I couldn't find much. But you have disjointed lake provinces in there which might cause a problem (#181). That one broken province in the center of the map should be fixed, too but is most likely not the reason for your problems.
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I got rid of all the lakes, fixed the broken province, made sure every province was contiguous (got rid of all the islands and removed a few stray pixels here and there) and it still crashed on calculating paths, same as always.
Before I threw my laptop out the window I thought I'd mess around with some of the other map files on the remote chance that it was something there, so I made all the land in terrain.bmp a single color. Fired it up, sat back expecting another crash... and it loaded all the way to the select screen. :laugh:
Presumably my original 5-minutes-in-paint terrain hack job confused the engine somehow. I'll do some more testing to work out exactly what part of it the engine doesn't like and report back but at this point I'm just glad it works! I guess this is a lesson to always test every single step of the way.
