Thinking of starting development of a Mass Effect mod. It seems like a great mod for a game like Stellaris and from what I can see there aren't any current projects like this.

So far I have some ideas, but certainly willing to listen to others:
  • Pre-determined universe with races and alliances set up already.
  • Possible "bookmark" saves for different times in Mass Effect universe.
  • Reaper storyline through large event chains and modifiers (needs more planning)
  • Hyperlanes only to simulate the Mass Relays. Possibly seeded 3D models of relays?
  • Overhauling technologies to replicate the Mass Effect universe.
  • Possibly replace science ships with "intel frigates" with leaders like Commander Shepard/Captain Kirrahe
  • More?
So far I'm drawing up a table of the races, their government, and traits. It's not too far along but I'll post it here:

System Alliance - Indirect Democracy - Militarist, Xenophobe, Individualists
Turian Hierarchy - (Military Republic works best but clashes with Ethos) - Fanatic Militarist, Collectivist
Asari - Direct Democracy - Xenophiles, (Either materialist or spiritualist)
Salarian Union - () - Materialist, (), ()

Other races would of course be the Batarians, Krogans, Elcor, Volus, Vorcha etc.

There's a lot do, it remains to be seen if we can create governments, I imagine you can which would make it easier.

What races would be playable?

Humans, Turians, Salarians, Asari, Hanars, Volus, Elcor, Drell, Quarians, Geth, Batarians and Krogans are must-have but I am not sure about Vorcha, Rachni and Proteans (would love these last two but they are anachronistic)
Cerberus and Omega are probably too little to be worth including as something other than pirates or minors

In general I'd also enjoy a version of this mod which just places ME universe races in symmetrical anachronic start in regular random galaxy ;)

One more badass bookmark could be Prothean Cycle: the Prothean Empire is dominating in the galaxy but the game begins along the galactic invasion of Reapers. So you are playing Protheans in desperate hard scenario. In the meanwhile all major races of ME are on the primitive level and you can enlighten them to help against the Reapers.

I'm always intereted in anything mass effect, but how would any mod represent the pops for each race? I mean playing the asari is fun and all but when they use the blorg pop icons it kinda kills it.

  • Hyperlanes only to simulate the Mass Relays. Possibly seeded 3D models of relays?.
Assuming it's possible to mod multiple types of ftl onto ships you would actually be better off giving everyone warp and Hyperlanes. Most systems in mass effect don't have relays but they can use their regular ftl to get there though mass effect Ftl is pretty slow so colonisation tends to be focused in a small radius of systems nearest to the system with the relay.

They would be interesting ones. Done similar to the GoT mod for CK2 it could work..

The hope would be you could play any of the council races/major story races. I don't know how Quarians would work pre-Rannoch in ME3. Hopefully it would also be possible to start as a custom race and then enter into the galaxy and deal with the council.

I'm always intereted in anything mass effect, but how would any mod represent the pops for each race? I mean playing the asari is fun and all but when they use the blorg pop icons it kinda kills it.

As said by @Krajzen hopefully there are some talented artists out there who could come on board and get crafty.

We also just found out that the are Space Nomads in the game! So we get to have some possibility of a post Morning War Quarians.
The Geth should be a Fallen Empire (Not the Heretic Geth). It's just because they went full isolationist in ME Universe and nobody could dare to enter their space.
We also can try to play with the Ringworlds, making the Citadel.
And yea', Hyperlanes should simulate the Mass Relays pretty nicely.
Also .. The Turians, Asari and Salarians should have some kind of Federation. We should think this a bit.

And ... The System Alliance is not a that of a Xenophob .. if the space nazi Ashley and some other Humans were Xenophobs, it doesn't mean all of the Humans are like that.

And...the minor ones, the Raloi (they were uplifted but destroyed everything regarding space faring when they knew the Reapers were coming. They hoped they would be spared), Vorcha, Hanar, Elcor and Volus (Turian vassal) should also be there.

  • Geth fallen empire is a good idea, although that might limit their interactions in an ME3 reaper invasion scenario. Unless we use AI events to trigger them into action
  • Rignworlds and citadel is a good idea
  • Turians, Asari and Salarian Federation would just be "The Council" ?
  • Well, they're not completely xenophobes but they are also not xenophobes I feel, then again my interpretation could be wrong.

Well, if you're starting this I'd be happy to join the team. I have plenty of time to devote to the mod, and I'm pretty sure I can get a few more people involved if necessary.

That being said, we'd probably need custom traits (To represent biotics potential, among other things.) and governments. And figuring just how the heck earth is going to work with the SA given the fact that it's independent from it.

You are more than welcome. If you've any particular skills they are a plus, but if you just want to learn/be involved that's ok too!

Yea I agree, custom traits are a must. I feel custom governments are too. I know there are 2 dev diaries up about modding but to really find out I imagine we just wait for the release on Monday. Although going by how moddable the previous Paradox games are it's not a stretch to say that this will be no different, in fact it looks like the devs are putting a bigger onus on modding accessibility with Stellaris.
