Marrying Matilda = Gamebreaker ?

The two times I have done that marriage it didn't work out as well as I would have liked.

Playing as Sicily I set up the marriage and I thought I was just way too smart, as I would control the majority of the peninsula... At first it was pretty cool and she helped me take Tunis (step one in any Sicilian conqueror's play book), but than as so many people above me said she decided hey I am going to go rebel against he HRE, and I was like sure I will help you. At first we were actually kicking ass, we got all the way up to Lombardy, and than through the mountains came the first of several 10k doomstacks. Blew my whole army, plus a bunch of cash of mercs and lost.

The second time around I was the Duke of Providence (ruler designer), she quickly helped me dispatch Genoa, but once again rebelled against the HRE. This time I didn't bother to even try to help her (nor did she request it). She did have a few powerful Dukes with her though and I managed to pull off an assassination of the Kaiser, however she still lost and was imprisoned (where she died), and our only child died before her so NOTHING for me.

The best way to fix this issue would be to have her married to Godfrey of Lorraine in 1066. They had already been engaged for some time, and they married in 1068/9. He died before her, and I believe she inherited some of his lands.

Them being married is historically accurate anyway, so it makes sense to just have them as married in 1066 and forego a couple years' accuracy rather than her marry one of those Czech guys 90% of the time. She clearly ought to marry matrilineally, but this almost never happens.

Yes, why doesn't she? Every other woman with lands I encounter absolutely refuses to marry patrilineally...

Dunno about having her start married, but betrothed to Godfrey 4, her stepbrother & heir to Lorraine, as per her stepfather G3's plan to do exactly what we players want to do, take her land via marriage. AI doesn't like to break betrohals with powerful dukes, so it might play out semi-historically and reduce the odds of her marrying a random.

If you are a duke she will marry you patrilineally. I've done this recently: I played as duke of Austria and married my heir to her.

Well, you should be able to play the game the way you want. I normally start as a count or small duke, because starting as a king or emperor takes half of the fun right out of the game (in my opinion at least). So I never married her, since that would have made me too strong. In my last game (started as a self generated count of Atholl in Scotland) I was almost pissed, that the Duke of the Isles, that had joined Scotland, actually waged a war to install me as a king and succeeded. So after only like 20 years into the game, I was already king of Scotland.

I normally start as a count or small duke, because starting as a king or emperor takes half of the fun right out of the game (in my opinion at least). So I never married her, since that would have made me too strong. In my last game (started as a self generated count of Atholl in Scotland) I was almost pissed, that the Duke of the Isles, that had joined Scotland, actually waged a war to install me as a king and succeeded. So after only like 20 years into the game, I was already king of Scotland.

Then either don't use ruler designer or create a crappier character.

If you are a duke she will marry you patrilineally. I've done this recently: I played as duke of Austria and married my heir to her.

Well, I understand she does so, but I am curious why. She seems to be the only woman doing so.

I played with her once.

It was tedious because she got only girls.

I had to switch to elective succession because Gavelkind would have killed me. And in a form of bloodlusted revenge for every single one of us who married her to steal her lands, I married a lot of random guys and plotted to kill them right away to make money out of it. Was hilarious. Especially when I carefully choosed the future victim, I can tell you that being a ugly slothful dwarf muslim is not well appreciated in Tuscany...

But my best game to date was playing as her, rebelling against the HRE and then going for Italy and Sicily

PS. By 1150, I am now a Di Canossa ruler of Italy, Sicily, Sweden, and now Byzantium empire. Gotta post a pic of that

It seems a silly idea to try and conquer Italy if you've got to get your troops all the way from Rhode Island.

High five to my fellow Di Canossa Roman Emperor buddy! Almost the same titles as well, got Denmark instead of Sweden because I had Matilda marry Svend's bastard son and the Kaiser randomly decided to press my claim when I was playing as their son. I made sure to thank him by using my new Danish levies to win my independence war. I ended up giving Denmark to my cousin though because I didn't want them dragging my Italian vassals into an independence war.

I don't know about marrying her, but as the Duke of Provence, somehow I ended up as her heir and completely unwittingly gained all of her lands when someone-or-other's plot to kill her succeeded. Changed the game immensely, as I threw my ambitions on Forez and Savoy out the window and went for Italy instead. It was really surprising, and I'm pretty sure it's been added in a patch since I last played in Provence.

Interestingly, Paradox have decided to represent their separation (primarily due to being leading figures on opposite sides of the same conflict) as a divorce, when in fact I believe they were married until Godfrey's death.

Depends on the de facto territory the king/emperor holds. I started at the 1187 bookmark as Henry II, and still took a darn while to get Francia formed.

Yes, the game is much more fun if you ignore that it's easy to literally marry anyone and try to stick to people who your ruler would logically know about and be able to marry rather than marrying Matilda and then scouring the world from Iceland to Abyssinia to find an attractive genius for your heirs to marry.

I laugh when I read certain posts of players bragging about the gamey tactics they use to dominate the map. What exactly are they proud of?
