First of all I would want to point out that
Maramaros, or Maramures, was mainly inhabited by Romanians in Middle ages. And their influenced and habitation spread into Bereg and Ung counties, having petty voivodships and forming some sort of marks at the border of Hungary. Voivodship of Maramures was the most important one, ruled by Houses of Cuhea, Bedeu and Câmpulung.
Is a well known information, since the people who founded Principality of Moldova were from Maramures.
2. Also, the Eastern Carpathians, beside the border of Maramures with Pocutia and Vrancea with Covasna are passable.
There were numerous Tartar raids up to XVIII century. Even the founding of Moldova is an argument against making Carpathians an impenetrable barrier.
The impassable lands will look more like this in middle ages.
In contrast, the Făgăras Alpine region is passable in the game.
As for the first point of this topic
Example, this is a map of the holdings of the Romanian house of Dolha-Crăciun from Bereg, Ung and Maramures.
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_de_Dolha_y_de_Petrova
And that was the third house as importance.
Then we have house of Micula who gave the latter lords of Moldova and Maramures
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogdan_I_of_Moldavia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Bogdan-Mușat
House of Dragoş, a very important house for Transylvania, Moldova and Maramures
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragoș,_Voivode_of_Moldavia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Dragoș
So for Romanian history the province is as important as Moldova and Wallachia.
And only from XVI century Romanian population start to erode north of Tisa(the part now in Ukraine).
This also might help.

As a good point, I will remark the in game border of the province, the region is a bit bigger but it makes justice for the political situations since Romanians had influence west of Maramures too.
