Maps I've always failed to find are those representing modern tribal boundaries... am particularly interested in North America and Africa, does anyone have any idea where I could find a few?

Thanks much... but trust me, I've scoured that "Windows on Native Lands" site over and over as well as all their linked sites without finding anything satisfying...

I must say I'm being quite picky here, but I'm really searching for a map of the entire continent with the *modern* location of tribes... that California map is very nice and I thank you for it... now if you had the other 58 continental states and provinces... :D

Seriously though; the language map is also great, again, thanks for your time.

Note that the spelling in the maps above are sort of semi-standardised. I have been looking at the data and sometimes the tribes are in fact sub-tribes, or population groups... But it is the best map I could find. I have found some maps of the Ivory Coast in French, but these are relatively easy to find if you know what you are looking for.

Yes, well I figured there weren't any roaming tribes of Frenchmen in Senegal, but it's very good nonetheless. Population groups are even better in fact: I simply want to try my hand at redrawing the borders of Africa.

Wow, thanks a lot. I haven't looked at them all yet, but it's certainly a wealth of information... as for what I plan to do: ideally the entire continent, but I certainly will move methodically... and slowly. I just tackled the Senegambia area yesterday and I must say this: Africa is a mess

The rest of the map seems even more confused, too. Do tell me one thing if you can though: ethnologue.com tells me Peul/Fulbe is merely a dialect of Tukulor, is this right? Would it be correct to include Tukulor and Fulbe in one nation, and if so, how far does the similarity go? For example, does it extend to the Fouta Djallon Fulbe in Guinea?

Ethnologue is based on language data, which can be confusing. Xhosa are for instance a Nguni sub-group, but speak a Khoisan based language:
Tukulor seem to be a Fulbe group, but to put them as one country wouldn't work since they essentially stretch from Senegal and Guinea to northern Cameroon. http://www.wagateway.org/people.htm
Other good sites for ethographic data are the frequently rather scary US missionary sites.

Aha, right, I see. The way I had put it, what that website calls the Western Fulani were regrouped in one country. I must say I've certainly got a lot of reading up to do before proceeding... at any rate, thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
