Chapter Twenty Five - First steps

It is November of 1234 and Vienna is experiencing yet another opulent feast, thrown by the extravagant Kaiser. The lost war is long since forgotten, together with the infamous return of the humiliated remnants of the Reichsarmee.

This time we are celebrating the big news - Siegmund is going to re-marry! Not really soon as his future bride is still a mere child but even the betrothal is an important event because union of such important royal houses as Ynglings and von Babenbergers surely are does not happen every day.

But that was not yet all. Siegmund invited not only the lords of the realm but other important European rulers as well. And three days into the festivities he betrothed both his daughters to two Kings - young Arnaud of France to secure some help against Lotharingia in the future and Carlo d' Hauteville, in line with the long von Babenberger tradition to marry into this Sicilian ruling house.

(OK, the event says something different but...who cares?)

With the feast in full swing, no one really noticed a small group of travelers which found an accommodation in one of the city's inn. An old knight, his servant and a noble lady, all looking like someone you won't remember the minute after you saw them.

Because often you identify the true creators of history only when it is too late.

------------------------------------------

The feast is concluded by a small fencing competition. All spectators expected it would develop as it always does - Marshal Johann and Duke Dietrich would fight for the trophy with one of them being eventually proclaimed the best fighter of the realm. Till the next tournament, that is.

But today the events have gone out of the track pretty quickly. Johann von Hagenow was beaten in the first round by a stranger looking old enough to be his father (interesting, since Johann is not a youngster anymore) and in the finals even the sword-master Dietrich lost three points to two against the foreigner.

After the duel, the Kaiser invites the man to talk with him.

"Who are you, stranger?"

"You can call me Nimrod."

"Hm. And what are you doing here?"

"I am a wandering knight. And I have travelled a long way to serve you."

"Serve me? Why?"

"Because you are the Holy Roman Emperor, destined to glory. I have been watching you since you took the crown and all you've managed to do since is to plot the control of Croatia away from your cousin."

"What?! I could have you executed for such daring words!"

"And I know you won't do that. You want to know more. Because you feel it as well. That this is not the Empire. You need to show the world you still have the power. Otherwise they will simply come and take what they want, just like Rama."

"What do you suggest?"

"We will attack Lotharingia and convince the Chatenois to bow before the Imperial throne! And to show you that I really mean it, that I really stand on your side, I'll lead your forces in the conflict."

The strange man finishes his speech, looking with his burning stare at Siegmund, knowing that he can't refuse...

------------------------------------------

When Johann von Hagenow is informed about the plan, his reaction is more than predictable.

"This is madness! We cannot match the Lotharingian armies and their allies in the field, especially after the defeats in Croatia! We ought to wait till France can join our side...and who the hell is that man?"

"That is Nimrod, the Supreme Field Commander of the campaign."

The Marshal is left speechless. The Kaiser made an absolutely unknown man one of the most prominent leaders of the realm? Why? Especially when this 'Nimrod' is looking as he is. He reminds Johann of someone. Of a long-lost memory.

This won't end well.

------------------------------------------

The plan was easy. A small force would besiege Nancy while the rest of the Reichsarmee unite in Swabia and lure the Lotharingians to a devastating battle.

It started well as in November the Chatenois army, slightly bigger than the Reichsarmee took a lone Imperial fortress near Thüringen and began moving south.

(notice the impending doom in the north)

The armies finally clashed in December near Württemberg, with the best Holy Roman leaders in command.

The main Lotharingian charge was directed to the centre. Nimrod, knowing that, pulled back with the Chatenois column following him.

Meanwhile Duke Ehrenfried shattered the Lotharingian left flank and started encircling the centre, exhausted from crossing the Neckar river. From then the Lotharingians had no chance for victory.

The Battle of Heilbronn was a devastating success for the Reichsarmee. It was believed to be the turning point of the conflict. Even von Hagenow started to think of a possible victory...

