so i was looking at some screenshots and it got me wondering, when i see the minimap, can the entire map be used to have cities grow, or are there only key locations where cities can grow and can only sprawl so far out?

in one video they were showing what looked like an area about the size of the new simcity city tile size with a city growing on it, and when you look at how little space it too up compared to the entire mini map it make it appears that cities can be absolutely massive if they are able to grow on the entire map. can they?

The entire map is your oyster. The question I have is that they say the maps are 4x bigger than CiM1. Do they mean 4x larger than the XL maps like Tokyo?

Tokyo map was 2x2 km in size (2048 m to be precise), or 4 sq. km. According to devs, the largest ones they had were "spanning over" 3x3 km, so let's say they were 10 sq. km.

In the new game, maps will be 8x8 km, or 64 sq. km, so they will be 6 to 16 times bigger than original, depending on what the maximum size was.

In dev diary #7, Fiirdraak made a contradictory statement:
Actually the maps are roughly 4 times bigger than the maps in CiM1 which means that the maps in CiM1 were about 3x3km (XL map) while in CiM2 they are 8x8km.
If the measurements are right, then this would be a little over seven times bigger, and not only four times (9 km^2 : 64 km^2). But I guess the "four times bigger" is right, as the comparison screenshot in dev diary #3 shows a roughly four times bigger new map.
