It is very good to be your first narrative AAR. You should continue like this and all your AAR will become very nice stories and much more funny to read than many books I have read.

His last project

Overall it was an peacefull time and the Margravate prospered. Much of the taxes collected was saved until that day in February 1570 when Joachim ordered the foundation of a center of culture in Berlin. Joacim wasnt however able to watch his great project be finished as he died that winter in 1571. Johann George, Joachims son, inherited his father.

Johann George, 1571-1598

(Note: Faced with large debts accumulated during the reign of his father, he instituted a grain tax which drove part of the peasantry into dependence of the nobility. He permitted the admission of Calvinist refugees from the wars in the Spanish Netherlands and France.)

Widen the perspectives

“What this nation needs is some law and order” Johann George stated to his chamberlain. “Yes my lord, It would be a great first act as a Margrave to promote more law and order.” His chamberlain answered. Thus was chief of justices promoted in Magdeburg, Kustrin and Mecklenburg. In 1573 a rebellion occured in Lithuania. They hadent yet get used to be a part of Brandenburg, but Colonel Engel soon struck it down.

The rule of Johann George then continued peacefully without disturbing interruptions such as rebellions. Never the less, Johann George, strenghten his army. After all the infidel turks was right at the borders.

In 1576 a new idea took form in Johanns head. He had heard of riches that spaniards and portogueses have brought to Europe from the New world. Why shouldnt Brandenburg to do the same? The only problem was that Brandenburg lacked the maps and knowledge to start such adventures. England on the other hand did have the maps, surely they must have. So now a diplomatic campaign starts, where Johann George send the Royal court of England gifts, lovely poems and bribes. It slowly paid of and Brandenburg recived a new friend in this hostil world, but still England refused to change maps. It turned out that England did have maps, showing the New world, but as Brandenburg didnt have anything to offer the englishmen, they never enclosed their secrets. So if no one wanted to exchange maps, maybe it was possible to sieze them. Johann George direct funds to the shipyards of the Margravate to the purpose of building... warships.

In to the Tigers den

Johann slowly stenghten the Margravates navy and soon he commanded over 10 war ships and 7 transport ships. England was involved in a war with Denmark against Sweden and Russia so the time to strike should be optimal. In Marsch 1584 Johann declared war against England. The domestic reaction was a silent objection among the nobles. They had alot of money, prestige and social connections with England to loose, but their objections didnt matter to the Margrave. If England didnt want to share there knowledge, Johann was ready to rip it out of them.

The war was planned in detail. Just hours after the war decleration was made, the first army was landed outside London. The englishmen didnt seem to have any major armies at home, so they where unchallenged. Another army was able land, before the mighty enlish navy drove Brandenburgs navy away. Now, victory or defeat was to be determined by the two armies sieging London.

Dotts among dotts

A letter arrives in Potsdam.

“Margrave of Brandenburg,

Our forces has been victorius, London is now in our hands. The king of England did however send a smaller army against us, but they where no match for our brave soldiers. With this letter i also send all the maps we found in the English Royal Library.

Signed by

Colonel Muller”

After reading the letter, Johann took a look at the maps that was in it to. They astonished him. Never had he thought the world to be so big. His great Margravate was only a small dott among other dotts. The maps revealed a continent, called America, that was more then twice the size of Europe. The map revealed the almost endless coastline of Africa and maybe most important of all, the maps also showed the seaway to India. This would meen that a new age would begin in Brandenburg. A age of conquest in foreign continents.

Loosing London, the English King soon pledged for peace. Johann accepted it and begun to ship his trooppers home again. Every night and day Johann and the Council where occupied with studeing the maps and charters brought back from England. They had to determine how to procced with all this newlie found knowledge.

Sow you beat the English, but as I understood you was beaten by the Royal Navy. That is what has always saved England during big wars, but you fool it long enough to take London. Very smart:D

Yes I fooled them :) I send my navy outside Anglia just before I DoW them. Most of their armies was fighting in Denmark as England was allied to Sweden who had declared war upon Denmark recently.

I was able to send two armies to England before the English royal army caught me but that was enough :D

I realy didnt beat England I just "raided" them. If the war would have to continue I probably would have seen swedish and english troops in Brandenburg, sieging my own capital.

Brandenburgs first stepps

After the war with England, Johann thought it would be best to widen the alliance. Gifts was send to the Court in Hannover, thus enabled them to accept an invitation into the Alliance. In September 1585 the Alliances consisted by Brandenburg, Holland, Hannover and Thuringen.

After the Council finished studeing the maps conqured from England, 4 locations was thought as suitable for expansion. Table, Antsiran, Mahe and Roanoke. To the three first places traders was send to the last one a ship of colonists was prepared. All of the expeditions, except for the one to Table, where succesfull. As only Roanoke was inhabited by natives it was decided by the Council to expand and integrate that colony into the Margravate first.

Displeasure in the Council

“This is booth a waste of time and a waste of funds” It was the Treasurer who uttered his opinion. The other members of the Council nodded. “He is right, there are many other good uses for all the money we flush into that pittyful colony in Roanoke” It was the Chancellor who raised his voice. For three years now, the Margravate of Brandenburg had send colonists to Roanoke, hoping it would make the tobacco producing colony to flourish. It have all been in vain. The only good thing that had happened during these years, was when the governor reported that the first Brandenburg-American child was born. The one and only it seemed.

Johann was forced by the Council to abandon his plans for colonisation. The colony as the tradeposts would just be provided with the most important neccesitys in order to survive. Other then that nothing more should be invested into them. Instead, Brandenburg was to turn its eyes to Europe and all the possesions that rightfully should be apart of it.

A single blow

Hessen, a Dutchy inhabited by booth catholics and protestants, owning two provinces. One of the provinces, Munster, was a part of Johanns heir on his grandmothers side. The Duke of Hessen had for a long time now, denied any claims by Johann, but soon the time would come when he no longer would be able to deny Johann anything.

The war decleration was delivered in January 1589. Calling it a war wouldnt be right. It was more like a devestating, chrushing blow against the Duke of Hessen. All the members in the alliance came to the aid of Brandenburg, making the forces of Hessen totaly outnumbered. In July Munster falled in the hands of Brandenburgs brave soldiers, in December Hessen. The Duke of Hessen had no choise then total surrender and thus was booth the provinces of Munster and Hessen annexed.

Besides of having greater territory and population, the annexation of Hessen led to greater tolerance against catholics. The province of Munster had a great majority of catholics and Johann, not interresting in any more convertions, decided to let them practise their beliefs.

You have stoped colonization, and began to focus on Europe, this is maybe the best to do since you are playing like a german nation and I guess that you don't get very many colonists each year. Still it is always a shame to have to give up a project that you are working on.:(