The main Imperial army was swiftly ordered to march to help the stack at Nancy as the scattered Lotharingians managed to form a formidable army there and attack the isolated Holy Roman unit.

They arrived just in time to turn the Battle of Sarrebourg into yet another victory of the Reich. Could this be the new dawn? Some are already looking east, to see the new sun, the Siegmund's Sun rising...

...only to see the horizont covered by the combined army of Brandenburg and the remnants of the forces of the Kingdom.

------------------------------------------

Two days later a group of negotiators arrives from the enemy encampment. They are going to speak only with the leader, wishing to talk about peace.

"May the Devil curse them!" As they are approaching, one of the members of the Nimrod's suite mutters a curse. The Commander hears it. He looks into the face of the leading Chatenois envoy and inaudibly whispers his own adage.

"Speak of the Devil..."

The negotiating goes swift. Lotharingians offer a white peace in trade of the safe passage of the Reichsarmee to the Imperial lands. Nimrod refuses that and both armies prepare to meet the next morning.

The Imperials are outnumbered 13:10 though fortified behind the Saar river in Sarrebourg. A situation like this already happened.

And it ended the same way.

And yet again, even though while winning the war, a sole lost battle turned it into a debacle.

But Nimrod is not angry nor desperate. It is hard to win when all the trumpf cards are held by enemies.

But this is just a beginning. And when it ends, you all will be surprised.

Did that last battle give 17 warscore? Damn. Things were going so well.

I'm not entirely trusting of Nimrod – I mean, he could, according to the iPad's dictionary, be either a skilled hunter or an inept person. Fingers crossed ;)

Huh, I didn't know "nimrod" could mean "skilled hunter". Would make sense, considering the biblical Nimrod, the great-grandchild of Noah and the grandchild of Ham, was a "mighty hunter in the eyes of the Lord", which according to Genesis 10 was the source of the common phrase that someone is "as Nimrod a mighty etc.". There is also a quite impressive list of his conquests in that chapter, including Babylon. How could this be put to use in the AAR, I wonder? Hmmmm....

How old are the various child brides by the way?

At first - folks, sorry for the long hiatus but I've been on a vacation without i-net connection and when I returned...well, it is summer :). I will try to put sth up tonight.

Did that last battle give 17 warscore? Damn. Things were going so well.

Well, battles in CK2+ are much more decisive.

Let's see what kind of nimrod this Nimrod is ;).

Huh, I didn't know "nimrod" could mean "skilled hunter". Well, taking into account he defeated both champions in the tournament, he totally is as Nimrod a mighty.

About 6 and 4 I believe.

The cliffhangers are always so ominous...

;)

Chapter Twenty Six - Acceleration

Another 'Aww!' yelled in a high children voice, followed by yet another whizz of something that is apparently a whip held in very skilled hands is heard from behind the closed chamber door. Johann unwittingly closes his eyes and bites his lower lip.

Even though he has been soldier throughout his entire adult life, the picture of one of Siegmund's sons being hit by their father himself is too heavy even for the Marshal.

'Maybe I am getting too old for this.' thinks von Hagenow. 'After all, I have been serving the Kaiser and his father before him for...how long it has been already? Oh...twenty five years. How eventful these years have been - I saw this castle burn to ground, be taken by usurpers and eventually returned to its true owners. Who knows? Maybe I will see Siegmund re-establish his rule in Germany? The recent events indicate that...'

"Aww!"

'After all, even though the war with Lotharingia ended inconclusively, the diplomats sent to the minor German countries achieved exactly the thing Siegmund hoped them to - the landlords realized that in the conflict for the Imperial hegemony it is better to choose side peacefully...then be forced to do so.'

Johann Reinmar is of course happy that the Empire is growing stronger...but on the other hand, it would be better if it was not all credited to that strange Nimrod. The Kaiser has started to believe him even more and made him his secretary. All that in less than three years. Pff.

