I wonder, should the province system be abandoned and replaced with tiles or whatever?
I am personally thinking of an ancient PC wargame, Command HQ. It was rather simplistic, but managed to represent quite well several issues. The map consisted of field, a pixel a field, and an army occupied one field, but it actually measured 3x3 fields, so armies could overlap. When hostile armies overlapped, it meant battle. When friendly armies overlapped, it didn't have any speical effects, but hostile armies run the risk of running into two enemy armies. There were also cities, generically occupieing 3x3 fields, though that should of course be changed.
Such a system might have some interesting consequences:
- for example I'd say if a unit would move on the field (not just overlapping) currently occupied by a retreating enemy, then this should be regarded that the retreating forces were overrung and annihalated by the advancing enemy. Currently, it is rather unlikely to do this, you'd have to attack immediately the province the enemy's units are retreating to, win, and be there before the retreating unit is.
- of course the question is how territory is taken, having to move around your divisions just to snatch land woiuldn't do. I would say that you automatically occupy any territory between two divisions IF THERE IS NO ENEMY DIVISION BETWEEN IT and of course within an approbiate distance (about 100 kilometres max?). Also, the area a divison drives over would also autmoatically be taken. The only problem could be that if you advance a divison too far, it would get cut off, but seriously, if you leave nothing to guard the flanks then this is bound to happen.
- no more calculating which province borders to most enemy for best attack, or to most occupied for best place for garrissons, the former you'd simply cocnentrate on a narrow front for breakign through or a broad attack for pushing back, and garrissons would simply radiate their anti-partisan influence.
- no more discussing what type a province ought to be, you would have different areas like in reality, and all cities would get their urban area.
- Subs could simply get a larger control area, to symbolize the area they can cover to look for convoys. Of course, this ought to delude their combat power.
So, what do you people think?
