After reading so many great AAR I just had to buy Hearts of Iron.

And here is the AAR of my very first game.

I choose Italy, because it looked very promising. I didn`t want to take any of the real major nations, so I might train and improve my skills and still had not to care about too much and concentrate on the main things.

Unfortunally I did not install Core (I will do at once after this game), so its the ,,vanilla" version with the newest patch.

I only have very limited time to play, so you will have to be patient with the updates. I will make only short messages for the ,,prewar" time, and go deeper in it as soon as the actions starts.

And here we go:

italien_3.gif

1936:

A quick war with ALbania to secure a least a bit oil was won without any resistance.

1.jpg

In Ethopia the brave italian troops came under attack of the forius warriors Haile Selassie, but after reinforcements were brought to Mogadishu. Field Marshalls Umberto Pricipe di Piemont and Bastico could easly crush any resistance. The rest of the war became a huntig for the remaining troops.

2.jpg

Beside the military successes 1936 brought the begin of a buildup programm for the italian industry wich should last until 1939.
The new constructed ships (2 Battleships, Cruisers and Destroyers) would be very helpful in the fight for the Med.

1937:

Ethopia finally annexed.

3.jpg

We began to a campaign to influence Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary and bring them deep into the facist lair. Germany concentrated on Yugoslavia.

Soon it became clear that Greece would need to be conquered to get us moreresources and to bring us a new success for the italian people.

Unfortunally the inital assualt on the Isle of Argostoli was repulsed by a single greek division, even against constant shore bombardments and quadruple superority of the italian troops.

After canceling this operation, the italian troops could finaly seize an greek province:

4.jpg

But the greek troops proved to be more than a match for the italian troops.

Any assualt on Ionnàia from Albania was unsuccessful (in fact my troops from Vlore never attacked Ionnàia at all, they just marched, marched, marched but never reached it or even made process. Even Planes could not pass the Ionnàian Mountains).

Soon it became clear that the greek military had the better equipement and moral than the mighty italian army. The lack of supply and oil had to be compensated with italian blood and constant defeats in the air above Greece.
Every not otherwise required division landed on the shores of Agrinion.

The only successes were the mercyless hunt on the the greek transports, soon over hundert were sunk.

The furious Duce soon replaced Field Marschall ,,Stupido" Balbo. With Umberto Principe di Piemont, wich should bring the first successes.

First thing was to stopp the numerous different assaults on greek postions all over the front and to through all might against a single province.

After defeats under Balbo, despite sextuple superority, in Ionnàia, Larrìsa, and Athìnai, Larrìsa could now be taken with minor losses. The single greek air wing was heavly decimated. But the result of the italianbombardment of greek troops was still very limited due to the mountainous terrain.

Thessaloniki was seized without a struggle and Ionnàia was cut of. Athìnai was now defended by 10 Divisions and could repel any italian assualt.

The italian troops had to rest to compensate their losses and rallied at Agrionon. Only two brave Alpini Divions under Mj.General Franzosi defended Larrìssa. The Greek thougt this to be a failure and tried to win Larrìsa back. Under attack of 7 greek divions, Franzosi could delay the greek as long as possible before he retreated. Meanwhile Field Marshall Umberto Principe di Piemont order the instant assualt on Athìnai, and the remaining three greek divisions were soon overwhelmed, cutting the 7 Divisons in Larrìssa off from any supply.

After the winter in 1938 any resistance in Larrìssa was eliminated, leaving only the isles to be taken.

But the war has exausted the italian oil resoureces fast, and the italian economy colapsed leaving it at only 27 IC.

Ouch, 1938 and your economy already collapsed? that's not good, great AAR, normally I would have made things a little slower :p instead of attacking everyone before 1940
Those Greeks are diffiicult if you don't have a big technological advantage (impossible with Italy lol) and good air support, their mountains are a big pain in the ass.

Indeed. I had to find out, that the greek troops are not only supperior in their stats. But also had the hills and mountains on their side. Add to this that they seem to have only generals with defensive doctrine and have a minister with the same, it cost me many brave men.