The chamber door opens and a small boy - Prince Magnus, actually - goes out. His eyes are full of tears and every his move seems to be terribly painful. Before Johann could do anything, he hears Siegmund from inside: "Johann, excellent! Come in."

The Marshal would want talk with the Kaiser about little Magnus and Siegmund's...upbringing methods but he decides against it. Siegmund von Babenberg called him from his family estates in Bohemia and insisted on his immediate arrival so the matter has to be of great urgency.

"My lord, I have received your letter and arrived as soon as possible."

"Wonderful, Johann - I know I can rely on you. Well, you have to ask why you are here. You already know that some Dukes of the realm reacknowledged me as their rightful ruler. What you do not know is that thanks to Nimrod's envoys the Hochmeister of the Teutonic Order himself bowed before me."

"And, as I promised, I managed to have you nominated the next Hochmeister! With your heirs receiving the title as a hereditary fief! Isn't that great?"

Johann von Hagenow stands speechless for a second but then he responds: "Oh, thank you, Sire! What an honor for me and my House!"

"It is a small reward for what you have done in your service to the Empire. But it is not all beautiful. We are still far away from achieving our goals."

"As the future Grand Master you have to protect the interests of the Order *and* the Empire in the north. The Danish raiders are causing a great harm to the Imperial trade and their recent seizure of the city of Bremen was the last drop. This war will see me reassured in the position of the protector of the realm - so do not fail me, Johann."

"I won't, Sire!"

-----------------------------------------

The first battle of the war is not actually fought in the north. Because the Danish King allied himself to the Free Duke of Croatia, General Dietrich was charged with handling the southern theatre.

Denmark shows great war readiness when they swiftly gather their host and seize the castle of Oldenburg while the Reichsarmee is still being assembled.

Meanwhile Dietrich of Carinthia is attacked in the south and even though Duke of Slavonia rushes to help him...

...he is defeated on December, 25th...

...with the remnants of his levy routed in January near Cakovec. So much for the southern theatre, then.

-----------------------------------------

The Reichsarmee finally reaches Oldenburg in March and attacks the Danish army there, led by their King himself.

Thanks to the experience of the Imperial commanders, the battle becomes a stunning victory for the Empire. Johann turns his army to chase those who remained...

-----------------------------------------

They met at Stade. The Danes were exhausted, surprised with the ferocity the Germans fought with Teutonic knights leading the charge.

Johann himself fights together with his guard dismounted. He learned to fight this way and has prefered it since he was a young man. is was quickly making his way towards the middle of the Danish force where the King is present.

And there he is! On a small hill, protected by a minor Slavic mercenary suite. When Rolf sees the German troops cutting through his guard, he quickly tries to jump on his horse and wants to flee. But Johann has just finished off the Polish captain and is almost there, only two steps away from the King...

Swoosh! Von Hagenow suddenly feels something hit his neck. He touches it and finds an arrow, being swiftly covered with blood. Johann tries to swing his sword and hit Rolf but instead he fails to the ground with life rapidly pouring away from him...

-----------------------------------------

His body was brought back to the camp and even though the doctors tried their best to save him, it was too late.

Five days later, Nimrod is named the Imperial Marshal.

Wonder where that arrow came from... An enemy archer left behind the rapidly advancing Germans? Or maybe someone saw the battlefield as the perfect place to get rid of a nuissance inconspicuously. Who knows, perhaps a certain vampire guided that arrow to remove one of the few moderating and stabilising influences on the emperor.

Alas, poor Johann. Ruhe in Freiden. Hochmeister is not a bad bit of recompense, though.

Nimrod certainly seems well-equipped to play the political games of intrigue present in the Empire. I wonder if this won't be th last death we see from which he profits...

Nice job snagging the Teutonic Knights, too bad for poor Johann though.

Yeah, Johann will be missed...

Who knows, perhaps a certain vampire guided that arrow to remove one of the few moderating and stabilising influences on the emperor.

I guess we will never find out...but the question is: What are Nimrod's goals?

