The job done with CoAs looks certainly impressive. And, of course, I believe that countless hours were put into research.
However, how long does it take you to research correct province names? Is there something preventing you from asking forum members for help? I'm sure you'd have answers in hours.
Let's take that 'polish names for lithuanian region' issue. Is it really 'nearly unresolvable' matter ?
Somehow I doubt that it will be possible to simply 'edit the names' on the map by ourselves.

Also, about using Polish names for Lithuanian provinces, I am not sure if it is really the case, but even if so, you have to remember that the game features only Christian nations and dynasties as playable, while everything else has a status akin to natives in EU (i.e. it is there for the taking ;)).

If you look at Middle East screenshots, you will also notice that the names used are "Christian" ones (e.g. Baghdad, Antioch, Damascus) rather than the Arabic ones, as the map will be viewed by players from the perspective of Christian nations - so imho it is reasonable to expect that the same approach will be used for Lithuania, which was pagan for most of the CK period, and thus its native names were not used by any Christian nation. :)

Well, Antioch was in a Christian nation at the beginning of the game - the Byzantine Empire - so I'd hope that it would have a Christian name.... ;)

Christian Names

I agree on the Christian names concept, but now it'll just end up being an "strong discussion" over Latin or Greek or heck...even Aramaic. Personally, I like the bitmap idea the best.

define "correct"

In almost all maps around here, there's german names for everything in present day Poland and eastward.

This comment comes a bit late, but first of all they should be geopraphicly correct. Like I already said during the Victoria beta, provinces sometimes had names of cities which did not even be in this province, but in a neighbour province. A good example for such a mistake in CK is the province of Köln (Cologne) in Germany. As I saw it on on screenshot of the CK beta it lies on the wrong side of the river Rhine. The original Köln province had been renamed to the name of a small city in the same region by the CK developer team. And second, as you already mentioned there is the question in which language the cities and provinces should be named. Personally I prefer the name of the cultural majority living in the specific region, but way it has been done until now was also ok.

I'm a beta, and I do have to say that the perspective of having Lithuanians pissed at me for such a reason doesn't make me feel too nervous. :p They should have had joined the Christian club earlier, just for the sake of having their named spelt correctly in CK. :D

So provinces simply have christian names? Wow. However question arises then: is polish language somehow more christian than lithuanian? Maybe then the rest of Europe (and beyond) should have polish names? At least we would have consistency in that case.
This is getting really bizarre.

Yeah that's the typical answer, that won't lead anywhere, but to unconsitency..
Half the provinces get their original names, given to them by their inhabitants and the other half gets stupid names given to them by their conquerers, just because most gamers do not even know how to pronounce Arabian or Lithuanian names :)

Sorry, but the game is called Crusader Kings for a reason. When I conquer some city in Holy Land, I'd rather be called Count of Antioch than Count of Antakiya (even if I get Arabs pissed off at me, which I would fear much more than having to deal with the pissed off Lithuanians :p). Same goes for Lithuanian and Prussian pagan names. The game is about Christian conquerors, so it is only fair that their name are used for non-Christian provinces.

And yes, you are quite correct. Most gamers do not know how to pronounce Arabian and Lithuanian names. Most gamers do not *care* what the Arabian and Lithuanian names even are. Most gamers want to see names they are familiar with.

Let me guess.. Are most gamers ignorant Americans

edit: But I must admit, that its a good argument that this game is about Christian conquerers and therefore the provinces they will conquer should have Christian names. Well I suppose my arguments fit better for the games Europa Universalis, Victoria and Hearts of Iron. They don't have a specific theme, except EU, but with all the mods, EU is not longer "restricted" to Europe.

As far as I can see most parts of "Lithuania" on the map on the screenshot have Latin rather than Polish names.

Poles converted to Christianity before the CK era. Hence, they have their names spelt right.
