Yes expert AI. No I dont think so, but as in any mod, I cant be 100% sure.

You dont. You send your 18w at the start and build them up to 40w through all the army xp you get from fighting and LL.

Yea Guderian is not good since he starts with 2 earned traits (the other 2 are personality traits which do not count/matter when talking xp gain)

Not sure what you mean by grey or blue traits. EDIT: ah I think I understand now. Blue are just those you picked and grey are those unlocked but you havent picked. They dont matter, not in this sense. What matter is the difference between gainable vs assignable trait. The wiki details which ones are which. IIRC, gainable traits affect further xp gain, while assignable ones dont.

You use the 5 army xp from Rhineland to spam 100 2w infantry, and when you have more than 120 divisions (excluding volunteers already sent) you can send 7 to nat spain, which is the most you can as it is further restricted by the amount of land they control

thanks - this way I got more XP on traits in 2 weeks than in complete SCW event before!

but I think it's really terrible that this is the only way to get any traits at all!

Last point is a bit to gamey for me - but at least you won't stop learning new things... ;)

I would like to reiterate that, so far, no one has actually done the math to show the actual difference in lost IC in choosing Export Focus/Free Trade first versus second versus third.
Again, not a choice of whether to take second silent workhorse versus changing economic laws at all, but rather delaying the latter one or two spots.
It is also unclear just how many more civs one gains by delaying four year plan to fourth to do the army innovations, tank treaty built, even though that is an exploit. Nor has it been shown how many research days are sacrificed by tech rushing int his way.
If you want me to do that for you (since you can't do it yourself somehow), I will. But you have to let me know you're going to be looking for it, I'm not going to do it and just have you ignore it.

I agree. I wish that there was a mod where most or even all of the admirals and generals started at a lower level than where they are currently in the game so that you'd get more of the satisfaction of building them up. I play with a mod that increases general XP gain (rather than doing the type of gamey grinding that the previous poster described), but it's still quite a bit slower than I wish it was. There is another mod that attempts to make the starting positions more realistic, but it also has the leaders at advanced levels.
I use the same mod. It is still really hard Tom get a level fourngenreal to five.

the easiest (for PDX) would be, that preset traits doesn't give that 20% malus - this way great leaders would stay great!

...make great leaders great again!

About Free Trade as Germany: I feel if Germany has the Autarky spirit, they should be limited to Limited Exports and Closed Economy. Autarky was about being self sufficient, and don't put ressource on the marktet you need yourself, so you need to import ressorces from other people again.
Although there should also be a seperate faction market, and/or trade agreement market where ressourecs go first, but this is another topic.

I don't disagree about the Autarky spirit and trade laws in the general historical. You want the benefits? Then you need to implement autarky as an economic policy.

But as you rightfully point out, there are plenty of situations where Germany sitting at Closed or Limited will starve the Axis for resources they otherwise need. (And actually hurt Germany economically since there are countries willing to buy those German resources.)

I want to point out, though, that I think German moves towards autarky in the 1930s were stupid policy anyway. I know why the game gives Germany a bonus for embracing that policy in the form of the national spirit, but the great irony of post-WW2 Germany is that it shows just how wrong the national socialists were in terms of trade policy. But in the game, autarky has real long term economic benefits.

Even when quoted, the message will still be collapsed. It's probably not worth your time.
I reserve the feature for people who incessantly use text formatting or just ramble a lot.

It wasn't just Germany that had some wrong-headed ideas on trade in the 1930s. In fact, protectionist trade policies (tariffs, retaliatory tariffs, etc) contributed to the duration of the Great Depression (along with the gold standard, some missteps with respect to reserve requirements, and a few other monetary policy mistakes).

Ben Bernanke (former US Federal Reserve chair) wrote a great book on the trade and monetary policy issues ("Essay on the Great Depression"). For the failures of the gold standard and how it contributed to causing/prolonging the Great Depression, Barry Eichengreen's "Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1919-1939" is excellent. I think that both are accessible to non-economic historians.