Alas, poor Johann. Ruhe in Freiden. Hochmeister is not a bad bit of recompense, though.

Nimrod certainly seems well-equipped to play the political games of intrigue present in the Empire. I wonder if this won't be th last death we see from which he profits...

Snatching the Order is always nice. Sadly, I do not have many options to employ them.

Chapter Twenty Seven - No mercy for the betrayers

After the battle of Stade, the war is quickly taken to an end. The desperate second Danish attack is fended off at Jever and few days later the peace is finally signed.

The first Imperial victory since Siegmund usurped the Holy Roman crown.

------------------------------------

"My lord, may I present you the new Feldkommandant of the Reichsarmee?"

Siegmund has just returned from Venice. The merchant families there are again causing trouble, demanding more rights and freedoms inside the Empire. Those little bastards. Bringing up the fact they were the ones who offered shelter to the exile Kaiser many years ago in order to blackmail him today. But they should have chosen better timing - the Empire is stronger than ever before and with the Baltic and North Sea trade routes finally open, Venetian merchant marine is no longer vital to the Crown. Important, yes, but not vital.

"My lord?"

"Oh yes, bring him in. And Wolfram?"

"Yes?"

"Remind me to take care of the Venetian issue later. The Contarini & Dandolo alliance is a power to be counted with and we will probably be forced to solve this...situation once and for all."

"As you wish, my lord."

Wolfram von Eschenbach, the Imperial porter, walks away from the room and in a minute he returns together with a young, bearded man, looking like one of the Slavic savages from the east.

"Sire, this is Thomas von Habsburg, one of the members of the Habsburg ducal family. He has been strongly recommended by Marshal Nimrod for this position."

Thomas rushes before the Kaiser and kneels.

"My Kaiser! It will be an honor to serve you."

"Yes, yes..." Siegmund impatiently orders Thomas to stand up.

"Habsburgs, Habsburgs...mmm...where exactly in Germany does your House rule?"

Wolfram makes two steps towards the Kaiser and before Thomas can say anything, he answers: "Sire, von Habsburgs are one of those dynasties who were given lands in Poland and Lithuania. But due to the, erm, split of the Imperial authority, they are technically vassals of the Kingdom of Burgundy."

Siegmund von Babenberg frowns. "So...he is a Burgundian?"

Thomas, visibly nervous, again falls to his knees. "No, my lord, my loyalty belongs only to the Empire and Your Imperial Majesty! I have no ties to the Burgundian Crown whatsoever..."

Wolfram once again intervenes and whispers into the Kaiser's left ear: "Sire, this Thomas is actually an exiled bastard of a minor member of the family."

Siegmund shakes his head. So a bastard from Burgundy. What exactly is Nimrod up to?

------------------------------------

A middle-aged man in a red cloak is sitting in the Grand Hall of the Göttingen castle at the table with the King of Lotharingia himself together with some of his advisors. He has just taken the floor: "...and the moment you attack, we will be able to declare the Imperial rule null and void. With our help and the momentum gained by surprise, there is no chance you could fail."

Ludolf Chatenois stands up and looks at the envoy. "And what are our guarantees? It is very risky for the Kingdom to be seen as an aggressor. We cannot afford to err."

The stranger smiles. "Guarantees? There are none, my lord. You must attack the Empire."

"Must? You think you can command a King? Are you insane?"

(the conquest of Bremen actually did play a role in this since it put me over 50% control of de jure Germany)

"Insane? Not all. I only know the facts. That Siegmund von Babenberg defeated Denmark - which, as you know, Your Majesty, is something the Chatenois have not been able since the civil war. That he declared himself the holy guardian of the German lands. And that he used the support of his rule to crown himself the Hereditary King of the Germans just two days ago. And I know how scared you now have to be. Because no longer you can accuse the von Babenberg Kaiser that he actually has no power over your lands as he has not been crowned by the Pope. Well, it seems that he does not have to be. And you should be grateful that we offer you an alliance."

