. Of course for the graphics cards you would expect a lower requirement for EUIII than a modern FPS.

Comparing to RTW you have to take other things into account. Decent performance for RTW takes a while for the AI to play out each turn. Decent performance for EUIII will have the AI play a day (turn) in less than a second. Thats necessary because EUIII will have many more turns that RTW.

There's no official word on the requierments yet (apart from the pixelshader thing).

I'm no tech expert, but I'd assume it also eats quite a lot more resources to run the game with so much of the stuff outside the .exe in text files. But as a way to enable relatively easy and very through modding it won't be changed.

And before we get into a discussion about why EU3 would demand such a high-end GPU, keep in mind that pixel shader 2.0 is from the Directx 9 standard, launched in 2003 - it will be four years old technology when the game is released. Computer graphics-wise, that's ancient.

Edit to avoid misunderstandings: It is possible to install directx 9 even if your card does not support all options. This does not mean that your computer can handle non-supported options.
