Glory to the Emperor, lord of Nippon and divine descendent of the sun.
Japan was once a land of warring daimyos, each competing for the title of Shogun, great general and civil administrator. The imperial court, while lavish and exquisite, never excercised much political power since the 12th century.
In the course of the Sengoku Jidai, when Spanish imperialists traded weaponry with the local daimyos, most noteably those of the island of Kyushu. These weapons, in the hands of hundreds of levied peasents, proved victorious for the perseverent Daimyo Tokugawa Ieyasu, who became Shogun and demanded isolation of Nippon.
The Spanish however, through help of the lords of Kyushu and technological superiority, warred with the new Shogun until he was forced the abdicate. The daimyo of the Shimazu clan, claiming descendence from the first Shogunate, was installed.
The new Shogun would focus surprisingly inward on rebuilding the civic infrastructure and insuring a secure line of sucession from him to his son.
The opportunity of expansion would come when the Chinese Republic declared war on the Korean state in the mid 18th century. Simazu Takeshi would soon after invade, recalling Oda Nobunaga's ambition had his death not cut him short. The invasion, although hastily calculated, would overpower the weaker Korean forces, yet a stalemate caused by brilliant Korean admirals and generals would restrict the conquered lands to Seoul and the southeast. These lands, known as Choson Sukoshi, would be heavily fortified by castles, some of which rival that of Osaka.
Colonization of Hokkaido has begun soon after the campaign in Korea. Here the colonists hope to spread Japanese culture throughout the rest of the island, currently occupied by the Ainu.
With the decline of Spanish power came a stagnation of western contact. The Japanese are still equipped with 17th century western techonology. Yet tomorrow is a new horizon, with new innovations and ideas. Would these confuse and disorient the Shogunate and throw the land into another civil war, and if so, will they recover and use Western culture to expand to lands never seen before, and then perhaps Japan would become a world power?