The entire Lotharingian council looks like they would kill the cloaked man the moment Ludolf would say so. But the stranger is simply sitting in his chair, playing with his golden ring and waiting for an answer. Because there is only one possible ending to this negotiation.

Ludolf the Just sighs and says: "I agree. Tell your father that we will fulfill our part of the deal."

The stranger smiles once more. "Wonderful! I am so glad that this meeting has been so fruitful, Your Majesty!"

"Me too...Signore Dandolo."

------------------------------------

In October Magnus finally matures. No matter how promising he looked, he has turned out to be a wastrel and sluggard, much like his grandfather (and father before his mysterious change as well) was. But Siegmund does not really care for his succession - his time is now and what comes after his death? Why should he give a damn? He will be dead and all these stupidies with passing the heritage on - nonsense.

After the grand hunt followed by a feast thrown in Magnus's name, he rushes to his personal chambers where he has an appointment with the Marshal. Nimrod has been recently doing a lot of strange preparations, sending and receiving letters, meeting with envoys and, most importantly, sending Thomas von Habsburg to deal with miscellaneous 'matters of the realm'. And Siegmund has to find what's behind it. He is the Kaiser, after all.

Nimrod's response is fairly straight: "My lord, as you remember, four Kingdoms split from the realm of the House of Austria during the Rebellion. Burgundy, Lotharingia, Poland and, technically, Croatia. You succeeded in retaking Croatia but that has been all. Yes, we warred with Lotharingia but even if the war was successful, the Empire would gain only a single county. We could battle like this for eternity and ultimately achieve nothing. The Empire needs to use more drastic measures to achieve its goals."

"And so I have got in touch with the pro-Imperialist nobles inside the Kingdom of Burgundy thanks to our new Feldkommandant. Their leader, Prince Rudolf, is ready to support our, erm, your rule if the Reichsarmee pushes his claim to the Burgundian throne. I have done all of this as solely my initiative but I believe that you will approve of my plans. After all, it is for good of the realm."

The Kaiser cannot actually find anything wrong in what Nimrod has said. He gives his secretary the consent to continue his actions...but somehow is left with an odd feeling that this is not the way it should be. That something is drifting away from him...

------------------------------------

On the first day of the year 1241, the war is declared and the Reichsarmee prepares to cross the Alps into the Burgundian realm.

And as always, the fate thinks otherwise.

"...and as such, the Imperial hold on the territories of the Most Serene Republic of Venice is unjust and La Serenissima should be restored as a neutral place for the trade and negotiation. Signed, Ludolf the Just of the House Chatenois, King of Lotharingia"

The Lotharingian messenger finishes reading the letter and bows. He would very much want to flee immediately because the stories of what has happened inside the Viennese walls to those who bring bad news are...not nice.

Siegmund von Babenberg looks straight into the envoy's eyes and silently answers: "The Empire will not fold to these outrageous demands."

The Lotharingian gulps. "In that case, Your Imperial Majesty, it means war."

"Yes, it really does. Tell that to your lord. Tell him that we are not afraid."

The messenger bows once more and swiftly leaves.

Wolfram von Eschenbach turns to the Kaiser. "My lord, you understand who is behind this?"

"Yes, Wolfram, I do."

"And do you know what does war with the forces of Lotharingia combined with the power of the Venetian oligarchs mean?"

Siegmund faintly smiles. "It means that the shadow games are over. And even though we will try to end the war through the less conventional ways..."

"...we will eventually have to face them in the open. And I believe that that is the place where we are the best."

"Because there are moments when your enemies simply cross the line."

It seems that the Hapsburg Lip is developing nicely ;) I did enjoy the "what exactly do you rule?" line. It's not every day you get to see a Hapsburg asked such.

Very interesting developments on the diplomatic front. I assume you now have to fight a two-fronted war? Ouch...

Looking forward to ipseeing how you cope.

Well, it is actually one-front war, except the front starts in the Alps and ends in Silesia :p.
