1) Is it possible to suggest/demand a particular marriage of a vassal or descendant?

I am sick and tired of building up a great house only to have my grandson married off to some (relative) commoner. As a king (or even a duke), I should have the right to influence diplomacy using those whose titles derive from mine, no?

This is what I envision: a) I pick a person and can arrange marriage for them if they are a direct vassal or descendant; b) a plot where I can pick the target in my realm and another target in the world and get 'em to marry; or c) a prestige/gold expenditure to trigger an event that suggests a marriage to someone in my realm of a person in their court and lends my prestige/alliance/opinion to the matter.

2) Are the values determining matrilineal marriage acceptance hard coded?

As many others have pointed out, it's silly that a princess can only be married to a mayor or courtier (I have gotten a mayor to work, once, with a special girl). As a dynasty blessed with a good number of daughters, I would like to ease up on the restrictions. After all, I will give her husband a fiefdom upon the birth of their first child.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Well, an interesting plot would be to break a betrothal or force a divorce on one grounds or another. You could set up an event to judge whether your grandson and his bride are 'equal' in terms of prestige, culture, religion, and what they would likely inherit. Things should have a fair chance of backfiring for you, I would think. It would require that something like "break_betrothal" is a function recognized by the game, as well as "head_of_dynasty". I think that it would be a cool thing to have, personally.

I can't really think of a good example of this happening, but there was a complicated system of the entire dynasty approving marriage partners. But it goes to marriage being too simple of a system in the game. Ambitious young men should be competing for the hands of desirable heiresses, and ambitious noblemen should be trying to push their daughters on their lieges' heirs. Being a king is a good thing, but being the grandfather or granduncle of a future king is not too bad, either. I don't have any code ready for you to use, but I think it is something worth pursuing.

I'd love to be able to suggest that two people in my realm but not directly in my court get married.

Or have something coded in that lets them meet when you hold a Feast or a Hunt.

It's sad and strange watching courtiers in vassal realms grow old and depressed because their marriage ambition is never fulfilled, despite spending 30 years in the same holding as someone of the appropriate age, sex, and rank who also has the marriage ambition.

There should be more regular festive events within the same realm. They were traditionally times to have betrothals worked out if not marriages.

Take a look at the Robin and Marian series of events under legendary events. Should be able to adapt that for a random unmarried courtier

I'll have to look at that when I get home. Thanks.

random_vassal and random_dynasty are both legitimate variables. I am still looking for a way to select a specific target.

Where are the marriage acceptance variables coded? I assume that they take into account either prestige or dynasty prestige, so I hope that there is a way to add the player's prestige into account in making the suggestion. Glad to see that some other people are interested in the same!

Thanks for the hint about Marion & Robin, as character flags seem a good way to go.

Bump.

To expand on this, I would love to see the following events in a mod.

I'm slowing learning how these work myself, but it's a rough process in some ways.

1) If there are two people in the same holding, off the opposite sex, who both have the marriage ambition, and maybe not a set of incompatible traits, they will ask their liege for permission to marry. I don't want courtiers marrying left and right before they even turn 20, so it should perhaps have an age kickin of 36 for men and 26 for women.

2) The ability for the player ruler to suggest a marriage between any two single characters within his/her realm, not just in his/her own court, and have them, or their own direct liege maybe, evaluate the match and agree or disagree.

3A) Lovers who are both single to request permission to marry.

3B) Rulers who take a lover, to sometimes marry that lover, if both are single, depending on the match (as some are plainly "sleeping with the help").

4) Lovers and affair events for female characters that aren't various forms of "sleeping with the king".

5A) Childhood sweethearts who aren't married by the time both reach 16 to seek to marry each other.

5B) A chance for childhood sweethearts to become covert lovers if stimied.

6) Covert relationships in general, such as lovers you don't automatically see on the tooltip, such as (see, this thread) two homosexuals in the same holding/court become "close friends", etc.

7) An added legendary event chain for a "Romeo and Juliet" romance that could end in one or both dead, seperation, marriage, war, etc, depending on the lieges' decisions.

8) The ability to actually send courtiers, etc, to the convent / cloister as an alternative to prison (semi-related).

Add 9) Feast, Fair, and Tournament sub-events that offer a chance for characters to meet and arrange betrothals.

Basically, I want the rest of the characters to have a bit more life to them and not so often feel like they're just sitting there waiting to be useful to the player-ruler.

I agree, there should be something like a head of a dynasty and house rules. A marriage with someone from a family of too low rank should require a judgment of the head of the dynasty or forfeit all or at least a part of your inheritance. Too low IMHO would be two tiers below your rank, however an emperor should be able to marry a member from a comital family (the lowest rank among the upper nobility), or just lowborn (their descendants might rise in rank though), which can be acceptable for baronial families. I wouldn't disable unequal or morganatic marriages, but these should be approved by the head of the dynasty, to keep your and your descendants spot in the line of succession.

This IMHO will make the marriage game even more interesting, maybe even challenging; however some might really like this, whereas others might really dislike extra rules.

It wouldn't be too hard to mod events in. I would give it a try when I finish what I am currently working on. In the end, having an event series that ends with declaring your dynast who marries unequally a bastard.

Plots might work, but it might be hard to code. It would be historical for two brothers to compete for the same heiress, and for a princess to have many suitors. I'm not sure if 'betrothal' is something that we can use in modding, and it would likely require that adult characters have betrothals for at least a little while before marrying.

But what would probably be doable in the short term is the event series comparing the ranks of your dynasts and their spouses.
