Brief History:
During the colonization, many of the American colonists intermarried with the natives of Alaska. However, the Natives always saw themselves as the rightful rulers of Alaska, and they never came to fully appreciate being ruled by what they saw as a foreign power, the Federal Empire of America. During the recession of the 1930's, while the FEA was struggling to revamp its economy, Alaska's population, which the majority of saw themselves as Native Alaskan, formed the Republic of Alaska, declaring that the FEA no longer owned or controlled Alaska. A small revolutionary war ensued, and, despite the FEA's superior army, navy, and air force, guerrilla warfare won out in the end, leading to thousand of dead FEA troops. The FEA, while not recognizing the independence of Alaska, withdrew their troops in 1938.
When Kennedy took power in the FEA, he eventually recognized the Republic of Alaska as a sovereign state, in exchange for diplomatic agreements. For one, most of the oil deposits in Alaska were to be leased to FEA companies.
In the 1980's, Alaska saw a quiet coup d'etat, wherein several leaders and representatives were killed. A native man named Sivoy Qanni took power. The new government, while still going by the name of the Republic of Alaska, was really a dictatorship in disguise. The 'free' elections of the chief and the representatives were really rigged, ethnic minorities were oppressed, segregation was on the rise, and political critics were arrested, or assassinated. However, the FEA relied on Alaska for oil, so there was little objection from them at the swift change in policy in the Republic.
In the modern day, Alaska continues to be a dictatorship in disguise, with Sivoy, now in his 70's, continuing to rule. Despite the Official Language being Native, more Alaskans know English, and only 25% of residents of Tanax speak the Official Language.