My troops often fought with the 20% Out of supply malus, I guess I had not enoug transports on the convoy to bring in supplies, although the units never lost org and showed to be in supply, so I though it would be enough.

So the Alpinis often had to save the day. My tac. Bomber seem to have only very litte influence on the greek troops.

The next update will be on monday.

Until June 1938 and after the annexion of Greece, Italy could begin to sell their steel for large quantities of oil, rubber and coal and could bring the italian economy back on the tracks.

Germany still tried to influence Yugoslavia, but France did the same with better results. But Germany was able Austria anzuschließen.

The italian diplomats focused on the northern flank and could influence Switzerland. Spain was also influenced and brought back in the top corner.

6.JPG

Until Sept. 1938 Italy could save over 2000t of oil, 500t of rubber and could quit selling steel, instead coal could be sold at 1:1 base for oil and rubber.

Time had come to begin building more inf. divisions.

We could succesfully influence Portugal.

1939 our coal and steel reserves reached th 10k line again, oil and rubber stayed at their low numbers.

1939 brought first the lost of the Sudenteland for the Czeks, then the whole country was annexed.

Meanwhile the CCCP began a war with Finland, but the Fins would not be easy to overcome:

7.jpg

The italian Scientists could boost the soft attack from 5 to 8 and the ground defence from 10 to 16. Meanwhile we could finally develop a new fighter: The CR 25.

In September Poland was easly defeated by the German Reich, the CCCP seized two valtic nations.

8.jpg

November 1939 Germany invited Italy to join the German, Slovakian, Hungarian, Bulgarian axis.

It was a hard decision, but Italy agreed. The War versus the allies and for domination in the Med had begun.

In the first days two major sea battles took place.

Our first fleet engaded a british fleet at rhodos, it contained transporters and few cruisers. Soon the british gained reinfircement, many capital ships including a carrier wich launched an air attack with torpedoplanes on our fleet. Due to the stacking penalty of 75% to our fleet the italians had to withdraw. Our second main fleet was attacked by a british fleet at the coast of lybia. The Org of our fast deployed fleet was very low, and so it had to withdraw too.

We could bring naval bombers and a fighter sqaudron to the doekades and launch an air assualt against the allied fleet ourself, beeing intercepted by the torpedoplanes our planes could shoot down 23% of all enemy craft loosing only 4 of 300 planes of our own. Unfortunally our planes had to withdrawn, due to the lack of fuel. Even worse the Dodekades were isolated by the allied fleet.

In an attempt to bring more naval bombers from lybia to greece, british figthers intercepted them over the open sea. Italian Cr 25 and CR 35 rushed to relief the bombers. Although their org was low, they could defeat the british air wing. Planes were made to begin air raids against air field in egypt.

Our Alpini Divisons got order to seiz the undefended Grenoble.

Here the situation:

Here the military summary:

10.JPG

I thought I had transporters in Obbia, but I only have destroyers and submarines there, so my plan to bring my 4 CavD from Ethopia to Arabia, to puppet something there.

Now these soon disorganised Divisions (all Militia is in ethopia too) will have to fight against the british, wich allready began their assualt.

30. November 1939:

We lost our first 2 transports to the brits on the way to bring the despratly needed supplies to Crete. In return we sink 4 french transports.

Over Genoa our single CR 25 squadron intercepts 4 candian air wings! Unfortuanlly, their comdr. has skill 3 and is a sup. tactican. More unfortunally is, that they fight at max org 22 and our fighters still at max org 10! I am glad to set Mj. General Visonti in command (skill 3, sup tactican). In the first hour 20 planes are shoot down, only 9 enemy planes are shoot down in return.

At the coast of Lybia two of our cruisers and a destr. flotilla are under attack by superior british forces (6 cruisers and 2 dest. flotillas). After three hours we order an retreat.

