I do think maps need to be bigger...when it counts...what if HBS decided to resize maps according to the kind of mission being run? and difficulty level?
for example I find it pretty annoying to encounter the edge of the map in the middle of a battle or assassination mission. Though hitting the edge only happens mid-late game (4-5 skull missions), when the opfor offers a better challenge , and I find myself rethinking my original strategy and trying to improvise while my lance is scattered and running for their lives, withdrawing from the mission is never an option for me.

I'm also thinking ambush and escort missions would benefit with long (rectangular) maps, not saying smaller maps. the objective revolves around destroying or escorting moving targets with a fixed route, all the action takes place along this route. For purposes of securing the route or setting the ambush point (whatever the case) one rarely hit the edges in this kind of missions. But the problem is that it has become rather predictable, In a escort mission, one can take a look at the map right at he beginning, find gigantic landing pad, and that's it , you can figure where the enemy ambushers(?) will pop up, I'm thinking that by making the maps longer, more ambushing point options could be available for the opfor to use, thus breaking with the monotony a bit.

(Never mind the infamous moon map during an ambush mission, one's own lance seems to always shows up behind the target convoy. HBS please take a look at that.)

Now I should point out that for ambush mission the problem isn't just the map size, you see for these, you are the ambusher, you should be able to ...well... set up the ambush maybe? but the way it works right now, one is always late to the party, so to speak. So I can not tell if a bigger map would actually help here. At least a larger map would help me find a suitable spot to fix a killing zone maybe, without finding my lance running behind the enemy convoy.

"Attack" and "defend" base missions , seem fine for the most part, the focus is the base, or the attacking opfor, very rarely ever hit the edge of the map on these kind of missions.

again these are issues I only encounter while at late game, so I think they are worth at least considering.

you guy's opinions are welcome and/or in case Im missing something...which is very likely to be the case.

You are using mechs that are too slow for the ambush the convoy mission if you are finding yourself running behind that much. You might want to consider a LRM mech combo (2 mechs heavy LRMs) to much faster mechs with sensor lock so that you can hammer the convoy as they run for it.

Keep in mind that making the map longer means that the mission will take longer to complete. There's a reason they mark the objectives on the maps.

I think the chase is a deliberate mechanic to force more mobile mechs on the field, I don't have a problem with that at all and sometimes actual quite relish the challenge it presents as your often forced to expose yourself to fire to get the job done.
I wholeheartedly agree about the escort missions though, dropping a ship from orbit to escort a convoy from a building to a landing pad 500 metres away feels somewhat excessive! In reality it's basically just a defend the landing pad mission. A long skinny map with 2, 3 or even 4 seperate encounters would give a much better feeling of immersion.

Most of the maps have terrain well beyond the map borders...just need to roll some of the borders back.

The biggest offenders are the narrow ones that funnel you right at the opfor, typically used for the 'Go Kill The Enemy Lance' short missions.

Most maps are large enough to allow a frontal assault, which I rarely ever do, and left and right flank...one of these typically being the better approach.

Some of are just plain annoying, with a border cutting off usable high ground or a water source. These really need a fix.

Hey very good point guys! and have to agree. just wanted to bring it up in hope HBS meditate a little about this topic. It isn't a huge thing, but small steps can go a long way to make an already good game even better.
