Having tried my utmost to mod the E3 map, and having found it impossible; and with the available software being what 15 years old?...

When I looked at the HOI4 map modding video 6 months ago, it made no sense to me at all. But now that I've a smidgen of understanding of how maps work, from stuff I've done over the past 2 weeks, I looked again.

Jeez, it is so easy to do. So, I think I'm heading off on a HOI4 map modding adventure.

Of course now that I've sniffed around the HOI4 youtube videos and tried stuff out myself in a personal test Hoi4 mod, I'm now thinking that I could use the E3 map as it is in HOI4? Hoi4 has 13000+ provinces and that game engine still uses a single cpu, so go figure that out???

E3 struggles with 8021 provinces. I figure that they had to trim back on stuff like playing with aircraft in hoi4, so as to make the game even playable?

Using E3, I'd have to do loads of extra work on the other map bmps as well? An anyway I still need a single bmp of the E3 map provinces (all the coloured provinces) which I don't have. ...

Pondering, maybe it would be easier to just use the Hoi4 and revert back to culling provinces, but the major problem here is that the RGB colours are almost impossible to differentiate, as the values are only 1 RGB unit apart, and visually impossible to separate. I mean if you use the select by colour tool, you don't get to select one province, you get loads of other provinces as well.

i have no idea what the issue is or how to solve it...yet i going to stick my noise in it. HAVE you taken a look at IRON CROSS (yes the much forgotten expandsion) does it map. IRON CROSS seems to have a map with same number of provinces as THE E3 map. PLAYING it DOESNT SEEM TO CAUSE LAG. IF you have IRON CROSS you test it as a mod for DARKEST HOUR or...install it over HOI2/DOOMSDAY. AT the moment i playing IRON CROSS over HOI2/DOOMSDAY with no lag on a 6 year old single core laptop. NOT sure if this is a silly idea or not but for better or worse i posted it. KEEP up the good work guys!!!!1

If I were a nasty guy I would suggest you to draw a map from scratch as the WiF3 map prototype awaits for someone to draw it. I don't want to distract you from your own projects, though.

Unfortunately I am not an artist or have any artistic skills, only dogged determination mostly. So drawing a map would be beyond me totally.

The Victoria 2 map is ok,but should have a little bit changed to fit provinces borders into 20th century era.

AFAIK another modder on this forum used the iron cross map for his mod and the iron cross owner told him to stop using it. ??? If I remember it correctly? I DIDNT mean so much as us as study to find why this old map works with no lag while you are encountering issues with E3 map. THEY MIGHT have done something that was overlooked....the E3 MAP itself is much nicer than the iron cross map.

Nova, are you still interested in having a modified E3 Map? I just did a quick test run. The DH version runs relatively fast in the first year, I take it, it then slows down significantly? Maybe your Putin Mod starts out with too many units. That doesn't help either. Anyway the AoD version is painfully slow. So I either move my mod to Darkest Hour, which I am not so keen on or I undertake the arduous task of merging provinces big time. But I guess I will only do that if anyone else is interested.

Hello fabfeingold, timely post.
I've been messing about learning the Unity engine and watching youtube videos and trying to learn some C# etc etc.

Yes I am still interested as I think it would be a very worthwhile project. Too many provinces I think, plus too many modern day countries, plus probably too many units as you say.

I used to cut back on the amount of countries guys could play as for this reason in the mods I did.

Excellent. There might be one very easy alternative: I am still in possession of the E3 Map v0.5, which has exactly the same amount of provinces as DH or AoD. That would be a shame though. But it would save hundreds of hours of work. If you like I can upload it to my dropbox and you can take a look at it.

We did many hours work on improving the E3 map sea province names which were missing. But this may not be too much of a hindrance as possibly we can just add them to your version 5?

In theory the Mapmaker should allow you to add more provinces than 7999, however I always had crashes too when going beyond that limit. But if I were you I wouldn't add any more provinces anyway as the game cannot handle that many and slows down to a crawl. In fact I am in the process of culling the E3 Map of unnecessary provinces to actually make it playable.

How do I integrate this map with my own mod? I can figure out all the scenario editing later but what files do I need to move to get the basemap? Moving the map folder causes crashes on game load.

From the db folder you need country, misc and revolt
All the map files including, province, province_names, colorscales, distances.
All the scenario files.

That should do it.

Speaking from experience, when you want to start doing a new mod using mumia's E3 map, you start with the map and basic set up files posted in the link on page one. Nothing else. That is why those files were posted in the first place.

The scenario folder contains the set up for every country on the map. To change a country or create a new one, you must first remove the province IDs from one country and give to another. ALL the province IDs MUST be included for the map to work.

To repeat, you start with the map.

Otherwise? Well good luck with that !

No its no slowdown, but by engine limitation units try to build fronts. ai demands lots of units but is that wichh could slowdown the playthought.
Works great in ww1, but blitz dont work becose dont have a pathfinder based in terrain advantages and brakets operatios as in hoi iv. I made a ww1 mod from grad campaing, but going further it dont was working enought right to me.
