I believe those symbols represent Russian home provinces, even though most of them aren't even controlled by Russia. ;)

Actually, they're home provinces when you play Russia. But when you play Poland, most of them are Polish home provinces i.e. with Polish emblems.

Interesting, so different nations can have overlapping claims on home provinces? I guess this pretty much guarantees that Russia and Poland will be in each others face most of the time. :)

Well, Poland and Russia definitely do and they're probably the example of this overlapping. Reasons for this are many. Needless to say, the Muscovites will be wanting to gather 'all the slavs' under its territories pretty soon. The Poles will be trying desperately to keep hold of those lands whilst battling the bloody Turks and anyone else that wants a piece..

Actually it was used long before that.
One theory is from the unification of Västra Götaland, Östra Götaland and Svealand.

And another theory, pointing at an even older origin, is that it is the symbol for the crowns of Tiundaland, Fjädrundaland and Attundaland, the ancient kingdoms that makes up modern day Uppland.

Fascinating. I didn't know that, although I suppose the symbol of three crowns is pretty universal. :)

Ok for the ones who has checked the map out, I found the part missing at Milano so caentral Europe are now complete. If you by any reason begins to study the city marks and so on you'll probably find them inconsistant (or how its spelled), but they have the correct positions.

Hi chaps, sorry to interrupt your Viking conversation, but from a Southern European perspective I found a strange name: 'Euskadia' (in North Spain).
this term was 'discovered' by Basque Nationalists by the end of the last century. in terms of sales in Spain, a lot of people would not be happy to see this highly-political name. historically the correct way will be to put 'Biscaya' or 'Biscaye' as the adjacent Bay.
for the rest it is a very impressive map. congratulations!! :)

Yes, I think every Spaniard who has posted on this forum has pointed out that mistake. Unfortunately, though, it's apparently very difficult for the designers to make changes to the map.

.

Alas, it's not the only mistake. The three province making up Bretagne have starnge names somehow. Armor means the land of the sea in opposition with Arvor the innerland, so nothing to do with onl this part of Brittany.
The name Bretagne is used to name Finistère (Land's End), that is using the French name for Brittanny for a small part of it...

I guess nothing is perfect, but that won't change much of the fun...

Well, done Gryphon! The map looks great.
