Who would be interested in helping me put together a Marvel cinematic universe mod? The campaign would probably begin in 1933 or '36, and would take place in the same world depicted in the following Marvel films: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers. Obviously any upcoming films set in this same universe would also be used as reference material. I would be open to including some references to other Marvel films, such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: First Class. Also, some references to the comics would be permissible, such as the existence of countries like Wakanda and Latveria.

I figure this is a pretty good idea, since the Marvel films' WWII doesn't seem too dissimilar from the one in real history, and yet the addition of super soldiers, advanced Nazi technologies, etc. is really appealing.

The mod would involve:
  • New technologies
  • New research teams
  • New ministers and leaders
  • New nations (at the moment I'm thinking: Latveria, Wakanda, and eventually Hydra when the Red Skull turns his WMDs against the Reich)
  • New units (e.g. Captain America and the Howling Commandos would be a unique American unit created via event, while Germany and later Hydra would be able to build a whole bunch of special units with their advanced tech, although these units would all be quite expensive)
  • A lot of new events to help simulate the Marvel cinematic timeline
  • Unique graphics for new units and nations

I'm steadily teaching myself how to mod, but I don't think I can do this on my own. I'm starting with SKIF-style icons and then custom units. But I would really need some help with modding events and technologies, creating new nations, etc.

Anyone interested?

Edit: At the moment I'm working on SKIF-like icons for new units in this mod. I'll add them to the end of this post as I go along.

Sounds cool to me, thing is, how do you introduce these characters? Event? Time? Both? So Hulk can say only appear if you have a large enough reactor and in a certain time frame? Same with Captain America, would he only spawn should Germany lose? Or vice versa? Like a Superhero race?

Does the game start as vanilla, then explode into Marvel mode? How would they be implemented?

So many questions, and I bet there will be a lot of people here keen on this idea.

I just re-watched The Avengers on Blu-ray so I'm really pumped about them :eek:o

The game will start virtually in 'vanilla' mode, yes, and then become something much more due to the inclusion of new tech teams, new techs, special events, unique units, etc.

Some unique units would be activated via researching new technologies, but others (superheroes and supervillains for the most part) would be created via events or decisions. The events/decisions needed to create them would be unlocked when certain criteria are fulfilled. For instance, you will have to have researched the super soldier serum tech before you can create Captain America, and you will have to be at war with Germany, and Abraham Erskine will have to be working for the United States (i.e. you need to have him as a research team). Of course, once you activate Captain America's event, Erskine will die, and no more super soldiers will be possible.

I don't think Hulk or Iron Man could be included in this unless the game length can be extended right up to the modern era, but that would involve a lot more work than just a Marvel WWII & Cold War mod. Still, I suppose it's a possible long-term goal.

Hydra would start off as a number of radically advanced German tech teams, and many of their activities would be represented by event. So, once Germany conquers Norway, Red Skull can go there and get the Tesseract, which will be represented by giving blueprints for a lot of advanced technologies, allowing the Nazis to get lasers, an inter-continental strategic bomber (the Valkyrie), and some weapons of mass destruction. Late in the war, Hydra will revolt from Germany and turn their nukes on everyone, unless they're quickly annexed before they can do any damage. That's where Captain America really needs to parachute into Bavaria and shut Red Skull down, quickly. If he doesn't, a whole new phase of WWII would get kick-started.

Hmm, why not use NWO as a base? That's a 'relatively' decent start time right? Also carries on into cold war time, I heard its including the Space Race mod too? That'll make things incredibly interesting.

That's a good idea, actually. Assuming Hydra manages to survive and defeat Nazi Germany, and then drive out the Allies, they would have to develop their own space program, which means I'd have to make them as much a potential space-faring nation as America, the USSR, etc. It would definitely be interesting. But of course, I'll have to ask for permission first.

As a possible event assuming Hydra wins WWII, I thought it would be interesting for an 'alien invasion' to unexpectedly occur. The premise would be that Odin detects Hydra's excessive misuse of the Tesseract and attempts to take it back by force. So you'd end up with a highly advanced Hydra empire battling against mighty Asgardian invaders during the late '50s and through on into the '60s. That'd be a little more interesting than a standard Cold War standoff, but it'd probably be an optional, decision-based event.

Hrm, my efforts at modding so far haven't been very well rewarded. I tried to create a custom unit (Captain America), but my game crashed. I tried to create a new nation (Latveria), but my game crashed. -_-

I think I will focus on the graphical and conceptual side of the mod. Maybe I'll have more success learning to write events, which seem simpler, so I could do those also. If anyone with more skill and experience with modding is interested, there are some specific tasks I could allocate in order to make this mod a reality:

Nation Creation - Latveria
  • Create the nation Latveria, with the following provinces: 283 (Bekescsaba, Hungary), 285 (the capital; Timisoara, Romania), 286 (Arad, Romania), 295 (Resita, Romania), and 336 (Petrovgrad, Yugoslavia)
  • Remove possession of the above provinces (and claims to them) from their respective default owners
  • Add some industrial capacity and infrastructure to the above provinces, especially the capital, Timisoara
  • For now, a shadow cabinet would suffice for ministers (to be replaced later)
  • The shield and flag for Latveria can be found here

Nation Creation - Wakanda
  • Create the nation Wakanda, with the following provinces: 824 (Asosa, Abyssinia), 829 (the capital; Jimma, Abyssinia), 830 (Arba Minch, Abyssinia), and 831 (Awasa, Abyssinia)
  • Remove possession of the above provinces (and claims to them) from Abyssinia
  • Add some industrial capacity and infrastructure to the above provinces, especially the capital, Jimma (Wakanda is also rich in metal and rare materials, so those have to be added to Wakandan provinces, as well)
  • Temporary shadow cabinet
  • As a temporary placeholder for the Wakandan shield and flag, just use any Pan-African flag from here
  • Wakanda is about as advanced as Western nations, so that should be reflected by their technology being up to the same standard as a Western nation

New Unit Creation - Captain America
  • Captain America is a unit who can only be created via event, and only by the USA - he can't be unlocked by research, and he can't be built at the production screen
  • He is a modified Paratrooper, with much greater speed, toughness, hard attack, soft attack, and morale
  • He should be significantly better than even 1960s divisions, with an incredibly high defensive value (due to his vibranium shield)
  • Obviously he shouldn't require any manpower, should reinforce very quickly, and at very low cost
  • I already have a SKIF icon for him, which I can supply to anyone who makes this unit
  • I can also supply his custom counter for the counter strip

So, those are the immediate tasks at hand. If no one is interested in lending a hand, then I don't think this mod will be continued... at least not for a long time, when I hopefully, eventually get a grip on modding.