I had done a large post for the following events, but as I clicked on ,,Submit Reply" the forum was down, and my writing was lost. As I did not wanted to write it again at once and I did not have time to play or write, the time passes. Now I can not remeber what I wrote, but I think it was nothing really important. At least a pictures was still on my webspace:

The major sea battles in the Med

And here comes the new stuff. I think you will only miss the end of November and the first major battles or better defeats of the Regina Marina.
logo.jpg

7. December: We contiune to sink french transports and even escorts in the Thr. Sea.

Two major sea battles around Greece continue, the situation is not favourable for the Regina Mare, we already lost some capital ships. Air raids try to support, other fleets rush to reinforce the overwhelmed Italian ships.

De Zara and his submarines still engades a british transporter fleet near Sicily.

At least we are able to shoot down many UK-Torpedobombers over the sea battle around Rhodos, despite the fact that our fighters and naval bomber lack fuel.

After heavy losses I order the retreat of the the fleets. Our losses were heavy, but ate least we could sank some british capital ships. The battle for the Med seems to be lost. Since the hostilities began, we lost 2 Battleships, more than half of all our cruisers (18), and the half of all our destroyers (14). The Royal Navy lost 2 Battleships, 9 cruisers, 8 destroyer flotillas, a carrier and 2 transport flottlias in return. Our plan to engade small UK fleets failed, as we only encountered large enemy groups. We must now focus on naval bombers, as our air base situation in the med is much better than that of the UK, although our plan to capture Crete and Malta also failed.

In the last hour of the day, Bardiyan is lost to british troops. It was strategical worthless, but a we lost prestige. How will we explain this at home?

13.jpg

The movie Maléna was created to deviate from the loos af Bardiyan to british troops.

To the next days we fought several battles in the skies, shooting down several UK-Planes. Our planes on the Dodekanios are still unable to escape, because they are always intercepted and have to flee, due to the lack of fuel. But the intercepting UK-Planes are already down to only 14 planes. The fights over Lybia are also successful, but no breakthrough could be achieved. We could also shoot down several Royal Airforce dive-bombers above Zürich.

Balilla.jpg

The sentiment in Italy is very good, the will to achive the vicotory is strong.

On December the 10th our first Alpini began the fight for Grenoble. Fighters cover the skies and our tac. Bomber had bombed the defenders although we lost many aircrafts.

As small fleet defeated us in the Thyr. Sea. forcing us to withdraw.

The germans took Arlon.

December the 12th: Finally the Brisitsh send a fleet to help their transports, until now helpless prey to our submarines. The Germans share their first tech with us: Moto. HQs

At the 18th December we took Gabes. We also finally destroyed two squadrons of Royal Navy Torpedobombers. Slovakia gave us Blitz Bombing Doctrine. The Germans took Bruxells.

At the next day it becomes clear that we can not achieve a victory against the French in Europe. We must wait until the Germans are finished with them and try to secure Tunesia meanwhile.

lago%20d'arno%20vittime%20della%20slavina%20a%20caserma%20campelio.jpg

The fightings in the Alps were fierce and cost the lives of many Alpini and french soldiers.

After Christmas the UK Forces could bring in over 600 aircrafts to wipe out one fighter and shoot down many naval bombers in the Thyr. Sea. The even attacked Genoa and inflicted heavy causaulties to our defending fighters. Our fleet breakout attempt from Rhodos was interceted and aborted. Al Jagbub was recaptured after a fierce fight with british troops.

Ita-L3-Prototype.jpg

The L3/33 saw their first action after the Invasion of Greece in the recapture of AL Jagbub. It proved to be very useful against massed Infantry, lacking proper AT-Equipment.

Fightings for Tunis continue. The numbers are even but I hope the Italian army will show its teeth.

The Germans take Lille, Sedan and Antwerpen. The Sowjets begin their assault on the last independend Baltic region: Kaunas. The Fins still hold a large potion of Russian ground, to boost their chances against the communists we gave them Moto. HQs. We also gave Man. Artil. Doctrine to Hungary.

1940:

The year starts with a small success: Our Naval Bombers could sink a transport flotilla among a huge fleet in the Tyr. Sea on the next day. UK forces get ashore! Roma is under attack!

The fightings for Tunis turn a little bit to our favour.