So finally kicked of Fall Weiss. Around October 20, made lots of moves with poltiical power prior to and right after Danzig, including:

- manpower laws
- war economy to total mobilization
- improve worker conditions to raise stability

I have about 220-240 poltical power, and anticipate needing to designate fighter and naval designers. Seems to me even if two step only yields 170-180 poltical power NET, every bit of that is needed.

You get ~20% reduced xp for each learnable trait you earned, so it is very inefficient if you finish off grinding a trait before moving to the next one
Are you sure the 20% figure is correct? The wiki says the change is reciprocal, though it doesn't list a source for the info.

Commander Trait wiki page:
These traits can be earned by generals collecting relevant experience. Some of them do not work when the general is used as a field marshal after promoting them. For every trait a general has already acquired, the gain rate for all other traits gets reduced. Half speed with one finished trait, one-third speed with two traits, and so on.

Commander Trait wiki page:
I am not sure, I read it somewhere its around 20-30 but cant remember the figure, so I just said 20. When sometimes I accidentally grind a trait early and still try to get other traits, it never felt too difficult so I thought to myself 20ish is a figure I can believe without doing much testing.

Of course, you should trust the wiki more than my instinct.

Of course, you should trust the wiki more than my instinct.
The wiki has some pretty out dated or erroneous information on it in certain places. Like the Tactics list not linking tactical withdrawal to its doctrine research in SF. The engineering research page still references -x% research time reductions, rather than +% speeds.

Commander Trait wiki page:

wiki says 1/2 for second and 1/3 for third and so on...

As I couldn't avoid getting the tank-trait, there is still a very good progression as long as you restart battles all 24/48 hours and stay away from AI battles to do this effectivly.

But getting a 3-direction attack is almost impossible that way, as AI is in a permanent battle in all possible provinces.

EDIT:

I also use the battleplanner, as I hope my FM will get "Logistic Wizard" at some (very) later point this way.

Try to extend SCW by setting my TACs to Strat-bombing INFRA - does that help?

With 1 trait you get 3-4 XP every 24 hours - seems to "half".

...would you take the 39 industry techs (production, industry, construction) immediately in 02/37 or wait for a blueprint in 06/37 and take a ~4month "filler"-tech first?

If you just would take 1 or 2, please argue which and why.

From which date on you can steal 41 industry-techs?

The wiki says the change is reciprocal, though it doesn't list a source for the info.
The source is the game executable (CUnitLeader::GainXPForTraits). All completed traits of types basic_trait (the default) and basic_terrain_trait are counted and the XP for all traits gets modified by 1/(1+count).

But it is also easily testable in-game:
  • start as Italy
  • disable ai
  • group all units in Eritrea under Italo Balbo (no earnable starting traits, level 1)
  • attack into the middle Ethiopian province exactly until he gains level 2 (300 XP)
  • at this point, his trait progress looks like this: balbo_vanilla.png (300XP/1000XP = 30%, 500XP/300XP = 60%, bugged weather causes commando gains, 300XP/700XP = 42%). Consistent with 1 trait XP per skill XP.
  • doing the same again but giving Balbo an unrelated trait right at the start (gain_xp panzer_leader): balbo_1trait.png

I am not 100% sure if I get you rigth, which country?

DR (germany)

got all three 1937-industry techs (production, industry, construction) in 02/37
will get my 1st industry blueprint in 06/37
have 2x 100% for the 1939-industry techs from 4YP

...what's best for industry-rush?

wait for 1 (or even 2) blueprints or take one, two or three directly?

when will 1941-industry techs be available for stealing?

I still don't get it, but I do not see a reason to wait if you have blueprints available. Use them, afaik if your researching 39 and you steal a blueprint from Buthan it can be used on the 41 tech as soon as your research is done, but I am not 100% about it atm and can't test this. Maybe someone else has a better understanding.

Right now it's 02/37 and I will get an industry-blueprint in 06/37.

Better to take a 120-day filler-tech and wait for the 1939-blueprint in 06/37 or take the the 1939 industry tech directly in 02/37 ?
