This happens because everytime you load a save you "awaken" the AI, ie it resets it priorities and usually sends out merchants...
Allthough 4-5 is a lot...

ah I see. Then I will never exit the game again :)

Another reason to care when to save and exit is the support limit for your troops. If you have lots of merchants in centers of trade where grain is traded, then your supportlimit will rise (see the maintenance screen for how much).

However if you save and exit, then this bonus to your support limit is 0 - the number will be corrected not before the 1st of the next month. I noticed that very grudgingly in one of my games where I had raised a large army (but not over my support limit!) and when I loaded the game on the next time I suddenly had to pay much more for being above the support limit...

I've noticed that the province distribution for CoTs is changed at every reload, and sometimes quite dramatically (I've seen drops from ~1100 to ~600 in trade value for a CoT).

Edit: Of course, this is due to the fact that province distribution isn't saved in the savefile.

That was really painful for me sometimes, playing Portugal which has an abysmal support limit and can only sustain troops with more merchants. It is always good to leave things cleared up before reloading because an awaken AI, even if still dumb, is stronger.