12.jpg

Situation around the western Med.

The assault on Rome is forced back into the sea a day later. Another outbreak attempt from Rhodos failed. Later on the day, two new british div. go ashore near Rome. A few hours later another allied divison is landing near Napoli. Italian troops await them there, to bad our coastal defenses wich were orderd to build there in December 39 are not finished.

British forces begin an assault on Bir El Hakim, 6 enemy divisons against our two infantry Divisons, our mobile forces from Al Jagbuhb move to react.

Finland exchanging territory with the Soviet Union.

As the end of January came, the hard fight came to an unfrotunate end for France. Italy had conquered Tuniesia, their rightful belonging.
The French troops retreated to Batna, wich was in fact the seat of the french goverment as long as Paris was threatend by the german troops.
A Italian Corpo soon seized Bône, before the whole 2nd Army (Tunesia), rested and awatied reinforments for the final attack on Batna.

February brought still heavy fights for Grenoble. The italian Alpini inflicting huge losses to the french defenders.

14.jpg

Fight for Grenoble.

Meanwhile the 2nd Army (Tunesia) had complety gathered and order to attack Batna and continue to secure the whole algerian Coast after that (the end of Operation Scipio senior – the African campaign against france).

15.jpg

Assualt on Batna.

With the end of the month the french resistance was broken, bespite it was reinfored by three divisions from Lyon. Grenoble was italian! Now Lyon, Marseilles and Toloun would be follow soon.

March brought two unpleasant surprises for Italy:
-France surrenderd to ther german Invaders and formed Vichy-France. The italian Plans for North africa and east france became void. The huge french resources stocked in Batna, are lost for Italy. Italian high command is planning the invasion of Vichy-France for late 1944, after the Axis has defeated the Comintern.
-While shuffeling troops Sardinia was occuied with only a garrison of 500 italian Fanteria. The allied intellegence got that information, and allied troops launched a seaborne invasion, sweeping away the small garrison with ease. Italian troops were send to react at once.

18.jpg

Precipitous Re-invasion of Sardina.

It took the whole italian 2nd Army (6 Divisions) to break the NZ-Defenders and reclaim Sardina. Meanwhile australian units seized the Dodekanes, wich were only lightly defended and the italian troops were almost out of supply due to the allied blockade. Only the garrisson of Leros (750 man) were able to inflict heavy causalities defending the town of Quaranta. Only the coastal support from the british cruiser HMS Hood could break the resistance.

More fortunate was, that all Italian Marine Bombers were ready for duty in the Aegaen. They soon began attack runs on the UK-Fleet around Rhodos. They inflicted heavy damage to the allied ships before their withdraw, but at a high price. Later a small australian fleet was spotted near the coast of Chalkidiki, the bombers started at once infliting heavy damage, before the weather turned into heavy rain and storm. The Bombers had to return and leaving the allied fleet only tattered, again.

With no enemies left to fight, germany moved all troops east and sending Italy the ,,Deutsches Afrika Armeekorps" (DAAK) to fight for Italy in Africa. The 12 Divisions (2nd Army plus 11. Korps under Heinrici) under Feldmarschall von Rundsted would prove very useful against the british forces in Lybia and Egypt, even if they would not make it from East Poland to Lybia before the begin of the operation. The Italian Army command gathered all available troops to Lybia, for the Operation Octavian - The campaign to seize controll of Egypt and the Suezchannel. The plan was to crush the british resitance quick and to secure Egypt and the Suezchannel. After that the Italian troops would subdivided into three sections.

Main force of the DAAK.

One Section would be return with the DAAK to Europe to fight the Soviet Union (Operation Pompeius). One Section would return continue to fight south until reaching the Horn of Africa (final stage of Operation Octavian), while the last section would secure the allied part of Arabia (Operation Trajan).

The Italian High command was afraid that the germans would launch operation Barbarossa, before Operation Ocatvian would be ready for the final stage, so Italian troops could participate. But it seemed desireable to begin the fight against the Comintern as long Finland still holds Russian territory.
